I finally put together the second HB trailer I bought last fall. The first one I turned into my kayak trailer. I have a video of it on my channel. I sprayed the entire frame with undercoating. All the wood is treated or cedar with two coats of polyurethane. The side's of the trailer are also removable. Instead of lag bolts, my neighbor made hitch pins from bar stock. The pins can be pulled out when the sides are not needed.
This trailer should last a long time. My old trailer is from 2005.

If you use any links below, i get a little kickback. It will help my channel out a lot. thank you in advance. Make sure you check the specs and fit your application before ordering. products cgange all the time.
Here's some Amazon parts options:
These are the lights I bought. The Lights themselves are doing well. But to be transparent, the wiring turned to powder after one year. If you click on the link and take a look at the item, I believe I still get commission if you look for an updated LED light. Not sure. Always check the reviews especially about the wiring. I ended buying aftermarket wiring locally and rewiring the lights. They were using some reddish chemical for snow melting one winter and it wrecked the wires.
They have since gone back to salt.

The gear I used on my trailer projects were from Red Trailer and I believe they are no longer in business. The Amazon links below look similar but I do NOT have hands on experience with them. I receive questions about where to get these Parts, so I added similar one's I found on Amazon to assist.

I must have watched every KZbin video on this trailer and most were very helpful. Yours by far was the best and it gave me ideas for mine. I basically built it the same with stake sides , used Pressure treated instead of cedar , way cheaper., and I didn't paint it . Otherwise looks pretty much the same. Thanks for the great video and ideas.

Nice job. It's hard to beat that trailer for the money for light duty applications. I would highly recommend not using plywood for the floor though. If you use 5/4 deck boards then the rain can drain through and if you had something damage the floor you can replace a board or two instead of having to pull up the whole 4'x8' sheet.

I treated my plywood deck with 2 coats of penetrating epoxy thinned down with acetone so it penetrates really well. Makes the deck almost as durable as steel. Learned this trick from a boat wright I worked with.

GREAT idea using the undercoating! Smart! Instead of the hitch pins for the removable sides, I found on Pintrest to use T-Nuts on the 2 X 4s. Makes it nice and snug!

Could you post pictures of how you setup the T-Nuts for the removable sides? Looking to do the same to my trailer
@tylerperry7552
@tylerperry7552 5 жыл бұрын
T-nuts could be installed on the inside of each stake and bolted from the outside. Would work well for a permanent or semi-permanent install and reduce rattles. If you are installing/removing them often, a hitch pin variant & clip would allow for a much quicker and tool-less install/removal.

So it seems because of the way you did the wooden guards you can’t haul any 4x8 panels anymore. Trailer looks very nice but I would move those guards bit more out so you can still use the trailer to haul 4x8 panels too. Just the thought for anyone considering doing this.

I am about to do a similar build with my 4 x 8 HF folding trailer. I am going to shave off a 1/4 inch for each treated 2"x4" stake. That will compensate for the 1/2 inch boards I am going to use for the sides and should give me the max 4' x 8' I need for transporting sheet goods.

For anyone considering buying a trailer. I just went through a nightmare and not sure it's finished. It took a total of 3 stores. I went online to look for the closet store that had heavier duty one in stock. The store closet to me had none, so I went to the second closet. They told me they do not have any. They had one sitting up front on display. It turns out the one on display they are counting as inventory. I told them I'd take it and they told me no. They know these trailers are often hard to find so they trick people into coming into that store location for the trailer, only to be told they actually do not have any, even though it's sitting right in front of everyone as a display. Very crooked or at least dishonest. Anyhow, they at least call another store but it's pretty far. They confirmed they had the trailer I wanted in stock. What was interesting is the guy was clear to me that they had both matching boxes. At the time this seemed odd to say but I didn't pay much attention to it. I get to the store and pick up a couple of items and tell them I'm there to pick up the trailer. They bring it out in two boxes. The guy gets nervous because he has to fill out the title stuff. Had a 'how to' binder, I assume the store created so the paperwork gets completed correctly. It was a disaster. He was coming things out and stamping in the wrong place. I was like hey man are you sure you know what you are doing. He asked a couple of people for help. They assured me all is good with the paperwork. I ended up going to the store next to me to have a manager review because it looked off to me still. She made a correction but no stamp in front of the title. I went to get the title and registration a few days later. They basically laughed at me. Told me to get an affidavit and correct the stamp location. I went to the store closest to me again for this. She was very helpful but had to call the store manager in the place I bought it from originally. I went back to get it registered and after a lot of people reviewed the paperwork they decided to do it but advised it could come back later as not valid. So it was a nightmare going through all this. Lots of my time wasted. I hadn't even put it together yet. Now get this. I open the large box with all the parts because I wanted to paint it with a paint that would not fade like the factory paint does. What's odd is i unpack a front cross member. In my head I'm like oh wow, I thought this only came with the light weight version of the trailer. I'm like sweet, they upgraded. I take all the red parts out and paint them. Looks great. Lots of time spent on it. I planned on putting it together this weekend. Even though I've watched at least ten videos on how to put it together I decided to read the manual. I almost crapped myself. The manual is for the smaller trailer!!!! They gave me the wrong trailer!!!!! I paid for the heavy duty version and they gave me the lighter version. Wth!!! It turns out this goes back to the comment about two matching boxes. They gave me the small box of the heavy trailer which has the wheels and springs. The large box is all the framing and axle of the lighter trailer. What a joke! I've put so much time ahead work into this already without even assembling it, even have a wood deck purchased and cut. I can't return it at this point with all the registration fees paid, the frame painted and the store being an hour away. I will put it together and see how it turns out. Not happy about it at all. This also means the next person will get mixed boxes, or maybe it happened before me and I got the mixed boxes. This is just a warning for anyone thinking of getting a trailer. First, call the store to see if they are trying to be crooked by showing a display as available inventory online. Two, when they bring out two boxes make sure they match! If you make it to three, demand a manager completes the paperwork and that the manager goes slow. Any corrections or scribbles will require you to go back and get an affidavit later. If someone from Harbor Freight contacts me and makes this right I will let everyone know. I will be sharing this in many places to get the word out.

I want to build an enclosed box on one of those trailers. It shouldn't be too hard or heavy, using 2x2 or 2x3 boards for the framing. 7/16 pywood for the walls and roof, painted with white premium outdooor paint and sealed up with rv grade lap sealant that won't crack like silicone. It won't be true 4x8 inside the box, but that's fine for what I want it for.

@TroysHobbies
@TroysHobbies 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I didn't really talk about the wood dimensions because there's so many options. I used 1x6 with a 2" gap. I just cut a 2" wood piece to place in between as a spacer. The whole thing is only 20" high. My previous trailer had 45" sides and I tended to over load the trailer. So I lowered the sides.

Add me to the cheerleading section. I've been thinking about getting one of these trailers for months, and spent most of last night studying the owners/instruction manual, trying to figure out exactly how I would build out the deck and sides. I first spotted a picture of your design online, immediately loved it, followed it to your video, and you have provided ideal answers to nearly every issue I was considering as I reviewed the manual. Your experience with the previous trailer obviously prepared you well for your next build out, and now all the rest of us who want/need a similar design have you (and your contributing neighbors) to thank for saving us a TON of time/aggravation with your making/posting of such a great video documenting your work. @@TroysHobbies … you're most welcome. I recently did a pretty major build of a self-contained soft drink service kiosk on top of a bigger, heavy duty utility trailer base, and learned a lot of things about trailers from that project, which are now guiding my choices on this, much smaller project. ONLY things I think I might do differently are: 1) start with the heavier duty HF model (1,750 lb. capacity, wider tires, hitch for a 2-inch tow ball); 2) split the deck to retain folding capability; 3) substitute cheaper lumber for the cedar, which is beautiful to be sure, but a bit too fancy for my needs.

Does adding a couple of feet to the height greatly increase its wind resistance? We have a little utility trailer with around a 10 inch high bar around it. What are the reasons people don’t build their trailers taller? I’m guessing wind resistance and visibility? I use mine for camping and was trying to find out best options to consider. It comes with a title for you to register. I'm in Washington state. I live out in a rural area so my registering was easy. The factory powder coat on these trailers flake, and fade easily. I plan on basically duplicating your build, but I plan on painting the plywood with the bedliner also.

Hi Troy, beginning my trailer project. Question maybe for your woodworker, but what size routing bit did he use to round the edges of horizontal boards. Also, is the inside of the board rough or did he sand? I’m using the standard 1x6 size. Thanks!
@TroysHobbies

Hi Dustin. The wood was in great shape. He originally bought the higher quality wood for another project. No Sanding. I guess there are different levels of wood grades. I'm sorry that I can't have the other questions properly answered. My neighbor, friend, woodworker has terminal cancer. 😢

@@dustinetokiko I used a circular sander with 100 grit. I sanded it enough to take off the shine. So it would stick better. The black undercoating leaves it a little tacky. You might want to go with a a conventional metal paint.

Why do folks choose to place the wood sides on the inside of the trailer vs the outside (on the outside of the wood stakes). I ask this because the harbor freight trailer is exactly 4x8 on the inside with no room to spare, so by putting the wood side boards on the inside you lose the ability to through a 4x8 piece of plywood/sheetrock exc in there. I am genuinely curious as I have a harbor freight trailer I just put together and will be doing the sides soon but I need to have the ability to put a 4x8 pieces of plywood in there.

I've been asked that same question many times. I did it with my first trailer and I still do it with my fifth trailer. I've tested it before but I can turn reverse the sides and it would fix that. I would just have to reverse the latches and locks.

What are the advantages of having the open slatted sides as opposed to sides that eliminate the gaps? Is it mainly about aesthetics? Seems like you might get less drag with closed sides which is why I'm wondering.
@TroysHobbies
@TroysHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
Personal choice. My previous one was solid plywood all around. It's much lighter now. I mainly use it for trash hauling. The critters had a harder time pocking their little paws through the solid plywood. It's easier for them to reach through now and pull stuff out. I made the sides shorter this time, purposely. I was carrying too much weight. The solid plywood weighed more than what I have now. Wind hitting the front of the solid plywood caused more drag.

Sorry for the late response. The vertical is is 2 feet high. The horizontal board is 1 inches thick, 5 1/2" wide. You can make it as high as you want. I wanted it shorter than my previous trailer. I have the gap between the horizontal boards at 1 3/4".

I just bought a new 2019 Harbor freight 4 x 8 1750 lbs fold up. It came with the upgraded lights you bought separately. Their version of course. Intensely bright !! Very impressed. You did a great build 👍. The light guards are a great idea. Going to get those. And just because it has a tilt feature, I bought and modified my licence plate holder to a fold up kind. You never know. The stake sides look awesome ! With your permission, I will use that design. I'm going to see if I can find autolock pins for the bottom of the stakes. Push it in, your done. I also added polyurethane washers 3/16 " down the center of the bed, before installing the floor. I didn't like the warp down the center. Everywhere a bolt head was located, I used a forstner bit and bored out the floor so it would sit level with the sides. Anyway, thanks for the video bro.
