You should also try sending this to Skallagrim, he should be more than happy to review an animation of this quality, this will create more attention from the wider community. So I do HEMA and bit of armoured fighting as a hobby, and while I don't have much idea about cinematography I wanted to give you my 2 cents from more technical POV: Firstly, great job on your improvement since VIP! Your movement became considerably smoother, though the hip stiffness still shows a little. However you absolutely aced it in a few areas that I wanted to highlight: 1st: Your understanding of fencing distance is good, you've a good comprehension of the weapon's reach and their realistic applications within those constraints. I was really impressed with pre-fencing and winding attacks, that must've taken some serious work to line it all up! 2nd: You've clearly put effort in researching fencing techniques! While I appreciate you've had to make departures from "correct" forms for the sake of cinematography, you've done a really good job highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in the context of the action scene. I especially appreciated the stances and the fluid nature of guards (something many folks get wrong by assuming their static poses) 3rd: ARMOUR WORKS! Goddamn I cannot praise you enough for sensibly depicting the reasonableness of protection offered by chainmail and the like. I like that you clearly understand the difference in the protection chainmail provides against thrusting vs slashing and the way you utilised the cuts as means of delivering blunt force trauma rather than just discarding them altogether! 4th: Grappling! My goodness grappling! Harnessfechten wouldn't be what it is without good ol' ringen and it's great to see it being creatively used! Overall I'm really impressed in the amount of work you've put into this. As someone in the hobby I had a blast going "wait a minute I know this" over and over! Well done Zen!
@clydeberry85234 ай бұрын
I second this. There were a couple points where I would have made different choices (such as during the half sword bit) but the fact I want to apply some moves in the first place shows how good the set up is. The other thing I will say is that I don't buy that some of the parries would hold. That said many were also perfectly good.
@oscaranderson57194 ай бұрын
the fencing is a tad wonky, but it’s nice to see historical methods get representation and it does a great job of expressing damage and asymmetric weapon matchups. if I had a major criticism I’d say I’d like to see more thrusts as followups and ripostes when someone gains the center line, and more hand/arm hits. arms are considered a shallow target because they’re closer to the opponent and usually have to be threatened to create openings to strike deeper targets. also hand-strikes are just great, I eat them for breakfast! 😅

@@oscaranderson5719I think she did followed up 2 zornhau with mid line thrusts on the first 2 opponents. I'm not too familiar with if that constitute as a riposte. @oscaranderson57194 ай бұрын
@@RedHornSSS that’s true. maybe it’s just my personal taste but it feels like they’re a bit too cut-happy especially when it doesn’t do much through mail. like uh, at 3:15 (edit: woops, fixed time stamp) neither really has control so the soldier could still throw out a stop-thrust after missing his beat, but both go into a long sequence of cuts.

It's fantastic to see proper HEMA techniques being depicted, along with a proper understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different armour and weapons! Amazing work, Zen! I hope HEMA KZbinrs like Skallagrim, Shadiversity, and Scholargladiatoria react to this. Everyone is rightly praising the choreography, but I also want to praise your story telling and characteristation. I love the heroine's personality and expressiveness, it truly elevates this animation. Her smug face at the end was funny! I want to give some comments about specific moments, including some constructive citicism: 0:06 The environment and lighting looks fantastic. 0:09 The music reminds me of the videogame series, The Witcher, which is a nice touch. 0:44 Simple, but brilliant comedy. 1:05 A spear is normally a better weapon than a sword, so I'm suprised she didn't take on of theirs. 1:14 Her running animation looks like she's floating, I would expect a bit more of a "bounce" in her steps. 1:46 Excellent demonstration of using the weakpoints in her enemies armour, by stabbing at his eye. Also, I'm impressed the enemy didn't fall immediately for her landing on him; he was strong! 1:57 Her duel with this enemy demonstrates the effectiveness of shields well, I love how he is holding his shield at an angle. This stance protects his sword hand well, and by projecting his shield forward it protects the user better. 2:02 I love the reference to historical stances! 2:07 She switches to a thumb grip and uses both of the edges of her longsword! I've noticed many Japanese animators forget about using the back edge of a double-edged sword: great work! 2:09 Her takedown of this enemy was precise, surgical, and very effective, I like it! 2:33 You demonstrated a spear's reach advantage over a sword well, and how it becomes very awkward to fight a spear and shield if the opponent gets too close. Grappling is almost inevitable. 2:46 I do not think a strike like this would have incapacited her enemy. The strike to his helmet would have damaged her sword edge, and I think it would have been better to use a murder stroke here, or another thrust. 3:11 Presenting her sword tip is a good idea, it's an excellent way to force a charging enemy to stop or slow down. 3:24 Excellent demonstraction of how mail protects well against cuts. 3:35 I am please you showed the enemy was not dead immediately! Many cuts like this will not completely stop someone. 4:03 I smiled with excitement that your demonstrated a MURDER STROKE technique! It's a very cool technique 4:44 I like that she tries to cut him in her panic, many people resort to cuts like this when stressed. 4:51 The way he uses his spear's reach advantage when she tries to thrust into his eye was perfect! 5:11 Not a bad idea, but I doubt the speak would have been cut with a single chop from her axe. Spearshafts are quite resilient 5:51 She should have understood that trying to cut his throat would be ineffective. I thought she was going to stab into an eye, that would have made more sense. Still, it was a very pointed dagger, stabbing his body as she does later would have been effective. Regardless of any critiques, you have my uptmost praise for this! Bravo, Zen!
