Nothing more to say than "OUTSTANDING"!!!!!! I have the 2hp HF dust collector and I've already built a VERY similar chip-separator.... I just need to combine it on your cart!

Good start to a great build. Just FWIW, I have the same DC and the same series filter but mine is the washable unit. Some more upgrades if you want even more air flow. #1. Upgrade the impeller. Rikon and Wen impellers reportedly fit and work great. I am planning on the Wen impeller ASAP. #2. Size up your inlet and pipe sizes through your Thien, OR size up your inlet and move the Thien to the separator ring although everything goes to the bag. Go with 6" inlet / pipe sizing

I am doing it a bit differently. The dust input hose goes directly into the center port of the blower as it was designed to do (I have turned the unit upside down from yours) and the output from the blower goes into the the thien collector and then the bag/filter unit. The benefit, IMO, is that all the suction (low pressure) is delivered directly to the collection hose rather than pulled through a large garbage can and then through the hose. That does not create the best suction where you want it. It follows two principals of minimizing the run distance of low pressure side of blower and the diameter/volume of that run. In your case the entire low pressure side of the blower includes the trash can and the hose. However, the footprint of my setup is larger.

Looks good. I poured a 4x4 slab outside my shop and am framing in a small room. Since it'll then vent outside like a dryer, I'll not need the filter and ought to have a great CFM flow rate. Wish me luck!

I actually added a Thien baffle inside cylinder between the two bags. I saw that in a KZbin video and thought I would give it a try. That has worked well in keeping a lot of the garbage out of the bag so it stays pretty clean. But my next upgrade was going to be what you did. Its a great idea. I saw a few others that did that and asked about the motor mounts because they worried me but the two I talked two have had theirs like that for several years. I am not convinced they will last so I might have some new mounts made for me. Great video. I am putting the link into my folder for HF modifications.

Thanks for the comment. Ya, I was a little conerned about the motor mount as well when I built it. I ended up adding a second 45 degree angle brace on the back to provide even more support. The 2x4 goes from the top of the motor mount to the base. I might weld up a steel stand for it but right now it seems pretty solid, so I'll take it. Let us know if you come up with a better design. I'd love to see it. Always looking for ways to improve the setup.

thesergeant I would probably go with the kind of brace you put in. Makes sense. I actually bought the Harbor Freight because of all the mods I found online for it. I have a Festool dust extractor that takes on a lot of my tools. The HF takes care of the bandsaw, lathe, planer, and my jobsite saw. And I like it being mobile because I have no issue with a long hose and connecting it to each tool. All my tools are mobile so I just move them into position and make sawdust. Then they go back to their storage position along the wall. I may put the HF in a closet in one corner with a furnace filter in the door at the top and bottom to see how it behaves. I like to experiment with dust collection. I am going to share your video on my Facebook page "Coogan's Workshop" because I know a lot of people were interested in things like that.

Thank you for your generous and considerate video lesson !!! :) :) :) Question: 1.) How snug is the plywood lid for your garbage can? Is it better to be more snug? (sealed?) 2.) When you mention the 2" drop for a 4" tube (hose?) are you talking about the depth the hose passes through the plywood lid? 3.) Is there a certain direction the elbow should be aimed so that the large particles actually do fall to the bottom through the 270° open slot? Gratefully, Steph
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steph, I didnt' seal the top and haven't noticed a reduction in suction but you could always get adhesive backed pipe insulation and put it around the bottom lip of the plywood where it contacts the trash can. Then use a bungee cord across the top and connected at the handles of the trashcan to pull it down tight. I may do this at some point but 2+ years later and it's still working well. The 2" drop refers to how far down the center port extends below the plywood top surface. Ideally you want 50% of the diameter of the hose to extended down into the can (the middle port). I directed the 90* elbow so that the material would make a smooth transition to the wall. Google "Thein baffle for further instructions. Goodluck!!

I like that setup, it looks like it should really perform well but at 7:14 - 7:20 or so in this video when you were cleaning up the lighter dust the tip of the tube caught the floor a little, but came right back up. This happened three times, so there has to be a bigger lose of suction than you are anticipating, and this is the point i want to make, when the tip caught the floor, it should have grabbed it with enough powet that you would have had to struggle to get it loose. I'm sure you kmow what saying, for instance when you use a house hold vac and it catches a curtain or flat patt of surface you have to separate the hose from thete. Like you said, the harbor freight system is only so effective, but i am thinking the seal on the tin barrel. There is a seal broken someplace, because it should suck much more than what is shown here. Plus you are getting too much dust in the clear bag in comparasan to other videos that use thr thein baffle. Build a real thein baffle instead of using that swirl design that sits inside the barrel and raise the system up 12" or whatever height you make the thein baffle. I say this because those sysyems swirl the dust around the barrel and suck it back up. Another thought is to build another thein baffle with a 2 1/4" diameter hose same as a shop vac to see if it performs better with the harbor frieght system. Something else just came to mind, and that's maybe that the tin barrel may have leaks in the seams itself. Clean the inside of the barrel with rubbing alcohol and seal around the bottom all the way around and up the side to the top with silicone.I'd like to know if you change anything or find any leaks, because i want to build one and i want it to perform properly instead of wasting my time. My two cents.

Hi, great job on the alteration. I am thinking that a 2” pipe that is in the center of the bottom Thien level plywood, and then extends just below the 4” pipe exit by 2”, would create a negative pressure in the bottom of the trash can and almost eliminate all dust going onto the filter and clear bag. Have you seen very much fine dust in your filter?

100% agree. I remember reading about someone that upgraded to a Clear Vue cyclone from a 1.5hp unit. They tested both dust collectors on their table saw and used a Dylos particle counter and tested the air quality. The air quality measurements were the same between the 1.5hp 1-stage and the 5hp 2-stage. WIthout proper hoods the DC can't do it's just. I need to update this video because after doing more research and years of using it I realized how low CFM this setup actually pulls. I think most people would be better off with the stock setup with a 1-micron bag filter.

Really well done video and job on the mounting cart. Now that you have had the unit up and running how often if ever are you cleaning the filter? I'm deciding which DC to purchase and the Jet has this handle for knocking the dust off the filter that looks attractive. I am going to build your cart with the 2nd stage separator so I'm not sure if I will even need that handle for cleaning? Jet is more $$ and only 1.5 HP so I'm leaning the HF direction. Would love to get your thoughts.

Very cool! Couple of questions: How necessary is the circular wood separation device that's suspended by the long bolts inside the trash can? (Not sure what one would call that.) What did you do to ensure a tight seal of the lid of the trash can? Also, you seemed to mention some formulas in the video. Where would I find those? Thanks so much for sharing your very nice project.
@thesergeant3524

The separator isn't mandatory but it's a super nice upgrade. It makes emptying much, much easier and faster (the bag is a nightmare), you can vacuum up things you otherwise wouldn't (like bolts, screws, etc.) without risk of damaging your impeller or puncturing your bag and your filter will stay cleaner longer since less dust is ultimately making it that far. The separator is called "Thein Baffle". If you google it you'll see a ton of info on how to make them as well as the formulas mentioned. I didn't seal the lid on the trash can. The weight of it plus the pressure exerted by the 5" hose is enough to keep it sealed against the lip of the can. You could always add gasketing material around the wood and then use a bungee cord across the top to hold it down if you are having leaking problems. If you don't want to go through the effort of building a Thein you could always purchase a "Super Dust Deputy" instead. Same principle. Goodluck and thanks for the comment!
@lawalkowski
@lawalkowski 7 жыл бұрын
You keep getting inquiries about sealing the lid of the trash can. Point out that it is in the suction side of the system. Never be a dust problem and wold only affect the suction at the end of the hose by whatever loss the lid may have. The suction would also help pull the lid down tighter to the can. If wanted, a gasket material could be glued to the outer portion on the inner side of the top of the lid. Compared to the overall air flow, any leakage would be minimal but, for a perfect system, go ahead and gasket.

Having looked at your system along with other similar setup modifications using the HF dust collector the question comes to mind, why the need for such a large fine dust bag since most of the debris ends up in the pre filter. Even with a large shop running multiple intakes, the amount of fine dust collected by comparison to larger particles caught by the prefilter is minimal. You'd have to empty the 31 gallon prefilter a 1000 times before coming close to filling the collection bag on the actual dust collector. I think further modifications and thought needs to be put into this. And in doing so, would make the required real estate of the overall system much smaller by comparison. I could be wrong, but your test collection suggests is be correct in my presumption.
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 7 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, no need to use the full size bag under the filter. A couple months after I made this video I shorted that bag to maybe 1/3 it's original length and use the space underneath for hose and accessory storage. I also added a clamp rack to the opposite side of the motor mount. It's worked phenomenally well over the past 3 years. I almost bought a new Laguna system but stopped myself when I realized I wouldn't be gaining much for the money. I'm starting to look at my shop tool setup and dust collection differently now though and am in the process of reworking my overall system so that I can get away without a full size dust collector.

thesergeant - thanks for the response and update. I stopped by HF today and took a closer look at the dust collector. I also saw they have a "portable" 1hp vacuum motor housing only for less than half the price of the one like yours. I don't know how much cfm difference there is between the two. The 1hp I believe was 600cfm of air flow but @ what force i don't know. In looking closer at the one like yours... personally, given your test results. I'd toss the after filter for the most part and/or convert it to a prefilter like your 31gal can. Use maybe a 5 gallon post filter set up similar in design to what exists. Given that train of thought... The 1hp without the bag and pleated filter looks inviting. Then you could just design it the way you want. Currently, i don't need that much collection. My 12 gallon shop vac suffices. But i do want to add a prefilter to it similar to yours. Looking over designs and mods to systems like the HF that you did and others for my shop vac is what brought me to your video. That and I'd like to have something powerful enough, say for a table saw, that can do the job. I'm not sure my Shop vac is up to the task. So looking at alternatives.. such as the bigger systems holds my interest. Have you done an update video on your collection system yet? If not, might be nice to make one and add in a section of thoughts or ideas you've had to improve or downsize, modify, discoveries in use of or what have you since you've been using it now for a few years now. You'd get a view from myself and I'm sure others wanting to see an update and hear your ideas or thoughts being tossed up as your shop has progressed... 😉 Cheers...

Thanks for detailing this setup, planning to go this route ... just wondering if there is a legitimate amount of suction loss at the rim of the chip separator can where the ply sits on top? Would this be ideally gasketed in some way or benefit from an air tight container with a lid that seals?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 9 жыл бұрын
***** The seal is pretty tight on mine although I did think about adding high density weather stripping foam (with adhesive backing) around the inside rim of the separator. Then running a bungee cord across the top from one handle to another to compress everything and really seal it up tight. I might still do that but the suction is pretty strong as is.

Hey Sergeant, nice work, very clean design and lots of bang for the dollar spent. My shop is down until I get a system in place because my wife has severe asthma and a lung condition, I was concerned about the HF 2 H unit but less so now. I have gotten conflicting stories on whether the motor is convertible to 240, less costly to run. Do you know if it is or not? Some on the Internet say no, but HF today said yes. Somebody is wrong... I appreciate any insight. Thanks for the design idea, I plan to use it!

Not exactly true Nick. Efficiency ratings for electric motors are higher when running at higher voltages (if the motor was designed to be run at that higher voltage), so it requires fewer watts to achieve the same output. Current would only be the same if efficiency was equal at both voltages.

I actually need to do an updated video. Since doing this video I've gone through 4 different systems, including a 3.5hp 14" impeller cyclone and back down to a modified Oneida Mini Gorilla. I can not longer recommend this type of system. The static pressure loss is too great. Yes, you can get decent separation with the Thein baffle but the SP loss is almost 50%. The problem is the filter requires that you have a pre separator. The HF unit with it's small 10" impeller isn't pulling enough CFM to give more to a pre-separator. Yes, the filtration is good, but if you're only collection 50% of the dust that you could be what does it matter if it filters .5 micron? I'm going to do an update video with everything I've learned. I have a air particle counter and have done a lot of real world testing.

Sergeant, Can you compare the effectiveness of your Thien Baffle with an Oneida Super Dust Depty? I have been looking for a comparisson of the Thien Baffle and Super Dust Deputy for a year or so to no avail. How much fine dust gets through your Thien Baffle and into the Wynn 35a. What size garbage can are you using. I hope to use a 30 Gallon bucket for the first stage dust collector as it requires about 8 inches less vertical height than a 55 gallon trash can.
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 7 жыл бұрын
That's a comparison I'd love to see (and do as well) but I can't justify the purchase of the SDD when the current system works so well. As for the fine dust, very very little gets through. The Thien does a phenomenal job at separation. I'm using a 30 gallon can and I've emptied it dozens of times and there is pretty much nothing in the collection bag below the filter. I've cleaned the filter twice and there was a decent amount of dust though. If you just blow it out with 60psi compressed air every few months you should be good.

Going to be doing a similar arrangement to this setup when you did this vid. Its very close to what I had in mind. Except I'm on the fence as to putting the Thein baffle in the ring of the Harbor Freight body as many have done and a small barrel underneath. Have the Wynn filter on the way. But the downside to that is all the debris goes through the fan motor. The plus side is there is no loss in cfm or performance the way I understand it. But leaning toward the separator before the fan motor. Any suggestions for me after using your for several years? Would be much appreciated.

I need to do an update video. When I made this video I was new to woodworking and didn't have a complete understanding of dust collection, CFM, static pressure loss, ducting, etc. Knowing what I know now I would not recommend this setup at all. The impeller fan on the HF unit is too small, the CFM drop from the Thein Baffle is basically 50% and when you factor in static pressure loss from ducting the reality is you're airflow horrible. Yes, the air coming out of the dust collector is clean but if you're only collecting and filtering 30% of the dust it doesn't matter, even if you are filtering to .5 microns. You'd be better off collecting more dust but only 1 or even 5 microns. Also, the only tools that will be adequate for this collector are the planer and jointer. Every other tool needs upgraded hoods to actually be effective at collecting the dust -- quality collector or not. My new setup is much, much, much improved. I'll post a video soon if I can.
@Letsroll000

I built a similar setup but used tips from multiple projects I had seen. Also had in mind to change out the impeller if needed but after paying close attention to everything being sealed and I added a baffle under the ring of the dust collector with a 5 gallon bucket for the dust.....I'm happy with the suction of it. Actually splitting off with blast gates on the cart to a floor sweep and it functions great but I don't use the floor sweep very often think I'm going to disconnect all that have one hose that I connect to what machine I'm running. Also used the dust right quick connect to make that connection easier. Thanks for replying, your video is one that gave some ideas early on and was a great video. When I tested it out the hose would actually lock up on the floor when sucking up dust. So seems to have plenty of suction for what I was wanting and performs great. Always room for tweaking tho 👍

+Tom Mullen I've had it setup this way for almost 2 years now. I spend a decent amount of time in the shop and it's probably running a total of 2 hours a week, so ~200 maybe? I have a remote start/stop so I shut it down when not actually cutting something. It's held up fine. I read somewhere that someone was concerned about bearing problems but I find it hard to believe. I've pulled other motors and dust collectors apart. The DC is just a motor with a impeller attached. There's no additional engineering that goes into all these dust collectors, drill press or any other tool that has the spindle in a vertical plane. I wouldn't worry at all about it.

Dan Borello I purchased the parts in store at Woodcraft. It's a 90* 4" elbow and a 5" to 4" reducer. Just cut the holes in the plywood and glue them in with a hot glue gun. Beyond that you should be good to go. Goodluck!

@@terencenewlin5265 that’s not what you said though, I agree with that. The benefit of changing to this from the stock system is huge and worth every penny. If someone can afford a much better system then that should go for it as it’s worth it, but others have to make due or can’t justify the cost due to it being a hobby. It’s a very worthy upgrade, and one of many possible to help improve for those inexpensively on a budget. As to cleaning wood chips out of the filter, not an issue, or let’s says I’ve never had an issue. At some point I’ll upgrade to a better system that can truly pull all the harmful dust from the air and not just keep the shop clean of debris. For now, it’s garage doors open and a respirator.

You'll need to replace that Wynn Filter every 6 months or so - that means thousands of dollars over 5 years. It's not truly washable as water doesn't expel anywhere close to all the particles that'll clog the filter baffles - it'll cake and cause filter caking effect, constraining airflow, straining the motor and destroying your blower over time.

There are three turnbuckles on the inside that pull it down. I was getting a small leak on the side so I added a small strap across top to pull it down.

Been doing a bit of researching of this mod for the HF collector, which I hope to adapt to my new HF. Of the many designs I have seen so far, some similar to yours, I like what you`ve done. But, after putting my stock unit together yesterday, How is that 50lb motor assembly held up there, the way you have it, with just the small 45 degree braces at the bottom? Seems the weight of the motor would put too much pressure towards the filter? Also, was thinking, it would be a nice idea to get another HF stock, cylindrical separator (piece between the upper filter and the lower plastic bag) to put under the motor assembly. Then modify it with the baffle/separator to sit on the garbage can. The shape of this stock piece, plus the side input might also help in less drag?
@thesergeant3524
@thesergeant3524 10 жыл бұрын
Ya, I was surprised that the the small braces held the motor as well. I'm actually in the process of redesigning this setup and am going to be welding it out of 1-1/4" 16G steel. It works for the timing being but I really question it's long term durability. A 2nd HF cylindrical separator would be be great. You're absolutely right regarding the shape and side input. Google "Thien Tophat", it's basically exactly what you're describing. Goodluck!

I purchased the POWERTEC 70001 Dust Collector Bag, 20-Inch x 31-Inch, 1 Micron bag from Amazon.. has anyone else tried this bag.. I see and read the review.. seem to be great.. plus only 27.00.. building a dust collector with a HF 2 hp and super dust deputy.. just asking..plus making portable so I can roll it outdoor in summer months ..
@thesergeant3524

The problem with the fabric bags is that they limit the airflow being expelled through the filter. A 1 micron bag will further limit that airflow. The problem with these HF dust collectors is that they have a small impeller size and aren't really a true 2hp unit. So you're already starting off at a disadvantage. Once you add a SDD (or thien baffle) 10' of flexible hose and a one micron bag filter your airflow is going to drop dramatically. Don't get me wrong, the machine will still collect chips but there just isn't enough CFM, air velocity and static pressure to catch the fine stuff. That 1 micron bag is actually limiting your dust collector's ability to actually capture the fine stuff at the source. What it does end up capturing it will filter but I suspect your have plenty more fine dust floating around because the dust collector can't capture it. The difference between the 1 micron bag and the 1 micron pleated filter is that you're getting much great surface area from the pleated filter so that air can escape faster, allowing for greater airflow. If it were me I would hold off on the 1 micron bag and save up for a pleated filter. If not, I'd suggest using a N95 or N100 respirator while you work. Dust is no joke. I got slack about it and paid the price. Goodluck!

you can replace that impeller with a 12" from rincon with reverse curved blades, it will increase air flow and reduce the load on the motor. And its a direct drop in replacement.

With the art work that I make I do a great deal of sanding, very fine sanding in fact. I understand a separater will separate larger or heavier wood pieces but do fine dust particles simply go direct to the filter and then clog up the filter?
Is this the best upgrade for a single stage dust collector?
