Another key factor that distinguishes 2013 to 2023 is the fact that the show has been in a transition period from one showrunner to another and even a change in production company. It's easier to plan a year-long celebration when there is a stable production pipeline in place, than it is when things are in constant motion to kick-off a whole new era.

Moffat made one anniversary special, a Christmas special and a 7 minute short. He didn;t even make any regular episodes for 2013. The only reason we got any normal episodes was because the BBC allowed him to split the previous years' series and hold them over to 2013. He was at the peak of making Sherlock!

It’s Sex Education for me, with regards to Gatwa. Just finished the final series and he is absolutely sublime in that show. He’s one of those rare people who just look cool always. Like, whatever he’s wearing, however he’s acting, he just looks amazing (not in a sexual way, I’m not into dudes). The fact he has the acting-chops as well makes me think he could be the best ever providing he gets some good stories, unlike Whittaker. For me, the quality started to drop during Matt Smith’s tenure - I think his best episode was actually his first episode. That Christmas one where he was given extra regenerations was awful. Most of Capaldi’s run was so-so, too. Despite a few highlights that are actually some of the best episodes ever (Heaven Sent, his monologue at the end of the Zygon Inversion elevates the whole episode, and a few others I can’t remember the name of), I found his run to be a bit lacking also. Was Moffat still show-runner at that point? He always tried to complicate things too much. Goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, Chibnall Damn-near ruined the whole thing for me. Even Whitaker’s final episode wasn’t saved from his ridiculous ramblings (the Master’s plan made no sense whatsoever!!), only to be saved by Tennant turning up again at the end, which was a gasp-worthy surprise for me as I had avoided any media or YT videos containing leaks leading up to it. It was a genuine shock. Him turning up, then hearing RTD was back, and the seeing the clip of the coolest new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa annoyedly asking “what the hell is going on?” was enough to grab me back, all the way back to when it came back on in 2005! Anyway, mentioned Chibnall rambling whilst rambling-on myself! Sorry about that! 😂 Can’t wait for specials and can’t wait for the 15th Doctor to arrive, he’s going to be awesome!

After the unmitigated travesty that Chinball's era was, it's unsurprising that people are luke-warm at best on the thought of more Doctor Who. As a long time fan of pre-Chinball DW, I've just been totally checked out these last few years. Having my #1 Doctor and #1 Companion back is a huge point of excitement, but I'm also worried that it will lead to more lore issues, considering the reasons why Donna was left on Earth. Honestly hoping RTD just ret-cons Chinball's era; literally nothing Chinball did made any sense, and all it did was destroy what came before.

I feel like Chibnall missed some really great ideas to explore. Cybermen Time Lords should have been terrifying, we should have seen an enslavement not just of the universe but of time... I'm thinking like First Contact but on a universal scale. Instead they were just The Master's henchmen. The Timeless Child could have been great, I like the idea of shaking things up. It just felt like nothing was done with that information, it didn't really shake anything up. I do think flux was the highlight, I'd really like to see RTD return to more of a serial format like this. The only disappointment being The Doctor becoming as bad as the bad guys by wiping the daleks or whoever out I can't remember at this point... Even that would have been fine if it explored the moral dilemma of her actions instead of lolling it off. I'm also finding though, as I get older, Moffat's seasons are my favourites. Even though I hated on them at the time. I'm also finding there are kids for whom Jodie Whittaker is "their" Doctor... And I think who these shows really matter to is easily forgotten in these discussions about a show aimed at youngsters.

Definitely agree that practically nothing Chibnall wrote made any sense. There are so many plot holes and nothing really explained. RTD would be far better off just doing a reset and going back to the Doctor being an explorer and having adventures on planets. Less saving the universe, whats left of it, etc. If he is going to stick with the Chibnall's universe, then I want to see how the master destroyed Gallifrey, I want the Doctor to travel through the gate and find his people, I want to know why Captain Jack had any relevance to the story and another thousand unanswered questions. The worse thing would be for RTD to keep Chibnall's work, but explain nothing.

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally! Thank you for pointing out that the 60th is actually at the end of the year! People have constantly been complaining that the anniversary year has been really bad because we have no content. But back in 2013, there was ONE special for the anniversary. I know there was series 7b earlier in the year, but they weren't dealing with a change of doctor, show runner, production team, actors, and so many more we don't even think about. The fact that we have 3 episodes for the 60th anniversary month, PLUS a Christmas special just a month later is insanely impressive given the circumstances. Some may say 'they filmed the specials over a year ago!', but the production is undoubtedly more intricate than back in 2013. Plus, dealing with a completely new direction for the show while trying to maintain it's roots by celebrating it's history within an anniversary year must be so difficult to balance... there are too many differing factors to compare 2013 and 2023. I guarantee by the end of 2023, we will be blown. away.

Not quite true about the number of specials for 2013: as well as 'The Day of the Doctor', there was the surprise return of Paul McGann in 'The Night of the Doctor', the (sort of) return of William Hartnell in 'An Adventure in Space and Time', and Davison, Baker & McCoy in 'The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot' (and also a Christmas special for Matt Smith's departure). Prior to this, Series 7B was marketed as big and cinematic, and ended on a cliffhanger that led into the specials (and which was broadcast in May, giving people something to talk about and plenty of time to talk about it). By comparison, there's been almost nothing this year - no series, no specials, hardly any information about the upcoming episodes, and just hype about David Tennant rather than the six decades of Who history.

I don't think it has. For one, Doctor who in 2023 is no where near where it was in 2013. The 50th was the tail end of New Who's golden age. Tennant had only been gone 3 years, Matt Smith still bringing in strong ratings and the show had become a world-wide hit at the height of its powers. Whereas today we've just come off the back of a few of the least acclaimed series of the modern show, we're between Doctors, and the much anticipated second RTD era, while generating a lot of hype, hasn't actually started yet. If RTD had retaken the helm and produced two stand-out series before the 60th then I might expect more. As it is, we're fortunate the BBC went the route they did rather than cancelling the show altogether.

The Hype is very different than it was 10 years ago, probably because the series hit a rough patch that its not really recovered from. However, just like the 50th, the 60th feels more like a celebration of NewWho with Big Finish leaping in to try and give Classic Who the recognition it deserves. Though its done that rather badly. This feels more like a celebration of 18 Years of NewWho.

As a long-time fan, it's kind of hard not to feel pretty aggressively alienated by almost every action taken by this franchise over the past five years or so, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find places to retreat. This used to be the opinion of a pessimistic cynic until "Doom's Day", where fans are exhorted to spend hundreds on a doctor who story without the doctor (can be done well) featuring a primary school teacher doing her best impression of the villain from a 1990's VHS board game (cannot be done well). At this point, I'm going to be driven back to reading wilderness years novels.

I'll echo you by saying the 30th and 40th were mid because it was more or less wilderness years and nobody cared bar mega fans, BBC especially couldn't give a shit. The 30th and 40th are outliers and there's no excuse for anniversary years nowadays to be crappy. Not that the 60th has been, and it's silly to assume so before the actual episodes air. Oh, and to comment on what you said about multi-doctor stories, any under Chibnall hardly count. People want established Doctors interacting for the entire runtime. Not 13 and fugitive for a minute, or the timeless mystery box, or 30 seconds of classic doctors shifting faces (even though that was good.)

Doom’s Day isn’t appealing to me because it’s nothing to do with Doctor Who, not just being not canon but how irrelevant it is. “She has 24 hours to live!” really? Then how come she’s alive in her own audio series and comic books? Time travel? Flashbacks? Or maybe why is this relevant? It’s 60 years of Doctor Who and it’s a big deal. You can have special effects but is HAS to be relevant. For example: Have a DVD collection of all the Anniversary Episodes. Re-release old action figures. Have new actors remake some famous scenes of Classic Who. Have fans be apart of a cosplay competition. Film some minisodes that took place in Classic Who. Something like is will engage fans to be excited for the Anniversary. I mean, they now work with Disney and they could’ve borrow some money to make this happen.

The show is in a big transitional phase this year, unlike the position it was in in 2013, so it's quite understandable. To me, I'm looking forward to the specials, not just because they're the 60th anniversary specials, but because its the start of a bright new era for the show. They already have the specials, the Christmas specials and S14 in the bag, with work soon to begin on S15. I honestly can't remember the last time they had so much Doctor Who ready to go, its seeming very unlikely we'll get another "gap year" like we have had since like 2012

Hmm... I'm sorry, but I definitely think that this year has been a let down. I'm 31, so I can still clearly remember the excitement of 2013. There was so much going on throughout the year, it was like a big build up to the actual anniversary at the end of the year. I mean, on top of everything you mentioned, there was a truckload of special anniversary merch, as well as things like coins and stamps. It just felt like everyone was celebrating all year long, then it culminated in a global TV simulcast, coupled with a theatrical release - it really felt like Doctor Who was this global phenomenon. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to the specials, but this year just hasn't felt special, even though I have been enjoying Once and Future. I'm sure the specials will be great, but in terms of the bigger picture, I think the 60th anniversary year is going to feel a little disappointing.

What the actual? Who was expecting a year long parade? Doctor Who has a birthday that is well known, and whenever there has been a celebration of its anniversaries they have always been around that time. (Apart from the Three Doctors, which began airing in the ninth year and the final episode was actually in January 1973. But that wasn't a "Special" it was just a standard story that happened to feature three Doctors.) Moffat shit the bed on the fiftieth by not even making a series for that year, and just held over the back end of the previous years series, and made a single special episode. (Hey... the man had Sherlocks to make! What's he supposed to do???) Absolutely packed in 2013? Yeah... if you like merch rather than the actual show. There was a LOT of hype around it, and we were never going to believe what they had in store for us, etc... A special, 7 minutes of Paul McGann and a few documentaries. I was around for all the anniversaries, The Three Doctors is one of my earliest memories as a kid, but it was just a story in the series, there were some Radio Times coverage and a few toys came out. The 20th was good, but it wasn't exactly a major publicity deal. The BBC even let the overseas territories broadcast it on the 23rd November, while the UK got to see it on the 25th. The typical in house Documentaries that were of no real interest to anyone who knew the shows background, because (like most) they were aimed at the general audience. Dimensions in Time is best not spoken of, the hiatus years were meaningless, and then we move to the 50th... Lots of hype, very little actual Doctor Who. Moffat put Paul McGann's regeneration into a 7 minute short, and some in house documentaries. I was trying to remember if "The Monsters Are Coming" was as late as 2013, but it was 2010. The show was in full commission, the BBC wanted a full series. They didn't get one. They somehow bought the "If we don't air all the episodes from 2012, we can use some of them for 2013 and pretend they are NEW" bullshit. If the same showrunner were still in charge we'd have had a full series and probably one or two specials. But there is a lot of pre production work that goes into setting up a new cast and crew before you even start making the new series. The fact they've made four specials is more than we should have expected. Maybe it's just that I;m odler and not geared toward instant gratification. I've not even watched Doomsday or bothered following the Who Spy stuff. It comes up on social media without me having to chase it... but I'm just enjoying the anticipation of the actual Doctor Who that will be coming down the line. It's called Patience. The best news to come out of this year is that the show is now being fully outsourced to a Production Company, which means series gaps will no longer be at the whim of a single person and their "other engagements" or scheduling. There WILL be a new series every year for the foreseeable future. Probably reduced to 8 or 9 episodes + XMas Special a year, but that's the way TV works now with the post production standards increasing year on year.

Doom Day pre-order is £23 which I guess isn't _that_ much but sufficient to bring on some hesitancy. You absolutely nailed it about not following Doomsday because it’s spread out over too much media. I’m not even sure if all of it is available in the US. But I’m not bothering to look because it’s too much. And it doesn’t look like it will apply to the actual 60th like comics for Star Trek films or whatever. So why waste my time & money? I will say, if not for KZbinrs like you, I would have completely forgotten about the 60th. I’ve seen very little as far as advertising in the US. I have no clue what day it will premiere on Disney+. I normally mark new WHO on my calendar. But I can’t wait!

I often go back to watch the 50th, it happened at a pivotal point of my life and is a great wrap up to the Time War story, the acting is outstanding, and the mini episodes where treated with the same gravity as the main episodes. Her acting, in just the short clip you showed is terrible, she comes across as that girl who works round the corner, not a deadly assassin, let alone the most dangerous in the galaxy/universe

I never even heard of that Doom's Day thing lol. However, I do think it's a little bit daft to include all of those Whittaker episodes as multi-doctor. While they are technically, it's not what people mean when they say multi-doctor. The idea is that an old actor returns, not some random new one is introduced. It doesn't even matter really, I would count David Tennant's return as just as good (plus Donna, Wilf, RTD, Murray Gold). Idk seems like a pointless point anyway really the more I think about it. Oh well.

Feel considering the waning of Doctor Who under Chibnal, the production gap after his run, and RTD playing the cards very close to his chest about the 60th Anniversary Specials, the returning Christmas Special, and Series 14, it makes sense why this year before has been a bit dry Now, i will say, i do think that the next 50th-Anniversary scale anniversary will likely be the 80th (maybe 75th?) As it'd mark >3/4ths of the way to 100 Years of Doctor Who.

I am feeling apprehensive about the 60th. While I think its a.bold idea bringing back Tennant and Tate I just hate that the attention was almost immediately taken away from Ncuti Gatwa and like he should be getting the focus becuase to me he is the true 14th Doctor. I really hope the 60th de-numbers Tennant 2.0 and gives him a title like The War Doctor or The Fugitive Doctor instead of a number so that Ncuti can then properly be the actual 14th Doctor like he is meant to be. Like with the strong and all but confirmed theory that the character Neil Patrick Harris (who I love and admire as an actor) is playing is The Celestial Toymaker then why not call Tennant 2.0 The Celestial Doctor or The Toy Doctor becuase I have a strong feeling NPH is gonna be the reason Tennant 2.0 happened in the story. Also like will this trilogy be stand alone or will it introduce some new things that will come up in Ncuti's era or will Ncuti start from scratch. Is Yasmine Finney who plays Rose Temple Noble sticking around for longer or is she just part of the 60th cus I have heard conficting reports. I dunno I just think I have too many questions about the 60th and also a slightly uneasy feeling about it in my tummy. But that could just be my lactose intolerance. Is it gonna be an actual well written story or is it just fan service to appease the people who strongly hated Jodie and the Chibnall era? The announcement of Tennant coming back for the 60th didn't bother me when it happened but when I saw the regeneration at the end of Power Of The Dcotor my heart truly sank because of Jodie regenerating into Tennant and not Ncuti. I just want him to have his moment in the sun. None of the other "new" Dcotrs had to deal with this before their tenure. I just feel like of the 60th is too good then people will not give Ncuti a fair chance and demand Tennant back for good and if its too bad then people will just not want to bother with Ncuti at all. It's a catch 22 situation and that's why Tennant being back is super unfair for Ncuti. They should have had Jodie regenerate into Ncuti and then just worked Tennant into the 60th in a multi Doctor story somehow. That would have brought a better sense of balance. Still gives Ncuti his moment to shine and his time in the sun and like let's him have the focus but also it would be just enough of a task of fan service having Ncuti and Tennant side by side in a story. Like the old guard truly handing over the reigns to the new boy. Like if we were getting Ncuti and Tennant together as the Doctor in the 60th it would better appease the more toxic swathes of the fandom by showing that like Tennant and the beloved incarnations approve of Ncuti. I don't think I am gonna change my opinion on this until the 60th trilogy of eps happens.

I feel that what they've done is an insult to both Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa - rather than letting her pass on the torch, and letting him receive the previous Doctor's blessing (so to speak), they've taken it away from both of them and handed it back to David Tennant, as if every new Doctor needs his approval. It feels as if Ncuti Gatwa isn't really the Doctor until the new episodes have aired.

Once and Future is being (digitally) released on time. There are 6 anniversary books later this month. Titan are putting out a hardback special written by Dan Slott. There's an illustrated novel out for the anniversary. There's *loads* of anniversary stuff out this year - not to mention increased output in other media (new Target novels earlier this year, BBC Audio has stuff out, theres a new animated lost serial. Series 1-4 are getting rescaled in to Blu-ray). It's not like it's a barren wasteland in Doctor Who media/merch!

I’m afraid Doctor Who is now a convoluted mess and could be beyond salvation. Bringing back David (I’ll pull faces and shout) Tennant is so desperate and employing a young sexy male model looking type into the role of what essentially should be an unusual looking eccentric strikes me as miscasting of the worst kind. What’s wrong with having an older eccentric actor in the role with stand alone episodes written by good writers who know about science and can give us intelligent stories rather than the cheesy trash RTD dredges up from his one track mind. If the specials don’t feature any Classic Doctor or Peter Capaldi then I’m done with this flagging atrocity.

Well he’s brought back Tennant and his team, Murray Gold and with the new Doctor’s first episode a title with the name of the companion within it! Sounds like backtracking to me. I would prefer a new set of writers taking the show forward and giving us some hardcore science fiction plus maybe one or two pure historicals. It’s going to be the same cheesy, camp highly emotional stuff we had before.

I’m just excited for Doctor Who again. I was one of those mega obsessed fans who grew up with Tennant, enjoyed Smith, started feeling midway with Capadli (but still had his standout moments) and dropped off within 3 episodes of Jodie (not her fault I fully blame Chibnall) To see RTD and Tennant back, even for a couple of episodes, has brought back the fanboy in me I lost for over 4 years. Didn’t even rewatch it in those 4 years. I’m so excited, and I’m even more excited for Gatwa because I know RTD will make it special. And even when he leaves again I’m hopeful what he’s able to do by stabilising the product will mean it continues to live on for many years to come Until I eventually take over as show runner 😂

I just don't think there were many stakes. Like 14 not regenerating at the end, giving Tennant a final goodbye (especially when he's obviously not going to be a regular character going forward), like I wanted to be blubbing at my screen, but no. To say the reason why this face came back was "to come home" was the biggest anti-climax of my year and to say that the Toymaker got defeated with a game of catch was a shame. I also thought that the bi-generation made Ncuti's arrival feel less impactful and didn't give him the moment he truly needed when a new Doctor arrives. Yeah he shined in the Christmas special, but Ncuti was the best thing about that episode in my eyes. I am excites for SERIES 14 though...not Season 1.

Agreed up until Chibnall's era. There's no way in hell that anyone's mind will change if they dislike it. It's not like Moff's era where we had one and a half good Doctors (series 5 11, and 12) to carry it, and some excellent stand out stories. Chib's era is just objectively garbage writing wise, story wise, character wise, everything. And not liking an era doesn't mean one has to shut up about it because they're a fan. It's ok to criticise parts of what you love and you don't have to like eating literal faeces because your gran cooked it

Wow. Being disappointed? Hadn't even OCCURRED to me to be disappointed in it. Must be a "new" fan thing. I haven't heard anyone express disappointment. As a fan since 1985, just getting into the show around the 20th, I was expecting a special, which we're getting. I don't disagree with anything in the video (the Doom's Day thing ENDED for me with the intro video and I had absolutely ZERO interest, but it didn't anger me or anything). Just feels like entitled fan drivel to drum up and manufacture "disappointment" over...what? That the BBC didn't spend massive amounts of effort to do a bunch of stuff. It's just another 10 years. The 50th was a landmark anniversary that just so happened to fall at the height of the show's popularity worldwide...so the money and effort spent reflected that.

Ok I don't think fugitive of rhe judoon, the timeless children and flux should be counted as multi doctor stories considering that version of the doctor wasn't a future incarnation and also wasn't an incarnation we actually saw before as a main character. The power of the doctor was also an anniversary special just for BBC not doctor who so that should at least count as half a point So in total then there are 4.5 that are specials and 3.5 that aren't so even if you count power of the doctor as no special then still 50% of multi doctor stories are anniversaries Also technically deep breath also had two doctors in it
