Scania trucks with overdrive gearbox good for 91mph. I had a merc actros 1857 years back. It was very high geared and out of curiosity I let it run on down hill to see how fast it would go still in the green band of rev counter, 123kph. Still had a good few revs before governed engine speed would've been reached so I guess it would top out nearly 100mph too if given the chance.

Hello David when we switched from Leyland lorries in '87 we had an Iveco Loadstar that would do 78 mph on the flat but the fastest was the next one an ERF ES on a G plate which when I tried it north on the M1 under J28 and up the hill at the other side it went off the edge of the tacho card which topped out at 125kmph the clock was showing at 85 mph! This was never to be repeated as it had to have a speed limiter when they came in. Funnily enough I bought both of these from the old firm when I started up as a owner driver.

Hi Mike the screen does not always catch up properly as it is from 2012 and is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Mine on the flat will do 57mph which is what I was doing the first time I passed him and was still doing when he pulled out to pass me, I eased off as I always do if someone is having a go at overtaking to let him by quicker. I remember when there wasn't any governors fitted. One night we were in the steam packet Ipswich and one of Tim bakers drivers came in and said he'd just driven from Tipton to Ipswich in 2hours and 20 minutes, a record where the average was about another 30 minutes longer. Especially if hes got newer tyres on from when he got his tacho calibrated. This video is sped up, so it looks like hes pulling away from you faster than he actually is. Hes just using the hills, and staying on the limiter unlike you. Quite poor driving on his behalf really, but hey. definitely no foul play here. Just a lad who knows how to crack on

First thank you so much for calling me lad, must be 50 years since I've been called that! The on screen kph is not entirely accurate which is a bit surprising as it is insurance issued. So you also know the way of the tacho check to go with worn tyres and put new on later I always used to do that but just can not be bothered these days, but it gave you a couple of clicks more, useful sometimes. But you could't pass with ease even at that like this guy could. Yes most of this video is at 1.5 times faster because it cut down the length of the video but it was not sped up separately to make it look like he was going faster. Well spotted that though. As your measurement is in KM/h the truck can legally travel up to 96km/h. HGV can travel at a legal maximum of 60mph, not 55 as a lot of people seem to think, on dual carriageways and motorways.

You are absolutely correct which is why I was a bit befuddled when I found out that the Traffic Commissioner's office were advising that if you had a tachograph record which recorded above the set speed limit for 10 minutes you would be prosecuted. @@trainman665 that's not correct. The EU does not have law on a members national speed limits. @cloudmaker3 жыл бұрын
Never thought about that until now but I'm guessing they are geared to be as efficient as possible with a speed limiter so I would guess no more than 65-70 without one. I am hoping that the ones you see going above 56 are travelling down a slope. Downhill with a load on the motorway you can easily be going at 60+ if you haven't held it back on the exhaust or engine brake. Before the speed limiters came in I had several Leylands-65mph. Iveco 78mph. ERF 90mph. When I started in 1984 there was an old boy with an Atkinson 8 wheeler from the sixties coming back down the M1 from Barnsley he flew by me at 65 when I got back he told me that his old wagon could do just shy of the ton! Speed limiter is the worst shit ever introduced. If we have legal limit 60 and really have to use speed limiters for driving also in union of socialist European soviet republics there is a milion reasons why limiter should be applied for example at 67 mph. Additionally engaging limiter immediately during kick down is absolutely danger and silly extreme silly idea. The same idiot from soviet European republics right now started working on passengers cars to make traveling awful and exhausting. A lot of English people will dying and already died because of Soviet European Republics legislation. The only one solution is ignoring Soviet and their legislation which is worth any price. I believe that problem is temporary. Just after European Soviets create federation it they crate newer and worse Yugoslavia with millions of people who will hate this artificial creation.

Hello Joanna, before the introduction of speed limiters I don't remember trucks sitting at the side of each other for mile after mile which can be the case quite often now. Although after all these years we have learned to live with the speed limiters on trucks they are now bringing limiters in for cars over here which I think will lead to lots more accidents due to driver frustration, but of course the manufacturers are trying to make vehicles autonomous anyway as the perfect answer to road traffic collisions. We will see if that is the answer. I think your comment that car travel will be awful and exhausting is absolutely correct. Thank you for commenting Joanna. All the best and drive safe of course.
