Thought you may like to know is when ordering a marine frig please have a look at the specification for the operating temperature limits environment of the unit. Some captains have found by adding additional cross path forced ventilation (external fan for cool air in and an additional vent higher up for the hotter air to flow out) into the back of the frig compartment with a digital thermostat fitted to the circuit can help the existing unit cope that was not designed to operate in hotter climates
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you David, excellent suggestions. We had the refrigeration specialist on board and had already added vents all around. Next will be adding a forced air fan. Great to hear from you

@@HarborsUnknown also when you replace the frig take a note of the model number of the compressor control box. In the warmer climates everything has to work much and tend to fail, in the states very cheap to buy but in the southern counties can be up to 3 times the cost (have seen some $ 300 to 400 us )and some models of controllers number maybe different which can be confusing for the handyman. So if you’re operating in hot climates suggest you put a controller & thermostat to match the figs that you have on board on the maintenance shopping list

You did an exceptional job of maintaining self-control with that refrigerator! Seems like it'd be easier to order it yourself instead of having to work thru Seawind and some Italian company - I know it was under warranty, do they (Seawind) ever just offer to pay you the cost or reimburse you for the order?

Well you could purchase a fiberglass owl to put on the mast to keep the birds away. Not sure how it would go with the electronic gear. Its not wood either but it is light. You would have to repaint it from time to time to keep it fresh.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with long-distance warranty situations. The sharing of everything which you're going through, while annoying (to say the least!), is so helpful for those who are looking at boats (new or used) or beginning the first stages of having a boat designed and built by a shipyard which is local (my situation). The planning, the decisions, the "must haves" vs "want to haves" vs "would be nice to haves," as well as every other facet in the process, comes down to staying calm and focused. It also helps to have incredible food and a wonderful life partner, each inspiring the other to face every part of the adventure with humour, love and optimism. Great good luck and more food!!! (The breakfast crostini look fantastic!)

Why would you need to pay a re-stocking fee? You are claiming that the fridge is damaged and seeking a replacement. ie. claiming under warranty a replacement. Surely they don't charge for claiming under warranty the receipt of faulty goods sent back??? Thanks for sharing. Clearly, that steering post did NOT have enough (any, from what I could see) of a 'meniscus' curve to help handle the sheer load...it broke off right at the bottom of the post level with the base plate and there seemed to be no curve on the post itself, so it was incorrectly manufactured. Boat life can be frustrating. Keep your chin up and Best wishes for '22.

That conversation was referring to the autopilot RAM we ordered as a backup. It wasn’t super clear. Interesting point about the pinion. That’s above my knowledge level but I’ll definitely do some reading about it. Thank you!!
@gbsailing9436
@gbsailing9436 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarborsUnknown AH I see (about the RAM). Look for meniscus curves everywhere in life. Even the spanners and shifters you are using have them where the handle joins the actual nut holding end - the handle doesn't just join squarely to the adjustable wrenching part nor is it welded on, but they forge the handle to the wrenching piece (in one solid manufacturing element) as this makes the wrench much stronger. Another example are Bottle necks where they join the long sides of the bottle proper, even airplane windows where a meniscus curve stops cracking at the corners and helps spread the load in the airframe out into the sheet of metal which is the exterior fuselage. They are a very basic engineering principle.

@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarborsUnknown Its probably because its been machine welded badly, poor manufacturing quality control by them or a sub contractor ...looking at the design it really should be done like a cars wheel stud in a hub.. a hole through the base plate and the stud with a shallow head it is a tight splined interference fit. But that takes a few more manufacturing steps.🤷🏻‍♂️ And you can bet that some one decided they could do it by a one step automated weld to save time and money.🤦🏻‍♂️ Keep the failed one and when you find a good engineer/welder ask them to weld it to full depth .. it shouldn't break ever again.. they may have to drill a hole through the foot plate to get a deep central weld to the stud before going round the pin base.
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice! That’s exactly what we are planning to do.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665

Is the fridge US mains Voltage or EU or low voltage? If its 120 or 240 it may be possible to find a standard fit built in domestic item .. that will fit the opening. If its low volt then thats more of an issue but you can still measure up the hole and the old one... For depth ..though of there was inadequate depth in the cabinet that would lead to a heat build up and functional failure. So you might have to check the installation fitment clearance dimensions for whatever you fit ..you could test the removed one out of its hole and see if it functions the same or better. If it works better you need to provide forced ventilation to the compressor to remove any heat build up. Someone has either failed to check the back and top clearance ..or chose to fit a different unit from the original designers spec. Or its just that unit thats faulty.
