Pretty cool trailer! I used to have a folding trailer like that one. I got it at Sam's 26 or 27 years ago. It towed like a dream! Moved people in it; hauled lawn mowers; camping gear and so much more....couldn't back it up and park it worth a flip!!! It had a short tongue on it that made it impossible to put where you wanted it.
@TheFurrminator9 жыл бұрын
Thank you, yea these trailers are awesome but the short tongue does make it a lil more difficult to back up. Thank you for watching
@showcasecharlie117 жыл бұрын
Jeff Furr you can get or make a "stinger" hitch. it's like your regular 2" square reciever ball setup but the square tube is longer. I use one on my pickup for pulling short tongued trailers. it basically puts your trailer ball farther back from the reciever.

I like how when you point something out, you tell why you did what you did. Lots of thought went into this, and I have to say, I'm inspired to do something like this myself. I was interested in getting a pop-up camper, but I honestly believe that I would have a lot more enjoyment making something like this! A well placed tarp and mosquito net and you have a travel trailer! Kudos to you!

Great video and good job on the trailer. I am Canadian and use to go to Florida/Georgia usually from November to April in a home made camper that I made. I am a contractor so have a pretty good understanding on how to build things. The only thing that I could suggest is drop down jack supports in all four corners of your trailer. So, when you are doing stuff on your table or what ever, the support jacks will keep the trailer stable. I slept in mine and every time I turned over, the whole trailer would move so I added the support legs and fixed the problem. Again, nice to see a handy person doing his own thing. Cheers

Thank you, I agree and those jacks are definitely an addition that will be made in the future. Thanks for watching

Jeff Furr Agree! But 1st... Great job as you can tell by comments! Appeals to car guys, DIY guys, camping guys and even those tiny home guys. I had a pop up that was given to me and all chewed up, so I knocked off the top and used it as a trailer, but most important about that you could pick off the jacks mentioned above and possibly even the canopy crank system that you hook your drill to crank it open your top. Again, great video, great work, thanks for posting and I will subscribe.

Thank you so much and you are right, you don't need a travel trailer or camper to have a great time with your kids. Get you an inexpensive trailer to haul your gear, fix it up to fit your needs and take off. Your boys would probably love tent camping more than an RV anyway. I'd prefer to have made this into a tiny camper, which is what I'm going to do. To each his own. The great thing about watching videos like this is I can nitpick what someone else has done and implement the ideas into my build. That being said, pretty incredible build. Professional quality.

Rodney Jordan thank you, I really appreciate that. When I purchased the trailer, my plans were to build a teardrop camper. After putting about three months of thought into the build, I decided a teardrop wasn’t really the best idea at that time since we have five kids and they go where we go. I decided to stick with tent camping and the trailer turned into the gear hauler you see. We have since purchased a travel trailer and I do plan to build a teardrop at some point, just for the fun and experience. Good luck with your build and thank you for watching

I know this is a older video, but anyone else watching this, I would highly recommend reinforcing the front tongue. I've had my 4x8 trailer for the better part of 10+ years and the tongue has started to become crooked and bent. From years of hauling around stuff. I guess from the weight pushing forward when pushing on the breaks, since the trailer has no breaks.

Looks great. You gave me a couple of ideas for mine. One comment. You are concerned about the front box (with the electric) getting water in it. You may want to move the air vent from the front to one or both of the sides of that front box. I can see you driving in the rain, and that vent catching water. Just a thought.
@TheFurrminator8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, so far I've been able to avoid driving in the rain but that's a good idea. I hope you are able to use some ideas from this build. Thank you for watching

@JackG797 жыл бұрын
very VERY simple fix for that vent... to keep the water out... just put one of those dryer vents like on the outside of a house over it... The hood will keep the rain rolling down and you could even attach it so that your vent is high enough inside of the hood that rain would stay out even on the highway.

@1crazynordlander9 жыл бұрын
***** True, but the fact that this trailer has sides that gives it a whole lot more strength. Not sure that he is even close to a ton of weight total on this trailer. Just when you change the diameter of the tire the bearings and the tire are going to last a lot longer. I believe because of the cost of tires these trailer manufacturers skimp on axles and tires to save money and rate them solely on axle capacities. Of course if something breaks and kills someone the trailer manufacturer is no longer liable but the person doing the modifications is. As soon as he built the enclosure on this trailer the warranty and liability is shifted to the owner and it is up to the insurance company and the state whether or not they will insure it or license it. A good corporate lawyer could prove the manufacturer is not responsible just because you put larger bolts to hold the license plate on than what came with the trailer or upgraded the lights to LED.

I have the same compartment up front for solar/battery storage, but mounted my spare tire to the front of it. I love the water jug brackets, the table tops and the water tank...I'll be adding those in the spring. My top hinges on the front, rather than the side, and I installed mosquito netting that drops down when the top is opened, forming a tent. I installed two 8 foot 'legs' on hinges so that when I open the top, the legs automatically fold down and support the weight. I have a hinged cot inside. I am installing brackets for an outdoor gas grill on one side. Good looking trailer! Oh, and I spray-painted mine in camo.

A friend of mine gave me this idea, and it's already paid off. He buys a spindle, hub, and wheel bearings to match the ones on the trailer. He then mounts the spindle on the trailer, you would have to decide yourself what would work best for you. Now, mount the hub, bearings, and dust cap on the spindle, then mount your spare tire to that assembly. Not only do you have a spare tire, you have a spare hub assembly if you happen to have wheel bearing problems on the road. When I put the spindle nut on it, I only put a slight bend in the cotter pin, so it's easy to insert and remove. Although I do keep a few extra in the tool box, just in case I lose the one on the spare. Oh, of course make sure the spare assemblies bearings are packed and ready to go. Once. in cold weather I found it was faster to replace the whole wheel, tire, and hub assembly faster than changing the flat tire. Of course, the spindle isn't meant to be used as a spare. It's just there to hold the spare hub and tire.
@TheFurrminator9 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that's a really good idea, I like that a lot. I haven't had issues with the bearings on this trailer but I have on two other trailers in years past and a spare hub and bearing would have put me back on the road really quick. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching

I agree. The thinking is excellent and the craftsmanship is very tidy indeed. Your woodworking and metal skills are very good and the results are sturdy and eye-pleasing. You should be very proud. May I make some suggestions? 1) If you put your water inlet box in the corner of your front electrical box, you could run the water pipe from the inlet connector to the tank under the floor of the trailer. That would eliminate the framing box on the inside wall and give you a more unobstructed wall. I would build a water-resistant box inside the electrical compartment and drill a few drain holes (with screen to keep the dirt dawbers out) -- that way, if there was a water leak, it would just fall on the ground and not be a problem inside the compartment. 2) Similarly, I'd use threaded flat nuts (the kind where the threaded tube goes inside a drilled hole in the wood) for places like the inside fasteners for your spare tire. As above, that would keep the wall as flat and unobstructed inside as possible. 3) You could put a piece of 1/2 inch plywood with hinges on the outside of the lid. Raise the lid as you do now, then flip the 4 foot wide panel over your counters etc. That would make a solid roof over your work area, food prep, storage, snacks, etc. A tarp is good but in my experience, a solid roof/sunshield is much better. You could do support legs that go from the ground (probably need screw adjustment feet) to the counters and then up to the roof. You could add a place for a small work/conveniece light over your food prep and dish washing area. (You'd need a little creative thought for the best way to mount and access your "roof rack" but that should be pretty simple). 4) I'd replace your electrical inlet socket. To power your unit as it is, you'd need a cord with a male-connector plug on both ends. I'd eBay or check camping gear websites for a connector unit. They have a water-proof cover and inside is a three-prong connector. You just open the cover and push your power cord onto the connector pins. I'd also have some stress reliever attachment there, too. That way, even if someone tripped over your cord and dislodged it, there wouldn't be live plug pins there for someone to touch by accident. Camping is often on damp grass and similar areas and we really ought to be in favor of everything electric being as safe as possible. 5) I didn't see exactly how you switch between "shore power" electricity (120V) and power from the inverter. What you could do is have a regular "outdoor" socket mounted on the inside wall in the electrical compartment. Run the wire from the inlet socket inside of the compartment to that. Then have a plug on the main wire to your interior socket. If you have good electrical power coming through your "shore connection", plug the main wire into the socket. If you want to run 120V from the inverter, plug the main wire into the inverter socket. Of course, you can also plug a battery charger into the outdoor socket so your battery is being charged while you're using power from the "shore cord". Doing it this way would give you safe and isolated use of your 120V electrical feed and allow you to charge the battery when you have external 120V power available at a campsite. 6) On the subject of safety, I think I'd try to find a mini-breaker box (like a "Square-D" box) and run my 120V circuits through it. That breaker box would be inside the electrical compartment; if you don't have one, you'd be depending on the breaker for the "shore power" supply and if you had something go wrong with what you have plugged into your 120V socket in the trailer, you might not get a breaker that far away to trip quickly enough to provide good safety. But all this is icing on the cake -- it's a great job (although I'd encourage you to think about the electrical safety aspects) and you ought to be really proud of your work. Thanks for showing us what you've done.

Have you thought about putting a canvas tarp on the other side to make it into a camper?
@TheFurrminator8 жыл бұрын
I have thought about that, I may try that at some point but right now we would need a larger sleeping area due to my large family. Thanks for the suggestion and thank you for watching.

I think you did a great job in building this camper! You can go places where larger ones can't get to, and you don't need a monster truck to pull it down the road. Having a trailer title avoids a costly rv tax on having fun. You can easily fit a futon in there! Awesome job!

Great job Jeff and wonderful explanation of your reason for the build out to suit YOUR camping needs. Great utilization of what you created to be able to camp and then cook for you family of 14. Good idea to use tongue and grove solid pine since it's probably lighter than plywood and has a great retro vibe like an old cabin. Always love when armchair critic wants to tell you what you should do based on THEIR opinion. You obviously have a great eye for design and you have something better than you could buy uniquely suited to your needs.

I just use it for hauling gear, also for water storage and power supply. I had considered making it into a sleeper at some point but not at this time. Thanks for watching
@mcearl80739 жыл бұрын
I was wondering that as well. It would be easy enough to make some soft sides out of canvas and throw some cots or an airmattress in it. Either way I like it, it would be nice to be able to keep all your camping supplies in it and ready to go.
@FurrRealLifeVlogs9 жыл бұрын
Yea, I may attempt something to make it a sleeper at some point, thanks for watching
@JackG797 жыл бұрын
Would be super easy to sleep in this. Simple air mattresses... you have the power grid in it. Just run the tubing into the main area with a few clips on the wall to hang the fill up hose to keep it neat If you wanted to get fancy you could even get one of the sliding window/screens out of an old camper or motor home and mount it into the back door so that you can open the window but have the screen in place to keep the mosquitos out. A few brackets/slider gate type locks to close the door form the inside.... I have slept in the back of my truck lots of times with a cap on it, and it gets stuffy. One of my caps had sliders with screens and it was a lot nicer. Have you considered removing the large hinged top, and putting some rails around the top of it, so that you could put a truck cap on it? that would give you another 2-3 foot of headroom, and you could open the cap door from the back to throw things in and out.. then simply remove the cap once you got to your destination? Truck caps go on and off very easy with just 4 aluminum clamps. (I use vice clamps instead with the small feet, as they clamp on and off MUCH faster, and are SUPER tight... You could even figure out a way to hinge the truck cap at the front of the trailer if you wanted to, but if it was me, i'd like the option of removal. Also you could mount that rack you have on it now, on the top of the truck cap. Or some caps with with a set of rails for Canoes and such. THat would really give you a LOT of options.

The one concern I have is you putting the electrical and plumbing in the same box. If you spring a leak in the water line or pump, it could spray into that inverter. Maybe as a precaution, just build a simple cover for the pump, and put some foam insulation around the lines to contain any spray in event of a leak.
@TheFurrminator9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestions, I have planned on building a cover for the pump, it just hasn't happened yet. Great idea about the foam around the lines, haven't thought of that. Thank you for watching

I think I would look for lighter materials than all that wood. Has it been weighed? I think I would try for more of a tent platform than a wood box.
@TheFurrminator9 жыл бұрын
Yes, approximately 840lbs. Empty. There's no doubt that I could have found lighter material but in addition to the many uses of the trailer, we were going for the look as well.thank you for watching

@@TheFurrminator the axle is what I'd worry about with all that weigh. The new tires will help, but the Axle strength is your weak link. Just keep an eye on it. Take care.
@tomjeffersonwasright22888 жыл бұрын
Rather than move the fenders, you might want to consider installing heavier springs. Light trailers are engineered in balance, and the tire touching the fender indicates a heavier load than the springs were designed for. The job is a lot cheaper and easier in your back yard than on the road. It looks like a busted EZup in the yard. The corner posts of one of those makes heavy duty extendable tent poles. We call our trailer the "adventure-mobile". Lots of similarities, and I have a canoe rack on top, and small outboard motor mounts inside and out. Thanks for a nice, clear video. See you on the road.
@TheFurrminator8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I have already moved the fenders up about an inch but I'm still going to upgrade the springs and axle. I like the idea of a Canoe rack, Im hoping to get a kayak soon and I'll be adding a rack to haul the yak. Thanks for watching

Hi Jeff, this is a great build, thanks for sharing! Quick question, for your electric, how are you charging the battery? In the video you go through the solar panel and although that would work, that seems more like a trickle charger rather than a full charge... does your battery charge off your vehicle when connected (when towing)? If so, can you explain your hookup? Thanks!
@TheFurrminator8 жыл бұрын
Thank you and I apologize for the late response, I missed this comment somehow. The solar panel is a trickle charge, I mainly use my Honda generator to charge the battery, it runs pretty quiet so we will run it usually once a day to keep the battery charged. I have not wired the harness to charge the battery while driving yet but I do plan to do that but I'm not sure of the configuration yet. When I do I'll video it and upload it here on the channel. Thanks for watching.

Nice Trailer! I would invest in the time to create a good metal skid plate for that water tank though. I had a semi blow a tire about 20 yards in front of me and the few pieces destroyed the front of my semi's hood or if you hit a animal that would be a bad day also for Mr. Water tank. Great video I enjoyed it a lot.

With the top open it looks like you could sleep in there if you had some ripstop connecting the passenger edge of the roof to the edge of the wall, maybe triangles to fit over the angle aluminum - tail gate works as ingress/egress and you can haul gear in it too... I think you have done a great job making a utility trailer into a very handy little camping trailer. Your counter top might be the best and most used of the improvements. I have seen how expensive these small trailers become when time and effort are put to good use.
@TheFurrminator9 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are correct, this trailer has been very handy for hauling our camping gear and the counter is my wife's favorite part. You are also right about the price, it's a very inexpensive little utility trailer in the beginning but that quickly changes with the upgrades. I would definitely build this trailer again though, it has been a very rewarding project.
