I just got a 20 ton splitter from tractor supply which seems to be the same as this one. It easily split everything that a 40 ton I barrowed would split. Also faster than the bigger splitter as well. It did a lot better than I thought it would. I was doing huge bases of trees, twisted up knots and everything else you could throw at it. Well worth a grand.

Hi Brad - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. An interesting concept that I haven't seen over here. While in theory your one should be faster than a similar speed one way splitter, I would love to see a realistic test between the two types. I suspect that the difference could be negligible overall. The auto return on a single way enables you prepare for the next split and there would be less moving of the wood backwards and forwards. I have an adapted foot operated electrically operated 8.5 ton vertical model that I would love to be able to pit against yours but that ain't possible. Keep on Splitting!!
@nelsonridgefarm3 жыл бұрын
Big Rodders!! Thanks for the comments! I’m sure you know (but for others) Ben over at OGA Outdoors has a much nicer ‘2 way’ splitter that is really nice. In fact he has a PTO tractor mounted one and uses a gas powered one too. I really like the work flow, but everything you mentioned is true… moving the wood between every split, etc. Production speed is cool, but in retirement I just go til I get tired anyways, 😂! Wish I could visit, never been to Ireland. Closest I got was an Irish Pub in London where some genuine Irishmen got me plastered. They were construction workers and just got off work. It was epic for me! Thanks for watching Big Rodders! Brad

I was considering getting the Harbor Freight log splitter, but a handful of hydraulic line fittings or something were not atandard parts if need to replace them. That and had to put it together myself. So I did what most people do, buy a farm supply store log splitter. Still, am intrigued as to how well the HF splitter yiu have would work in my operation. Would be nice to live closer, could have a shootout between our log splitters and where we feel each kne works best and where they are not so good.
@nelsonridgefarm3 жыл бұрын
I also wish it had a hydraulic filter I could change. I think it’s been a good one for my first splitter and it’s still going strong! Thanks!

Question: Why are you splitting that wood so small? is this for a fire pit or fireplace? If for a wood boiler, leave it larger....less time spent. I burn an in home box wood heater and like some larger pieces for overnighters.

Nice work. I've looked at those splitters, but they are not sure they are big enough for me. I split some stupid knotty, gnarly, and large stuff. I'd be afraid to break it or just stall it out all the time.
@nelsonridgefarm3 жыл бұрын
I think the pump and cylinder are plenty strong, but when I get hung up in a bad knot, the pump will keep on pushing the wedge and the metal frame will actually start to bend if I’m not careful. So in my opinion, the frame where the cylinder rides is the weak link.
@NorthForkHollow3 жыл бұрын
@@nelsonridgefarm As a fabricator, it's easy to put strong hydraulic components on a machine. It is not easy to build a machine strong enough to withstand those components and everything people will do when they abuse it.

I am looking at buying one of these and have watched a couple of your videos. Harbor Freight should be paying you because there is little doubt that you are selling these things with these videos. However, I have one question. It looks like you are making small pieces most of the time. Is there a reason for that?
