Harbor Freight upgraded the Gordon folding knife... Or did they?

When I saw that Harbor Freight released an upgrade to the popular Gordon Challenger Pocket Knife, I had to pick one up to see how it was improved over the original model. Did 6+ years of market research teach Harbor Freight anything over this time? Maybe not as much as I hoped....

I never saw the old one as I didn't shop there until recently. I do like the new one though. Especially for the price.

I just bought this knife today….guess what….it has the gimping on the non-serrated blade! So strike one of your dislikes ! I did not like the feel of the sharp edges of the scales when gripping, so….I took another knife and used it as a scraper to soften those edges, much more comfortable now! I likeit and it came to $9 with their everything 10% off sale going on today! Ha ha.

Is the Gordon a 2.9 inch blade ??

I have the older challenger and am very happy with the quality of the steel. I ground down the blade to lower the bevel angle and totally remove the serrated edge. I cannot wait to get the new model with the straight edge and hopefully the same quality steel and heat treatments. I was astounded that the edge retention capability of the revised blade. This to me is the best EDC knife out there. I don't really pay attention to all your other detail other than the solidity of the hinge. I hope the steel in the new challenger will be equal to its predecessor.

I love harbor freight. This flip knife is a decent value considering it's price but i was extremely disappointed at how blatant the advertising was. It CLEARLY states 3.6" blade but it's only 3"... The marketing boost they get from the lie isn't worth alienating customers. They can do better and they should.

If you have owned a spyderco you will know the value of this knife!! It is amazing!! I bought 2, and would have paid 40 bucks for one.

I just bought the new model as I wanted the same knife without the serrations. I sharpened it with a lower bevel and it appears to be just as good as its predecessor. I paid full price for this since the 20% discount is no longer available. I will have no problems with this one.

I have the Harbor Freight original model Gordon knife which is unimpressive. But the first folding knife that I found at HF was a no-name pocket folder under $10 but built like a high end beefy Zero Tolerance and sadly is no longer available. You never know what gems you’ll find at Harbor Freight.

I got my Gordon knife today (1st gen). It’s crazy sharp, especially on the serrated end. Cut a piece of cardboard straight in half without any stops right out of the package. However unfortunately the first gen lost the stonewash finish.

@@CoyoteEDC It is the 21 century counterpart to the old affordable Barlow pocket knife that every kid had in the first party of the last century. I have had it for about a month now and unfortunately the new one is not as good as the Ist Generation Challenger if you consider edge retention. I still hate the serration but plan on buying as many of the older generation before they run out.

The cheapest knife I'll use if I can help it is an Ontario Rat 1, which In my opinion is the best budget EDC knife. I carry a Spyderco Manix 2 LW as my EDC currently. Thinking about picking up a Benchmade Griptillian, and a Civivi Elementum 2 for my next blade purchases.

@@BOOGiNS Ontario makes budget knives, what are you talking about? Do you know what that word even means? How does me preferring this knife make me think I'm superior to anyone else? I think you heard that word, thought it sounded cool, and went in search of a way to use it, and it doesn't even fit. Where in this statement am I degrading anyone else and claiming I'm better than anyone?

I didn't even know that HF had knives. I don't have a lot of knives and only Swiss Army or Buck. The Buck ones I have similar to this are the 722 Spitfire (aluminum, ~$45) and the 843 Sprint Ops (micarta, ~$150). This is a year later from your post but both HF models are still available. But do I really want my Buck knives near a $9 HF one? I don't want them to think they don't have to try. Maybe just for comparison.

I seen a couple reviews lately where they stepped up the quality on their newest models from 3Cr to 8Cr which is much better. I was surprised it was running on ball bearings, I figured it would be Teflon washers. If you don't really care about the knife you carry, then I could see this being a decent buy for an average non knife fellow.

A drop of lubricant in the pivot. Use something like KPL or Tuffglide that has a needle applicator so you can get a few drops right on the washers. Should smooth out after you work it in.

I bought the serated one and the opening flipper part sucked.. you need to flip your wrist as you flip your finger.. the second version without serrations opens much better.. occasionally I might not flip it all the way but 9 out of 10 times a quick finger flick opens it
