What they can repair and how they do it is nothing short of stupendous!! Watch the videos where Craftsmen jack up a big dump truck in the middle of a busy intersection, take off the broken axle, bring it to a shop, make it stronger than it was before using recycled metal, bring it back and put it back on the truck and drive it away. In one day!! Amazing. 👍

In the early 1970s I worked in a shop in Tucson, Arizona that did these kinds of repairs on heavy equipment from the nearby copper mines. Most of the other workers were undocumented and we had a couple impromptu breaks when ICE guys came around. The work was really nasty, a lot of toxic chemicals and dangerous work situations (one of which put an end to my career there; after healing I decided I ought to go back to college). We had shoes, but otherwise it wasn't very different from this. Good times!

I was an engineer for a multinational company who went out to supervise the repair of as many of the 14 large machines they had of ours in Nigeria. All but 3 were running when I got there. I only had parts sent to fully rebuild 2 machines to new standard and all the “scrap” parts i stripped off I threw in the corner of building. Their engineers thought this was hilarious. Scrap, scrap more scrap they kept on saying laughing as I discarded parts. They were desperate for me to repair more units so I had to fight the lizards in the “scrap” pile as this was my new source of spares where no others were available or could be afforded by client. Great hilarity of course from my new helpers. Today’s scrap is tomorrow’s treasure.

Grew up on a farm. Dad would use stuff until he couldn't repair it any longer. Then it went out back where we combed through it when we needed repairs. He built a nice cherry picker using parts from a silage cutter that was worn out. Still use it nearly 50 years later.

I worked in a mine tire repair shop in Northern Minnesota for 2 years back in 1969 patching and recapping tires like those shown in the video. Though the people in the video are using some archaic methods to patch these tires it is a spot on demonstration of how it’s done. the risks and environment depicted in the video are real. The fumes were toxic, the dust was real and the smoke was a constant. When the tire was done it was certainly put back into service and very likely was back for multiple patches similar to this one in the future.
@NonLegitNation2Ай бұрын
yeah that tire looked like it was already a retread, you could see a long crack or seam where the lugs/tread where attached to the sidewall. I'm wondering though, i watched another video I think from the same channel like 2 or 3 years ago and they actually weaved wire and string in between the rubber layers to strengthen it, but they didn't do it on this huge tire. i wonder why.

Serious concerns that the structural integrity of the tires is compromised by the damage to the Kevlar belts in the sidewall. If the Kevlar layers weren’t necessary then they would not be included in the original design. This tire may look pretty but is a huge safety risk. Better to recycle the rubber and make new tires.

There is so much air pressure inside the tires under heavy load that bad repairs like this could result in tire explosion. Besides, if working in areas with sharp stones etc you have chains around the wheels to protect tires from sharp objects.

@Jas-r8lАй бұрын
The reason you don't get stressed about the condition of that tire is because you don't work anywhere near where they are going to fail. If you worked in a mine and spent your day alongside the machines that use these tires, then you would indeed be stressed. That tire is a rolling bomb, as are all big or high-pressure tires. I am in no way being critical of the work these guy did. It's amazing, and the best that could be expected, for the conditions. True craftsmen.
@rchrdjms62Ай бұрын
@Jas-r8l I said that about not getting stressed because I get tired of people commenting that "oh how dangerous it is." Or "that repair will never hold." I can't imagine how violent one of those tires would be if it blew. A little tire on a trailer behind our house blew and that was a pretty big boom.

@TheAmd48128 күн бұрын
@Ackiy_Sotona2 күн бұрын
