I have worked for the same company for 20 years. One thing I learned is that you can never thank people enough. If somebody goes out of their way to help you or responds promptly to a request, always go above and beyond to let them know you appreciate it. This goes a long way to helping you excel at your job. It makes me look like an ultimate problem solver just by knowing the right person to message on Teams. I was in one field and then switched to a totally different part of the company because they wanted a problem solver on the team. This included a nice pay bump and higher yearly bonus.

I think this depends on how difficult the job is. If it requires moths of training, then you can take someone with soft skills and let them learn on the job. If the job requires years of training, then the hard skills become more important.

Interesting, thanks for the video Pat. I’ve been following your content since 2015 when I was on the fence on building my business, now I’m running a 6 figure media agency. I remembered all you talked aboutin your first few videos was to read, and that is exactly what I did with all your reading recommendations in your old videos. I hope you would bring your conference to Singapore one day and I promise I’ll be the first person to purchase the passes. 🔥 thank you for the great informative content. 🙏🏻

Yea if you can get better in both categories, it would be the best scenario. Learn soft skills younger, and that will help you specialize in a skill as you develope. Learning from others and teamwork is very valueable early on.

What does it mean to be trustworthy? Being reliable, loyal, and honest? Or being liked, sociable, and friendly? I know people who rude yet reliable. Would they be considered trustworthy? Then there are some people who are extremely outgoing yet capable of backstabbing you.
@doublevision5465
@doublevision5465 2 жыл бұрын
Being liked, sociable, and friendly is everything. If you choose to be reliable, loyal, and honest, then you run the risk of saying and doing things that might offend others. Being truthful doesn't get things done if people's feelings get hurt or if their reality is threatened. On the other hand, being popular or being associated with popular people means connections. And connections means getting more money & getting what you want, i.e., living the easy good life. The opposite of that is being a poor nerd. Who wants to be a poor nerd? Who wants to be associated with poor nerds? Poor nerds live crappy lives working long hours making sure that they get all the details right for a lower fixed pay. Nobody wants that. Nobody wants to be associated with that. It doesn't get them what they want. It means a harder life. Sure, we need poor nerds like we need trash collectors. Just don't be associated with poor nerds in a picture. You don't want others to think you're one of them if you want to be popular. In contrast, if you're liked, sociable, and friendly - if you're popular - then you don't have to sweat the details. You can smile & pat the poor nerd on the back and make them feel better for a moment knowing that they're at least temporarily accepted by everything they wish they could have or be. Then the poor nerd will do back flips for you and produce a better product for you. Why be the poor nerd who drives a second-hand car and buys yesterday's technology when you can be the popular person instead and afford the latest & greatest toys & gadgets brought to you by poor nerds. So, don't be the guy or gal that proofreads code and makes sure that the construction plans are sound. Be the guy or gal that always smiles with white teeth and knows how to turn & pull the other person's wrist in a handshake when you sell a tech company or real estate property.

If you can't trust their character, then don't have them on your team. But you also need to trust that they can perform the specific function they are hired to perform. Otherwise you have to do your job, plus theirs. But I would say that a lot of managers are fooled by people that portray a higher level of skill than they actually have, they also get more credit for soft skills rather than technical expertise. Soft skills don't matter if you have work that needs to get done and nobody has the technical skill to pull it off.

This one of my favortie videos I have watched of yours, at least in the Business management category of videos anyway. Because your interviews are always awesome too. So much great information in this! I love when someone takes complicated subjects or topics and makes them easy to understand. This also makes it easy for people to share with others in an easy relatable way. I know I am and a lot of people are thirsty for knowledge these days. Because despite having the internet and access to knowledge on anything you could imagine...somehow it seems to be hard to come by, Truth and facts are hard to come by these days, because if you are trying to educate yourself on something you have to sift through and seperate the facts from fiction and depending on the topic sometimes the amount of fiction is overwhelming and can exhaust you before ever finding a credible source or website online. Anyway back to the video subject...I Love it and thank you for sharing!!! I will use this and also share what I just learned with my bosses and peers. and have a discussion on it. Should be interesting. Thanks as always and please keep em coming!! I love these types of videos you put out.

A leader makes people to follow them. A boss is just a title. Leaders are the ones moving things. Amazingly, there are people with poor social skills that you should not get rid of. Elon Musk is a great example. There are people from autistic specter that also must not be judged by their ability to socialize. Being popular is not a great sign of competence. The problem you are having is that you are linking popularity with high performance. If someone is not integrated to the team, it is because of poor leadership. A leader is the one who builds a team from very different people. It is not a normal socialization process like in high school or a party. So I totally disagree with you. People who do not perform have 3 possible situations: 1. Does not WANT. That is the type of people you do not want in your company. 2. Does not KNOW. Training fixes it. 3. CANNOT do. It can be a problem of EXPERIENCE, or RESOURCES or PERSONAL HARDSHIP. I once managed to recover a coworker from hardship back into full performance. It just required some support and empathy. That delayed my job like hell in that moment. But now I have a new friend for life. Knowledge is about locating dots, experience is about connecting the dots to make a drawing that makes sense. All knowledge can be documented, and also procedures can document some of the experience. More experienced people can see beyond. Trust? You can trust, but it does not mean that such person can be trusted. Scams happen because of that. Trust is earned, not given, but even trusted people can make decisions that kill all trust. People very often use labels to trust. "since he is family, I can trust him" "since he has this reputation I can trust him". Unless what is being handled is very secret and critical, there is no need to "trust" (aside of normal parameters of responsibility), you just need that person to get the job done. What matters more is the kind of relationship you establish with people. If relationship creates a habit of positive exchanges, it creates a good work environment. As long as you connect the best of people, a team can work better. People use their time and energy to create revenue. Mental games mean idle time not used to create revenue. You do not need to get people too close. There is a distance in which everyone gets along. But they need to be close enough to work as a team.

Did you know, I just realised something - PBD may not have a 4 year college degree, but how many years has he been doing valuetainment for? A lot of college is about digesting information, reflecting on experiences and producing a coherent thesis on a subject matter that another person can understand and appreciate - which Patrick has been doing with these videos. Although he does like to eschew the college degree in some ways, through this youtube channel he has effectively earned himself multiple non-traditional degrees through the absorb, analyse, experience, reflect, communicate and be assessed (in his case being assessed by his video team, agents, corporate team and by the viewing public). Effectively what I am saying is that through these videos as well as through communicating his own original experiences of applying the principles he teaches, he has gotten his BA, MA and PhD also. Just in a very non-traditional manner. Interesting food for thought.

You need both to succed in your job, just one of the two is not enough to make notable progress. About six months ago I participated in a workshop of a guy that had worked personally with Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos for years, and one thing he told us was that you may be the best at your job(intending hard skills), but if you have to present your ideas and your projects to your superiors and you don't have communication skills or you can't explain your ideas good enough that means that you can't make that further step to be on a higher level that you actually are.

Having soft skills and being trustworthy is not the same thing; you can be trustworthy without the soft skills or vice versa. Also trust isn't a personal characteristic although the speaker thinks it is. YOU trust people or PEOPLE trust you, it's subjective. So the title of the video should've been "Hard Skilled or a Trusted Employee" or something and personally I think it depends on your plan.

Some of those 'high performers' who excel at things like coding, extreme math and technical work.....may be autistic. I think the problem is that the world expects and praises extroverts, as though 'thats normal' and anyone who isn't....there's something wrong with 'us'. Your people with mostly or only soft skills will have nothing to do with those soft skills if those with hard skills who may be at a core of 'creating' the product, such as developing the software of solving it at a technical level, are routinely bullied, harassed or fired because of who they are. Let me go work in my corner to get things done, or else I guess get rid of me and end up pursuing your unicorn candidate, or having no product and just a bunch of social butterflies. I get what you're saying all around and it's been hard for someone with lots of hard skills and can be hit/miss with soft, but managers and companies need to recognize this and that there is no good or bad. Theres nothing wrong with me, what's wrong is your (boss, manager, ceo) failure or inability to recognize and utilize my potential. If only the world was forced to accommodate introverts....it'd be a beautiful quiet place.
@michael43567
@michael43567 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Just leave me in the corner by myself with a laptop, I'll do what you pay me to do. I'm really not with the communication, teamwork etc. I'm a tech nerd & that should be ok. Unfortunately it's not in today's society. We need more credit. The world would be void of modern technology if it wasn't for people like us.

Don't use a screw driver to do the work of a hammer, and don't use a hammer when a screw driver is needed. By the same thinking, don't ask a salesman like David about technical issues. Watch his channel for sales advice -- which he is good at. Techies might learn something about self marketing from him. But ignore his silly taunts about technical skills. On that topic David obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. Techies and mechanical people know to use the right tool for the right job -- don't expect a salesman to make a useful comment about tech skills. Ask a techie about tech stuff. For business owners who run a complete business (we make stuff and we sell it) -- we need people with both hard and soft skills. If you are just a middle man (selling stuff that other people made), then I suppose you are then in David's wheelhouse

Moral of the story: Don't listen to the experts in their field... Experts in their field are not as likeable because they have relatively less soft skills and so they are not as trustworthy. Instead, you should... Listen to the politicians. Politicians are more likeable because they have relatively more soft skills. And politicians are more trustworthy because they are more likeable. And so politicians are better judges of moral character & hard skill because they are more trustworthy, they have more soft skills. Politicians will tell you who to trust. Politicians will tell you who to listen to. Trust soft skills FIRST always before hard skills because soft skill _is the same thing_ as trust.

How do I utilise my being able to get on with people and work my way up in the company. My manager recently had me work on a project where I had to liaise with people very high up in the company doing some trial work, again, everyone involved was full of praise towards me and the work I did. I thought I might get a pay increase which I thought I'm overdue but I only got lots of praise. I'm happy that I'm valued, however, I wonder if I'm missing an opportunity. Unfortunately I don't have any higher educational qualifications.

I value soft skill by far within reason. I cant make my old man somehow be able to type properly, or real wired adhd bud to be able lead a team well. But besides the extremes I can always teach folks hard skills, but I cant engrain them soft skills. Life has to teach folks soft skills sometimes, and often times that isnt now. That said who i value the most is what my dad calls "a living mind". Someone that can think and just figure things out. They can solve new problems on their own, and think in the long term of how doing things right (both the job and with people) will help give dividens multifold in the future. Theyre MacGyvers in a way such that you can toss them into a job or situation and theyll somehow figure it all out and not have to worry about how theyll do it or have them constantly calling you, or worse the client calling you about them or another team member complaining.

This is why China and other countries are destroying the USA. A competent company values all of its employees (Patrick needs to be a team player, not just the sales dept). Companies need technical people to create good products and service good products. Without them, the company has nothing to sell - just a middle man between Chinese factories and US consumers. If a company doesn't have good sales, those products will sit in the warehouse. Good companies know they need BOTH to succeed. This video is terrible advice from a guy who, despite his alleged people skills, can't get along with technical people. The USA was a much stronger country when we valued all contributions.
