There’s something great about the similarity between the raven and the mummy on the Orient Express. There’s a fresh example in our minds of an inevitable, oncoming death that can’t be fought, run from, pleaded or bargained with. This time it is Clara who got the figurative countdown on the screen. What’s more they kinda close the loop; since Orient Express was supposed to be Clara’s last adventure but she stuck around, in some ways starting this inevitable countdown then and there. Even though we couldn’t see it, her death at her own hand started there. Even if unintentional, having these two episodes as mirrors is fantastic. The Doctor faces a similar threat twice; once with time, resources, and the detachment to stop it. Once with none of that.

I guess I land in the middle. I think bringing back Clara to help the Doctor escape Gallifrey (again) and helping him steal a TARDIS is great and all, and I love Clara as a companion, but giving her a pass to do and go where/whenever undercuts her death. Making the Doctor own up to him having to truly let Clara go would have brought the final stages of grief that was set up to pay off. Forcing her back into her moment would really let him know it's over.

The best Companion depature for the best Companion ever. This story sets up so well Heaven Sent, and even Hell Bent I must admit, that they are basically an intertwined trilogy. It also shows how so closely linked the Doctor and Clara are to each other and how losing her stikes such a killing blow to him. As Missy said to his face, he would do anything for her, even go to Hell for her, and he basically did in the next story. They did have a profound, platonic love for one another, and breaking that bond was too much for the Doctor to bear. These two were meant to be together, perfect for one another, yet at the same time destined to be torn apart because of their reckless natures. Their destiny was doomed from the start, but this first of a three part epilouge is the perfect send off, and fairwell, to Clara and the unique relationship/ bond she shared with the Doctor. She tried to be just like him and died because of it. But the connection between these two will endure and never be broken. Now it's on to the the masterpiece that is Heaven Sent. 4 and a half billion years in the making.

I'm a bit late, but i need to add to this: Watching some character departure makes you realize how the doctor forms different bonds with them, depending on how they met. 10th loved Rose like 11th lover Amy like 12 loved Clara, because of what 11th said "you are the first face this face saw". Their first companion after regeneration. Of course, they do develop another huge bond with someone else. 10th and Donna had a really strong bond because of how she saved him, he was there in his dark moment when he almost gave up.

This episode always makes me cry my eyes out. Great review. I especially appreciate your point about how this is the first time in NuWho that the Doctor and the companion truly get to say goodbye. It's so poignant and beautiful and really emphasizes Clara's agency. This was, after all, her choice, a consequence of her actions. The episode sets of Heaven Sent and Hell Bent so well. Heaven Sent of course is a classic but I also adore Hell Bent, and how it continues to emphasize Clara's agency

Face the Raven and Heaven Sent were some of the best episodes the revival's had. Even as someone that quite heavily disliked Clara, even I have to admit it was quite the gut punch for her to die that way, but it was written so well and worked so well for both her character and the situation. @@deadpooldan9862 Yeah, he was dead, and the Jane Austen relationship was brought up in the series after he died. Presumably, that was at least partially done to show that Clara had managed to move on from Danny, while simultaneously hammering home the idea that she’s somewhat unmoored from the present: instead of a present-day relationship, her current SO is one she can’t meet without using the TARDIS.

@@0th_Law fair point, but considering she mentioned Danny before she died, and Missy mentioned him as her boyfriend as a taunt, it’s pretty clear, whatever Clara’s relationship to Jane Austen is, she still loves Danny and she probably always would. Collepaldi was the best and only interpretation of Docto/companion that there was in the series, which in fact I don't think I will see or repeat again in the way in which both managed to convey through a look, expressions on their faces all those motions that their characters felt at that moment. Coleman/Capaldi managed to convey that feeling to the fans who saw it. In my opinion it is something that I did not see and is not seen very often in the series between doctor/companion that is why it was a perfect complement 12th/clara

I think this story does a great job writing Clara off and this should have been her last story. I do think Peter Capaldi and Jenna Colmen both give a great Proformance in this story. I do like the idea of a hidden street with aliens that is perfect. I also like The Doctor's line when he says you'll find that it is a very small universe when I am angry with you and Peter Capaldi delivers that line perfectly with rage and I think he also deserved an Emmy for that Proformance. You can tell he is really upset that he couldn't save Clara and he is defeated in this story. I am looking forward to seeing your review of Heaven Sent and this is going to be gold.

Thanks for these videos and highlighting some of the better writing that came from Moffat's reign. 12 is the Sara Lee of Doctors... layer upon layer upon layer. I think there's even more in this episode. The Raven conjures, as it has to, Poe and the concept of "nevermore"... That Clara will live nevermore, that 12 will never get over losing her, that even though she comes back, they can't be together... and further, that 12 saves Ashildar so she can die nevermore, and she, in essence, ends Clara's life. Disagree with you that their love is platonic. Absolutely isn't. But it can't be consummated. Clara wanted that with 11, 12 wanted it with Clara. - 12: Clara, I'm not your boyfriend. Clara: I never thought you were. 12: I never said it was your mistake. - Not platonic.

I wasn't a particular fan of Clara by this point so I remember finding the whole slow motion death far too dramatic. I appreciate her character more now (thanks to you) but I'm still not a big fan of her death scene. I honestly felt more emotion over that scene waaaay back in season 2 where Martha gets stuck in an escape pod and is drifting towards an angry sun, and we see the doctor in the window getting further further away, fruitlessly streaming "I'll save you!" but we can't hear a thing. It's such a sombre and quiet scene. I dunno. Course there's room for all kinds of character deaths in a show like this. I just think that I might've personally cared more about it if they'd treated it more like the escape pod scene. Mind you, I'm not talking about how thematic her death is. I'm very happy that it was down to her own hubris. I'm just thinking about the death itself really. And that is entirely my opinion 😊 maybe I just find quiet more sad than a fanfare

I actually thought Clara's best exit was in Death in Heaven. Her lying about Danny while the Doctor lies about Gallifrey broke my heart and made me actually care for Clara more than I had since Asylum of the Daleks. Ending that episode with fucking _Santa Claus_ bursting in and telling the Doctor he's not done with Clara was such a giant slap in the face that I couldn't even force myself to care in Face the Raven because I had no faith that she'd be dead for long. Without that baggage (or the fact that I was right) it would have been a beautiful send-off, though.

Something I just realized while watching this, is just how perfect the choice of the shade being a Raven is... Ashilda is a Norse Viking from the early days of christianization not too long after Ragnar ransacked Linsbury(don't quote me on that). Meaning she worshiped the norse pantheon which Included Odin... the Raven god, Huggin and Munnin his thought and memory. In a very fitting sense she's basically *become* Odin in her own right, or at the very least started drawing upon her god's own power. And one of the many Domains Odin presided over was death, specifically death in battle so in a way the shade could be considered a Vakyrie who gives you a chance to reach valhalla. And in that vein it makes sense that she can't control it once you transfer your time to someone else, as she's merely borrowing thew power.

They *had* a perfect ending... ... and undid it by giving her x infinity lifespan, a TARDIS and stupid amounts of Mary Sueism. If her zooming off in a TARDIS didn't exist, Face the Raven would be a contender for THE best companion exit ever as it raises the stakes for others, shows how hubris can take you out, and it is a more realistic identifiable take on what it would be like to mess with things you don't know. That she zoots off just means, the Doctor can do whatever. There's no plot stakes because if someone dies and he *really* doesn't want them to, he can just find a way to pick them out of time just before they die too. Man, he must have really hated Adric. When you bring up Clara telling 12 not to become a Warrior, [Spoilers for Doctor Who stories up to 2012] It just annoys me because the whole reason the War Doctor exists is because Steven Moffat "couldn't imagine the 8th Doctor committing genocide," but here, he implies that the death of his best friend, Clara, might push him to become that person. That really just does a disservice to the 8th Doctor's character, whose most recent stories at the time of the 50th anniversary had Lucie Miller, the 8th Doctor's best friend, heart-breakingly fall to the Daleks in a heroic act of self-sacrifice, and he was very much painted to be willing to do anything to bring her back, regardless of the repercussions. It was 8's Timelord Victorious moment, and we even saw him switching to a leather-jacket & jeans wardrobe to smooth the transition to the inevitable 9th Doctor's fashion sense. In fact, the story immediately following, "Dark Eyes," introduces the new companion Molly O'Sullivan, who had a mysterious past that fascinated the Doctor, and who the Doctor felt an obligation to watch over, despite being at his lowest point. At the time, it felt like Moffat was de-valuing the 8th Doctor's character arc while simultaneously ripping off it's stories.

YES! that's what I hate so much about this episode, and the "Janus" which is a creature with one face specifically looking into a person's past, and another for looking into a person's future, like... what the hell?

I would say Hell Bent is divisive rather than universally hated. It has an 8.6 rating on IMDB. I'd say quite a lot of people like it.

Hell Bent is FAR from a bad episode, it followed up Heaven Sent, which is extremely difficult. But unlike people say, it does NOT undo Clara's death, it's still inevitable what happens here. Hell Bent is probably nobody's all-time favourite episode, but all the Gallifrey stuff is top-tier, and the memory block scene is incredible.

I liked this story right up until the ending, it felt more like someone setting up their time traveling immortal girlboss spinoff than an actual satisfying or comprehensible ending to the character. Clara should have pulled a Danny and accepted her death. How good a reveal would have been if st the end of the diner scene it was revealed that she had made a deal with the Time Lords? The Doctor's memory of Clara being removed and the return of Clara and the (recently) stolen TARDIS to Galifrey, in exchange for the Doctor not being penalized for his actions. Her final act being to save the Doctor from what she turned him into and what she drove him to do. After spending so long trying to emulate the Doctor and getting burned for it, she instead could follow the path of the man she loves. This is putting aside how in the hell two humans manage to pilot a TARDIS. As much as I loved Capaldi as the Doctor, this ending is what killed my interest in subsequent seasons and soured the experience of re-watching post-Pond Doctor Who.

I really don't get the hate for Clara. Is it misogyny? Is it because they prefer other companions? I can get disliking a character but I'm talking utter hatred. I just read a comment that said Clara should have really died and irl have a grave so that this person can urinate on it. I mean that's another level of hatred and I just don't get it. I wouldnt have posted this if I hadn't seen that comment but it really annoyed me.

I hear a lot of flak of the show becoming something like Clara Who and the Doctor is her companion. This is kinda ignoring the fact that becoming the Doctor's equal in all but species and name was the whole point of her arc.

Why in the world is misogyny even on the table? I don't give a shit what gender she is, I hate when writers play death up for drama and then bring them back to life. It's bad enough when it happens once, but Clara died like three times and effectively lives forever because there is no incentive for her to return to the time of her death. It's the most absolute garbage writing I have ever seen.

I hated her at first and it had nothing to do with anything but her own character traits lol The way she treated the Doctor really rubbed me the wrong way the first few times I watched through. Now I enjoy the way she calls him on his bullshit and stands up to him more. Kill the Moon was terrible, but Clara dressing down the Doctor at the end is a shining gold spot in an otherwise bad episode. "You walk our Earth, Doctor. You breathe our air. You make us your friend and that is your moon too, and you can damned well help us when we need it."

I really didn’t like Clara. Her story as the “impossible girl” didn’t make sense to me and her whole I am staying/I am leaving thing I felt ruined a lot of the seasons she was in. Her exit did manage to redeem her, but in all honesty I hope she stays gone.

The fact that Clara has to return to that moment is meaningless because she doesn't have a deadline. Basically, she has to die *eventually*. So, just like if that story never happened, because she's a human and humans die eventually.

It was also fun watching Clara go down a spiral ever since Danny died. I don’t like how Steve moffat tease Clara leaving several time but this was a good one.
