Hard Board Art Surface
Just a posting about cutting boards for Art design. I'm not too big on surface preparation and I see that there are quite a few videos for use of "Hard Board, or Masonite Board" as an Art surface.

I like the c clamp and board trick to keep the blade from spinning while tightening. And on the negative comments, people expect big budget video quality on a dime store budget, then there’s the ones who think you should only cater to their specific issue they are wanting to solve. Keep making videos, learn as you go. The quality will improve as you keep helping others with tips.

Hardboard can also be scored and snapped using a simple utility knife, just score both faces and snap off, works surprisingly well, and no sawdust either.

For us (my better half) the smooth side faces down since we are marking up, or measuring on the rough side. I don't know if she is using oils or acrylics but she does prefers to work on the smooth side. I know there are some artist that prefer to work on the rough side however, they are also using gesso to prepare the painting surface. With that in mind, I would always keep the rough side facing up, and the smooth side down. Keep in mind the board is on another piece of plywood for protection.

Same replay that I gave to others... I didn't get a chance to really follow up on the type of blade other than to see that it was not a diamond cut blade. I believe it was just a general purpose wood blade (since the Masonite board is just compressed board). Also if you did not notice, while changing the blade, I actually had a wide blade on the saw for ripping or cutting railroad ties (at 1:45 min. into the video). You will also notice, sitting in the box, the blade I switched to had smaller teeth and again I:believe it was just a general purpose wood blade.

1st time in a while I've "revisited" this and I'm glad to see there are some more recent videos. Here are some of the links from 2017 & 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnuvmZiMjKtoi5o & kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6bbqIJtaJ52oqc

Suzanne, I used the diamond cut blade for "Slate Cutting" (Cutting Roofing Slate). My better half also does painting Slate (Slate Garden Signs). I will have to recheck which type of blade I used since this video is a few years old. I'll check back with you in a few days. Milt

I had tryed the Diamond blade once and only got about 5-6 inches in before it wouldn't cut it anymore, but my blade may be dull.

Good timing! I was wanting to try cutting on it again this morning. I had the same thoughts as you about using blade for cutting wood because of the material it's made from, so I'm going to try that, thanks for your help. 😀

Right Joe, keep in mind this video is several years old. When I was looking for information on getting surfaces to paint on I couldn't find any so I did this (cut the boards) for my better half at the time, (she has since passed away). I now see there are several videos out there and I guess using a utility knife would work. Additionally here are the two video that are really good with links from 2017 & 2018: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnuvmZiMjKtoi5o & kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6bbqIJtaJ52oqc
