Great video. I agree that if the races are still in good shape, just reuse them. Assuming the races are not rusty/pitted/scored etc, they are a bit of a pain to swap. Renting the bearing/race punch tool makes the job easier, as well as throwing the races in the freezer overnight. The new Xike bearings in the kit are definitely well made. I swapped mine after 8 years of neglect, It was time to upgrade before the inevitable happened. Thanks for the instructions. Cheers

@@thezfunk You can use a punch and hammer to remove it. To replace the race you can use a race driver made specifically for this or a piece of brass/aluminum that’s the same diameter to drive the new one in and a brass pinch to finish seating it. One has to be very careful using this method so the new race and bore do not get damaged.

That is what you are suppose to do. Repack the bearings every year. However, most people don't seem to do this. I bought a 2 yr old trailer and the previous owner said he never did it. The water gets in, possibly from the inner seal and rusts the bearings. Harbor Freight could get the edge on this design improvement with a seal like a pump seal with a spring and two ceramic facings sealing the water getting in. Thousands of us have this rust problem until the trailer jumps when the wheels do not spin. Thanks for the D.I.Y. advice my friend.

If the rollers were pitted then the outer cone or race of the bearing will probably also be damaged. The bearing set should have come with "cones and cups" or bearings and races and both need to be changed together. Unless, of course, there are no replaceable outer races in the hubs..... Apart from that, an excellent video!

The race MATCHES the new bearings. They work as a unit. Always replace the races with the bearings. Would you replace a brake rotor with old brake pads?

I have replaced dozens of bearings without replacing the race, all without incident. I have also replaced many races that have shown signs of wear. If always replacing races with bearings is important to folks then that is certainly something they should do. If a race look fine I do not replace it.

I've watched a bunch of videos of people changing the bearings on Harbor Freight trailers and nobody mentions the races! The kit he links to on Amazon shows the races come with the kit and one of mine was not a perfectly shiny surface, even though it felt perfectly smooth. I used a brass drift to drive out the reaces and ordered the kit with everything. So far the hardest part of the job is getting the old races out, but I expect putting in the new ones will be a real pain.

Not replacing the bearing races when you replace the bearings is a job not done correctly. Why do you think the replacement bearing set also comes with the races which you failed to show or mention at all? Just like a chain and sprocket set wear in together the same goes for the bearing rollers and the race they ride in! ALWAYS replace the race when you replace the bearings.
@farmerjim-fat-man-do2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should replace race. Especially when going to a different brand bearing. Bearings may be the same size but different manufacturers may use slightly different angles on rollers and and races. I have seen this problem several times in differentials rebuilt at home cause owner didn’t replace the race.
