Third Pin Situation: I saw the following lines on another yt-vid: "Just for clarification, the third pin thing isn't something WD does to stop you using their drives in a normal PC. It's part of the SATA 3.3 spec. If you have a power supply or backplane not compliant with the latest SATA."

I learned on the latest revision of the MyBooks you can get away by using opening tools on the labeld side... as you can push the MyBook Tray out... Like a drawer...

I would modify the sata cable instead of the drive. Then you can keep your warranty on the drive. (though my system has so many drives that i used a splitter that comes off of a molex (molex has no 3.3v)
@Pokanimal4 жыл бұрын
True if you can modify the cable that would be a better option! I would try to avoid molex though those cables are poop
@frederickgrayson5177 Жыл бұрын
I didn't see that he unplugged and replugged any cables when swapping the drive. That makes me think the drive plugs into a backplane directly without any cables.

You can use pcb solder mask to cover the trace. Super glue also work.

ok, shucked it, did the 3.3v pin trick. BUT, now I want to put it back as external. Ive removed the insulation from the 3.3v pin but it wont spin. What is the default formatting for the drive for it to work again?
@Pokanimal3 жыл бұрын
If u completely remove the pin it might not work in the enclosure again

@@Pokanimal thanks, I just put some packing tape on the pin, so its back intact. but no spin in the enclosure

Perhaps try a USB to SATA cable. Might not work but it works for all my HDDs and SSDs, some used to be external, others not.

Hi, I have two WD80EZAZ 8TB salvaged from MyBook. Would like to know are there any problems with USB-SATA interface PCB shown at 2:50? Will the drive work fine outside of this enclosure, without USB-SATA PCB. I somewhere read that it has a encrypting chip on that PCB so you cannot read the drive without that PCB. Is it so? Can you use naked drive without problems?

hello by removing the pin with a cutter there is no risk that the hard disk is degraded ?

I don't think it would, the external ones are more expensive too :P
@KillaBitz4 жыл бұрын
Some of the external usb ssd's (and even 2.5" hdds) lack sata and just have usb only. It's just because 3.5" drives are still made this way that this is possible. (What he didn't show was the usb to sata board)

I did the shucking and installled into my NAS for the past 4 months. I've purchased a different hard drive now for the NAS and went to put the WD back into it's case but it will not run. Lights up and spins up then about 10 seconds spins down and disconnect itself from computer. Any Idea what can be the problem. I've already did a full clean format by removing the controller board and placing it into an external docking station and it runs with no problem. But once I put back onto PCB Controller and place into case it starts then window detects it then stops after 20sec. I've tried 3 controller boards that I shucked but same issue. Ant Thoughts?

Thanks for the video, but you should look at your Optics in your camera because when you're prying it apart you're doing it on a black table with a black Drive case. I couldn't see the drive case at all when it was flat on the table and you were prying so I'm having trouble with the bottom because I couldn't tell what you were pushing on because I couldn't see it because of black on black filming 101.

I've purchased the WD Black WD101FZBX - harddisk - 10 TB. I tried the Molex to Sata adapter, didn't work. I tried the Kapton-insulated tape, and taped the 3.3v pin - didnt work. I really really don't wanna take the 3.3v pin out of the hdd... Anyone got some suggestions? I know you can cut the 3.3v wire on Sata cable, but mine is all black, don't know which to cut...
@faisalnafees84133 жыл бұрын
you could use a volt meter to detect 3.3v pin
@KrakPoT133 жыл бұрын
Thought you couldn't do this because the drives on the MyBook were encrypted?
@yunusdere14794 жыл бұрын
Does it spin at 7200rpm after you shucked and installed it as a SATA drive? I know that that drive spins at 5400rpm when it is used as an external drive. They say it was slowed down to 5400rpm, maybe shucking changes this issue. Have you got any benchmarks?
@KillaBitz4 жыл бұрын
No, the hdd's firmware controls the way it works. wd red drives also spin at 5400rpm. You can get Red Pro's that are 7200rpm i think but that is not what they used, they are more expensive and not as good for external use because they would be more sensitive to movement and use more power. You can't change a drives speed.
@Spike-qh2bb2 жыл бұрын
Cheaper drives but same models must be poorer quality that didn't pass all tests probably rejects so you're not saving nothing really. The lower warranty is for a reason.
@KillaBitz4 жыл бұрын
Use a molex to sata cable (£$1) or just cut the 3.3v at the sata plug instead.

@@johnchalkiadakis It'll heat up.

@@johnterrance3075 Are you sure?? Did you really watch the temps rise with CrystalDiskInfo for example or is that an assumption? I am curious 😛
@johnterrance30752 жыл бұрын
@@johnchalkiadakis I am sure. The hard drive case has slots at the top of it to vent out the heat. If you lay it horizontally, you'll get an overheated hard drive, because there aren't any slots on the side of the hard drive. By design, it's supposed to be vertical.
