Surprised you didn’t mention how Beth committed no crime (the initial killings are a clear-cut case of self-defense) but Torchwood treats her as if she is charged with a crime. Which is pretty yikes. What they end up doing is less detective work and more witch hunting. 😬
@entertain7us1483 жыл бұрын
They literally lock her up and torture her on nothing more than a hunch. Jack comes across as a violent, abusive man operating outside the law. Her asking for a lawyer really hit home that Torchwood as an entity is even more corrupt, militant and prone to abuse than the police. They have no rights to uphold - they just catch whoever they want, treat them as badly as they want, and answer to no one. The moral universe of this show is far darker than I remember.

An excellent episode. Beth reminds me of John Smith from the Family of Blood 2 parter. A human front who is also their own person, a tragic facade that a powerful alien is hiding behind. Except this time the alien they really are is a callous, murderous monster. Truly chilling. You feel very sympathetic for poor Beth. Terrified of the being inside her.

Saw some classic episodes in the 80s and 90s, but didn't have a TV for most of the 200s, so missed the revival start. Was housesitting in 2008 and saw that Torchwood was on that evening and this episode hooked me right away. Caught up with DW, TW and SJA and haven't missed an episode since Partners in Crime. It might not be the best TW episode ever, but it was my introduction to nu-Who, so it'll always be dear to me.

Harbo's original title was something along the lines of Torchwood's sleeper hit, Title was clever but a bit on the nose maybe thats why he changed it, also Sleeper is one of my least favourite episodes in all of Torchwood as the whole episode has no payoff, that and the fact that alien sleeper agents have impenetrable skin but Beth is somehow shot to death, the episode just does more wrong than it does right

SFdebris has a good review of that series. Essentially, it's far too many episodes for a mystery where the only flies you get are meaningless, and the resolution is a hole in the ground th at can affect life and death... _why,_ exactly? Not to mention with how that conflicts with the fact that Earth is supposed to have a Racnoss ship in the middle of it. Oh, and the entire plot with the paedophile was nonsensical and frankly disgusting.
