This really reminds me of my last dog when he started having organ failure. Very timid and almost turned off following the leash not the person. He always had anxiety of noises and new places. But he loved traveling in the car for about ten minutes before getting as low on the floor as possible. This dog reminds me of my 11 year old fur baby. All the same movements. Protective of me an shy in public. Yet confident and protective full of energy at home. His slow reactions really look like something is off inside his head to me. I hope the owner gets an ultrasound or xray to check his pain. I didnt, I just trusted the vets body check getting a full bill of health and shiny coat. The very next day after the vet I took him back because he was sitting deficating on himself, being sluggish, sitting outside only listening to the birds, and disconnected from world. On day four he we put to rest having spent a full day in the ER. Looking into your friends eyes and nothing is looking back anymore is a feeling of sadness I cannot describe. I don't want you or your dog to go through this pain. Please do get his internals checked. The outside even to professionals doesn't say much. His behavior is what the prior months looked like for mine.

This dog went through a lot. I feel like he needs a new name because he already went through a board and train which didn't go well. His name was said in what kind of a tone and how often during all of that training away from home. He needs a fresh start. Rocky ( Balboa) would be a good new name because this dog is going to make a comeback.

It's so sad to see him be in the mindset of: The world is my enemy. Poor pup has been through absolute hell, that's so plain to see. It's like someone beat the liveliness out of him in every sense of the word. That just hurts to see. A 2 year old from such a tough breed should be rough playing and being all over the place if he meets potential new friends, not crouch-walk and be looking for the next threat in every muscle twitch or around every corner. I hope this lady can help the poor baby. He deserves a happy life without trauma tying him down. I wish them both best of luck.

Thanks for sharing that information on "finding the middle ground" it took me about a year to understand this with our rescue. She came from Romanias streets, has two broken ribs and she was horrified of men and water bottles. Learning how far you can push a dog with fear like this is really hard, but once you get a feeling for it you can truely help your dog get over it with time. This owner seems to have heaps of patience and willingness to learn, so I have little doubt that this big boy will recover.

Oh this poor baby. Reminds me of this horse I wish I didn't have to leave behind at the yard I helped out at (I wasn't paid, I was a volunteer and new management literally bullied everyone and.... I couldn't take bullying because of my mental health). This horse was not aggressive or dominant, not in the slightest. You'd say he was a bit highly strung (not really warrented since he wasn't even a warmblood), but it was just a lot of nervous energy. He was ill for a long time during the most cruicial years, he made a recovery but did end up with significant scarring and was put back into work way too soon. I think this had a profound effect because he experienced physical as well as mental pain. He was a horse that didn't cope well with pressure and needed a very specific kind of rider - he didn't get that until I was literally forced by the owner to start schooling him because almost no one else would dare get on him. Literally the week before he came close to flipping over backwards onto me on another horse only a minute into the session with a new rider on him. I'd seen him tense under the contact and he just kind of exploded, they couldn't get the rider back on during that lesson. I had to get on him then, and everyone started taking bets on how long I'd manage to stay on him. It took months, on my part and his. I wasn't thrilled to be riding him knowing what happened to others, I know it was often requested I ride the unruly ones when they'd been having a particularly bad winter but never actually have a horse that I had to ride when I was available to ride him. I made a breakthrough on the ground when he was able to get confidence following me. He's actually spooked at his own shadow in the past because he's that anxious. I then found that when he was stabled his condition was getting worse; he dropped weight and was just jittery and anxious. I convinced them to turn him out with the hardy ponies if I was to be riding him exclusively. By god the difference it made: he was happier and started putting on weight; I could tell if he was brought in for more than 2 days during the week (weather sucks here) because he'd suddenly look terrible. He came around, I didn't fall off or get thrown until we started jumping; which in all fairness came too quick, but we had enough trust in each other to give it a go. I miss him now, I feel bad for ever having disliked him originally. If I could have afforded it I would have bought him, he wasn't the type of horse suited to that environment. I just see that same kind of bodylanguage in this poor dog at the start. I hope the owner keeps at it, things can be tough but every animal and relationship is different, but there's always a way with enough time, patience and love.

Well from a terrible start in life she now trusts / is happy to see you and your husband (so well done to all 3 of you there). So she can learn to like people. "She has zero interest in dogs or people" you need to slightly change the mindset to "she has zero interest in dogs or people NOW" - don't give up hope, because you still have another key 18 months or so to very gently and gradually build up her exposure to people and dogs. A good interaction today might be no more than a friend comes to your front door, your dog is 5 metres away, she see's you and your friend have a nice friendly interaction (maybe Joel's handshake method) that lasts 30 seconds and then the friend leaves. Then over time let people get closer to her, and for longer.

Wow I have a 8month old Portuguese Mastiff that was imported from a rescue home in Romania to the Uk and he was very timid when I got him at 6 months old. I got a Rottweiler puppy from 11 weeks old to be a play mate for him. He is a lot less stubborn on walks now but he is still not trusting of other people on walks or other dogs yet. I am however seeing improvement every day by walking him and socialising him slowly and calmly with other people and dogs and telling people to ignore him at first. I have found that approach to be powerful as he is far less stressed by it.

Love the video Joel. This dog is going to be so much work... they are totally traumatized and it is deep set. They will take a lot of patience and effort to work with. I want to call out the random movement point you bring up. In the beginning, you should absolutely be careful with random and weird movements around these nervous dogs. However, long term, you would want to desensitize these dogs to these movements so they become used to life. It will help them long term to be used to not being scared of random things in the course of life. Love the videos Joel thank you again.

My dog called Obi, was like this when I got him, we are in the UK, I asked my local dog trainer when to do with him and he said play with him and try to get him happy, once he's happy with you then get him out in the world and get him meeting other dogs and people, which I did, Obi still has a few problems which we are working on slowly, but he is a much happier dog and not so scared of life and living, you have to put the work in to get the best out of anything 🙂

This was what my CC was like when we adopted her at 2.5 yrs old, she'll be 8 in june. Scared of everything, physically abused, never socialized with people or animals. The first year was just gaining her trust and taking small steps that were positive for her. When her tail started wagging, i knew we were making progress. I knew when to push her a little bit more and when i needed to just pull back and end the trip. She loves going to stores, Ace, Home Depot, Menards and any other place that is pet friendly but not pet stores. She was attacked by a 60 pound male dog so she is still very wary and anxious around any size dog. My girl has so much more confidence now and im so glad i found Joel's channel this year. This owner is doing right by her dog.

I've seen Joel be kind at times, but most of the time Joel is simply firm. Alot of dogs need firm, not mean. Too many people are too soft with their dogs and that leads to their dogs not being well behaved. Owners that give their dogs jobs or routines and are not going to let shenanigans go usually have well performing and well adjusted dogs.

Poor thing is super insecure, you can tell its not aggression by his cowering and avoidance of not only other dogs, but other people. sounds like that board and train really ruined his perception of them. You can see him very slowly gain some confidence though, sniffing dogs but also standing tall and relaxed. I'm glad you and the owner are able help him because any longer and any more trauma to this dog could have meant him hurting someone or himself and eventual behavioral euthanasia.

Great video! I can see a lot of similarities with this dog, and my 5 year old female GSD that i adopted 3 months ago. It's not the "get away from me" thing. It's that there seems like there's no happiness. Occasionally I can get her to do a little prance, but it literally lasts for just a few seconds, then she closes back up. I have managed to get her comfortable with "sit", and make eye contact. When she gets nervous, and doesn't know what to do, that's my go to. I'll tell her to sit, and when she does, she'll make great eye contact. Doesn't play, so leashed walks are her only daily exercise. I have started taking her out (off leash) to my property in the desert for a walk and sniff fest. Her "come" sucks, so I use her separation anxiety. Once she can't see me, she starts looking and then sees me, and runs up to me like the happiest dog in the world. Of course, she immediately goes back to being reserved. Many people have told me that it could take up to 6 months, maybe a year, before she opens up. I sure hope she does. I just want her to be happy with me.

Accept and love her for the dog she is but continue exposing her slowly to people and other dogs. My GS mix has slowly come out of his shell. 3 years old, I got him at 11 months. He now loves (this year) my nephew and his dog, my aunt and her family. There’s hope but love & accept who you fur baby is. Much love & respect to you and you GSD - you’re in this for the long haul ❤❤❤🐕

The moment this dog gets some joy in his life & that tail wags will be a moment to celebrate 🎉🎉🎉. Love how you don’t sugar coat it. A long haul & will always be a dog to watch. Totally agree on body movements - my pup who was extremely fearful of people is doing so much better (in part thanks to you) but gets tripped out easy with people coming up on her unexpectedly etc. And the grudge thing - I learned the hard way that you can’t expect your dog can’t move on if you don’t. Though sad to see this dog’s trauma, a super informative & insightful video. Thanks so much.

Cargo trauma is definitely a thing. My boy took 3 days to travel from Thailand, and we had some big obstacles to overcome that took a while to achieve.

As a Corso owner, I feel so bad for this poor dog. It's very hard to make them scared. Mine was never afraid of a bear until he was upsidedown and 10 feet in the air. Mr. Beckman, you did a fantastic job.

But, but but. all Joel does is yank dogs on leashes...this is a perfect example of someone that has worked with 1,000's of dogs and is using what he's learned from that. reading the dogs and with the info hes given making an assessment/changing his approach to try and help the dog and its owner.

Hi Joel, great video as and hats off to that lady. I'm 15 years old and a fellow dog trainer in Australia. I use a lot of my own unique methods, but also a lot from other respectable trainers like you. Thanks so much for the pod and all your wonderful videos. I've learnt heaped. Although I don't have a business, I help a lot of people with their reactive, aggressive and fearful dogs. I have an issue with my own dog though, which I would like your advice on, he is a 2 year old intact male golden retriever, named Lucky. Lucky is an awesome dog I can take anywhere in public, and trust him off leash. I got him at 15 months and trained him using my methods. Like a different dog now from when we got him. The issue is though, that me and my family live on 2 and a half acres and have farm animals. He is fine with the adult goats and other dogs, but tried to kill any baby goat, rabbit or guinea pig. If he was aggressive towards them, I could deal with that the way I dealt with aggression to small dogs, but he believes that they are food, and should be killed to eat. This is pretty much the only thing I don't know how to do with dogs. It's very annoying and also sad, as it's also causing a lot of division in the family, and I have to always keep the animals and Lucky separate. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Baby goats, rabbits and Guinea Pigs all make very high pitched noises which can be a known trigger of prey drive- that’s why they put squeakers in dog toys, the sound makes them want to shred whatever is making it. Some canines are triggered by fast movement, some by sound and some by both The responsible thing you’re going to have to do is to secure those animals and be in control of the dog at all times around them. Realistically it’s next to impossible to keep an eye on everything all the time so working with Lucky to desensitize his prey drive and working on impulse control would really be beneficial along with limiting or controlling interactions. So impulse control is probably the easiest to fix so work on “leave it” and “drop” until it’s absolutely ingrained in his brain. That will get you part way there but it doesn’t necessarily work 100%of the time on dogs with high prey drive. I would probably put baby animal squeaking noises on your phone to play and then hide the phone, the dog will go frantic looking for it and when he does make sure it’s absolutely boring and there is no reward or reaction except you saying leave it, taking the device and turning it off. Right now if the dog has killed or injured an animal it has a high reward value and will be hard to unlearn but just drive the dog crazy with squeaking, smells and leave it and find something the dog finds more rewarding to give him when he properly leaves it. Smell is also a trigger so put baby animals smell on blankets on things he is averse to like the lawn mower or leaf blower. You’re ALWAYS going to have to watch him to ensure safety but desensitizing and making the baby animals less rewarding will give them a better chance if he gets into them. Obviously I’m not Joel but that’s my advice hopefully you find some of it helpful.

Hey! Sorry to hear you’re have such difficulty. I have to agree that you should do what is necessary to keep your animals safe. Whether that’s keeping the animals in a pen or your dog behind a fence. I have a hunting line Labrador retriever that liked to kill rabbits. She is extremely prey driven. I personally use e-collars because I enjoy doing a lot of off leash hiking with my dogs and enjoy the freedom this gives us. There are 4 commands she has to follow 100%. Leave it, drop it, come and stay. After she learned those things a rabbit can literally walk up to her and she doesn’t even try anymore. Repetition, repetition, repetition. I also teach boundary training to my dogs. I have a 20 acre farm that is not fenced but I don’t want my dogs running all over the country side. There are deer and bears and coyotes out there so they know the area they are not allowed to go past. She doesn’t chase other animals either. If they never get away with it they will eventually give up trying. Good luck 🍀

Hope things get better for him. You know besides maybe a bad transit trip and boarding trip it may be possible this fella has an actual chemical imbalance or neuro issue that's no fault of his own. It does happen to animals and humans so it can be discussedd.

Very good episode! I really feel for this owner... She wants to do everything in her power to help find answers & a way to help him! Four days in a cargo hold! My God! He could've lost consciousness from heatstroke/dehydration! We can never know what this poor animal went through... When I saw how he 1. Doesn't interact or acknowledge his owner, even when she touches him he seems non-responsive! 2. Looks off into space Breaks my heart to say this but I believe there is some brain damage, tumor or other neurological issue. I would ask a vet to do a MRI scan of his brain/upper spine. His behavior does not look normal to me, even for a traumatized animal. Maybe he lost consciousness in the cargo hold & got brain damage. I recall owner noticing that he was a completely different dog after being shipped. God help him, and her, make the best decision for him. I would not rule out mercy euthanization. So sorry.

Anything is possible but this dog reminds me of an assault victim with ptsd and depression. He just wants to be invisible and sink into the surroundings. To him the entire world is scary and overwhelming and he doesn’t know any way to make it stop but somewhere along the line he figured out acting scary makes the stimulus go away most of the time. This dog just wants to be in bed with the covers over his head and either forgot or never knew what joy, happiness or curiosity feel like. I agree with Joel’s assessment 100% and would even go a step further and suggest looking into an antidepressant if the dog remains completely shut down.

@@krystal6137 He pretty much IS an assault victim. It was mentioned he was subjected to electro collars and lots of pinning alongside other 'methods' I would bet. That's exactly what assault is, people just write it off as a 'training method' for animals. Dogs and horses are subject to assault and all sorts of things constantly. We just never call it what it is.

I had a client like that and i paired him with a Balanced dog and yhen went and did all the things we needed but slowly and with the help of a Balanced dog that showed him how to use his nose again and trust again...
