This version is a perfect example of why Gillian Welch is an artist who uses music as her medium. No matter how lovingly enhanced the original work is, it's still a copy inspired by the heart and hands of the artist's soul. Brittany Haas' violin cries out the sharecropper's quiet desperation. Beautiful.

Nicely played, but how could they leave out the 3rd verse?? It's absolutely critical to the story being sung, not to mention the true gut-punch of the entire song.

I had to go back to make sure they skipped the 3rd verse. Pretty key to the song.

not as melancholy as Gillian's but nice all the same.
