This was to be Episode 6 of my Irish Adventure but alas the portable hard drive I had bought to store the video clips on ceased to function. This is what I tried.

That's bad luck Michael an excuse to go back at some point and reacquaint yourself with Ireland,but what we saw in previous videos we all enjoyed, best wishes, Colin.

Sorry that you lost your footage Michael and you really did your utmost to try and save it. You have so much patience. I think i would have given up early on and had a large Vodka Mak. Look forward to your next trip.

Thanks for that comment, I did have a LARGE Vodka Mac after that LOL. Cheers Michael

Sorry about the bad luck. I am surprised a branded product like that has failed on its first attempt. I wonder if you could remove the disk and insert it into the dvd slot on an older laptop. Pity they no longer put these slots on newer machines. Cheers for now Malcolm
@michaelchartres2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment Malcolm. I discovered (by watching numerous KZbin videos) that the problem was with the disk itself. How it got damaged I shall never know because I have always been very careful when handling external drives, I have now replaced with SSD portable unit. It is much smaller and far more robust. Cheers Michael

what a horrible feeling but well done for giving it a go. i guess its the same as losing a diary or journal a hundred years ago I guess. onwards and upwards . good excuse for more travels 👍

Hi Michael, so sorry for you at losing your filming of your last adventure 😢 but as you say you’ll have to go back 😊technology is great until it goes wrong cheers Al

You are right there Al. Great till it goes wrong. If it was on paper you could always dry it out. Cheers Michael

very annoying when that happens - my phone has corrupted data on a few occasions, resulting in lost photos etc

I could have cried but I smiled instead and shall book a ferry back to Ireland. Cheers Michael

There was a chance but sadly all chances of data recovery die as soon as you remove the metal cover, the platters can not handle a single piece of dust. The issue was likely electrical not mechanical, also external drives can not be trusted as there are electromagnetic fields everywhere so either have TWO and keep one at home to copy the first too or backup to a cloud service.
@michaelchartres3 ай бұрын
Good advice so thanks. I have now bought as SSD external storage 1T. It is small and apparently waterproof and shock proof. It is also much smaller. I just wish I had bought one of those before. Shall probably change to all SSD. What do you think???? Regards Michael
@ThatGoth3 ай бұрын
@@michaelchartres Even with SSD drives they have limited writes (should last years but can fail early) so always have a backup somewhere.
@michaelchartres3 ай бұрын
Thanks, I shall bear that in mind.

Just a thought, my thinking is the data is stored on the disk is it possible to remove the disk and swap it into another old working HD? just a thought I had I am not even sure it is possible
@michaelchartres3 ай бұрын
Thanks for that. It was my thought too but alas the damage is the disk itself. Cheers Michael

I have had Hard drives fail and it is not fun, I got SSD drives now they are not cheap and I guess they could fail as well but I have had no problems so far

get a similar working toshiba hdd, even if it is old,... just working is necessary,..... change platter,... retrieve your data,....!!,.. thats it,....
@michaelchartres3 ай бұрын
Thanks for that but when looked carefully I saw marks on the platter and, as I understand, those were "death marks". Regards Michael
@nageshtagadur3 ай бұрын
@@michaelchartres no harm in trying,... you'll not loose all your data in one go,...whatever saved,.. will be your luck,.. some drives can be loaded on external enclosures,... wd, toshiba are soldered to the pcb
