I bought a vintage Margay kart with the "basic" Predator on it, for $350.00. I'm 6'1", 240lbs and did donuts with that thing until I snapped all the studs of the rear hub. Laughed my ass off as the tire went flying across the parking lot. BTW, I'm 61yrs old............going on 12.

Used to race a Suzuki RM100 powered kart in UK Schools classes. We'd race at the same time as the Rotax engined karts that were then used in one of the adult national classes. On paper the reed-valved RM100 had more power (19.5HP) than the rotary-valved KA100 (18HP iirc), but those KA100 just screamed with a better torque profile. Direct-drive, bump-started in the pit lane, rolling start after a formation lap. Fun times and fast!

I put a Ghost on one of my karts just to see how they run, and they are great, but nowhere near the Box Stock Project (BSP) engines you build from ARC. One big concern is they still have the crappy flywheel that is just downright deadly. CHANGE to the billet flywheel from ARC !!! ... ESPECIALLY if you plan to defeat the governor and go above 6000 rpm. If you can't or don't want to build a BSP engine, these are the way to go. I REALLY like the muffler too... I bought a few of the kits so I could put the muffler from them on my other karts when we go to the parking lot to play. It really cuts the volume significantly and keeps the neighbors and cops off your butt.

@maxstone2566
@maxstone2566 2 жыл бұрын
@@noelvalenzuela4735 I would change it, since I build my own engines and it isn't difficult for me. I know two people who are using these as practice engines for the 206 class (to save their precious LO206 race engines) and neither of them have changed the flywheel. They have run several practice sessions with them and no problems have occurred. HOWEVER, if one of these flywheels come apart, it could be really bad ! I have seen a Predator engine that had one explode and it was governed !!! ... but fortunately the engine was behind the seat on an offroad kart and there were no injuries. Hopefully, the Ghost flywheel is made better, but I would change it myself. I don't trust cheap cast flywheels right under my arm on a race style kart.

_An additional thought:_ I would be quite interested to know if there is an aftermarket titanium connecting rod available for this engine (or any other one of this class). Reducing reciprocating mass has the greatest effect on acceleration and redline, although I suspect the crankshaft counterweight(s) would have to be modified as well. For that matter, for an engine of this power, connecting rods fabricated of carbon fiber should be feasible and (relatively) inexpensive.

the pulse tube of the fuel pump is connected to the engine crankcase. As the piston ascends and descends the pressure in the engine crankcase transitions between positive and negative. The pressure differential can be greater than 8 PSI. As this pressure differential is transferred directly to the diaphragm, fuel pressures are nearly the same as the pressure differential of the crankcase

FYI- between the flange on the 45* intake pipe and the carb, USE an insulator to keep the carb COOLER for a much longer time. This will negate power loss from HEAT SOAK. Most of Honda's ATC's used them back in the 70's/80's- they were there for just this reason. It may not make a huge difference, depending upon ambient air temps, but when you are racing, that small HP gain may just put you on the podium(LOL) after an extended race.

He said go into the engine every season! lol. I raced lite stock 22 years ago. I won points championship one year, and it cost me. We ran 5hp Briggs and Stratton engines back then, but to stay competitive, I had to tear down and refesh the engine every 3 nights of racing. A night of racing consisted of a couple laps of test and tune, a few laps of qualifying, and about a 20 lap race. Even ran that little if you didn’t refresh every 3 nights of racing, you wouldn’t run up front.

Used to run a billet aluminum 3HP flywheel on my B.S. 5HP open engine in the 80's when I was a kid. Once I threw away the iron 5horse FW, rocketship. Lighter, faster.
@soupernutt9508
@soupernutt9508 2 жыл бұрын
Why do you want a lighter-weight flywheel? Why not make one out of Li? Because it's about mass, and Fe has a much higher density. We want angular momentum in a flywheel. So, mass matters.
@reprehensiblereptile187
@reprehensiblereptile187 2 жыл бұрын
@@soupernutt9508 Ok, I can't speak to any of the newer 4 cycle SINGLE piston engines, but the 5HP BS motor (pre-monster), generated more torque, rpm, and HP with the aluminum flywheel, period. Having put the thing on a dyno before and after the aluminum FW, there was a notable RISE is all three. The only noticeable, and provable negative, was the thing was harder to start, without the heavy flywheel to 'store' the energy of the pull-starter. Mass does NOT matter when we're talking about flat-out gokart racing flywheels. On a tractor, or a lawn mower/brush hog, yeah. This is racing and weight loss = more power, more power = more speed. P E R I O D. On the downside, I've seen open modified engines of 5hp BS WITH iron flywheels shear the crankshaft, under accel, or decel. Never happened with aluminum FW, NEVER. You're trying to compare lawn mowers to race karts, and it just doesn't work.
@soupernutt9508
@soupernutt9508 2 жыл бұрын
@@reprehensiblereptile187 So, did you say a flywheel GENERATES power? It's just a piece of metal. How does that work? You can achieve the same mass and angular momentum with any solid material (if it doesn't fly apart). So, why Al? I am an engineer. It's just physics.
@reprehensiblereptile187
@reprehensiblereptile187 2 жыл бұрын
@@soupernutt9508 I could write about so many things involved in this debate. But I'll sum it up in two words: SPUN MASS. Increase it and every (moving) part of the engine works harder, reduce it and the engine works more freely, develops more rpm, more torque, and badabing: more power. NO a flywheel NEVER produces more power, but a LIGHTER flywheel does take away that extra mass, which DOES cost power on several levels. RPM, torque, and HP. Was it a cheap mod, no. Was it easily made to run perfectly, no. When it was finally tuned properly, yes it was faster, MUCH faster. RACING requires engineers to think a little differently about a few things. I know, it's almost impossible to convince anyone with a college degree that a hick with some tools, and a pile of money can actually build a fast engine that doesn't make any sense. Give it a try though, you might have some fun, and learn some things. Just, don't try to apply them at the factory or lab you work in, because they aren't in any way practical.

@18:52 you said it no longer dies when cornering because it has a real fuel pump. Thats wrong. The original predator engine was dying because it has an oil sensor that instantly kills the engine when it doesn't sense oil. Sharp turns cause the oil the shift to one side of the crankcase. It's super easy to fix though just unplug the yellow wire and it disconnects the oil sensor.

A trick with the predator 212 engine me and my buddies learned in a our mini bike drag racing journey. If you look on the engines before buying, look for a like a brushed rough finish on the metal plate on the back of the engine. After some research we learned those are hemi’s, and also perform a lot better. An then you buy all types of performance parts and rebuild the engine and we had to fab wheelie bars lol an side note our buddy made a mini bike and completely rebuilt a 212 and ran it off nitro lol I don’t suggest anyone to do that but if you do make sure you have bike pointed where you want to go before you blimp the throttle lol

I liked the resourcefulness on the cable. I build and ride motorized bikes and I'm pretty tall so want really wide bars. Cables can be tough. Also on a budget, and try to recycle everything. I've even gone so far as drilling a barrel sized hole in block aluminum the a smaller crossing hole for the cable. Fray the cable a little and fill the mold with solder. Solder won't stick to the aluminum. Carefully cut away the mold by hand, (hacksaw or less. No power tools). Couple passes on the grinder ... work great.
