I built a wood box to mount my Harbor Freight 50 foot Earthquake compressed air hose reel outside 40 feet away from my compressor. I cut two 2x8's at 24 inches. I cut one 2x8 at 20 inches and used them for 3 sides that when mounted on a wall would be the top, the rear which the reel is mounted to and the bottom. On the front side via the door is where I will pull the hose from after opening a door. The front side I ripped a 2x4 in half long ways and mounted the two pieces on each side of the front opening to give it support like the 2x8's do on the other 3 sides. I then cut a door out of a 2x10 that measures 8 1/2 x 23 inches and hinged it with two large hinges on the wall side. I used two 90lb magnet closures to see if that's enough to keep the door closed without external latches and they are awesom. Each side is closed in with 1/2 inch plywood, the side that goes against the wall is permanent and everything is screwed with outdoor deck screws and glued except the outside opposite the wall where I can mount and access the reel and connect the feeder hose.
The trick for mounting such a heavy reel in this box is to lay the box on a table and mount the reel first before mounting the box to the wall. I put a 2x4 across the wall for the bottom of the box to sit on and that board is mounted on two vertical 2x4's so the box ends up being mounted 1 1/2 inch from the wall for the door to open fully. My feeder hose comes through the wall into a small hole in the wall side of the box. I used a 90 degree 3/8 brass elbow from Home Depot and reduced it to 1/4 inch using a Harbor Freight brass reducer. I used a 1 inch wood bit to create a shallow recess on the inside of the plywood side against the wall for the large nut on other side of the reel to settle into which in turn allowed the brass 90 I mounted to the reel air input to fit inside the box when closed in.
My air compressor is 40 feet from the box located inside my garage and I use a 50 foot air hose to feed the reel. The reel then gives me another 50 feet of hose to pull out in any direction I need to, which means I have air 90 feet from my compressor. I put a Harbor Freight water collector and desiccant dryer at the compressor with the 50 foot feeder hose coming from that.
