I have a few thoughts to share on this, hope you'll find it interesting: 1.) Your whole family is adorable, I especially loved your daughter slamming Seth's writing skills, your son promising you to get peppersprayed (DON'T DO IT KID!) and your wife laughing at you for tripping over that goal. 2.) Interesting tidbit related to learning any skills, your wife saying she felt less confident after trying that stuff out is in line with the four-stages-of-competence-model used in psychology. Stage one is unconscious incompetence, being incompetent but not knowing you're incompetent, stage two is conscious incompetence, being incompetent but knowing it after trying, stage three is conscious competence, being fairly competent after training for a while but still having to think about all the individual steps, and stage four is unconscious competence, when you can do something well without having to think about it. 3.) Dudes getting peppersprayed is never a good idea. When they do it on purpose, part of me also thinks it's never not funny. 4.) Hang on to your wife. Her pepperspraying you on Christmas before her folks come over is one of the most I'll-always-have-your-back-moves I've ever seen.

Extremely real. I used to think of myself as someone who can handle a crisis but when there's an actual emergency (accidents mostly, never had a violent encounter) I tend to freeze up and paralyze thinking about what to do rather than doing anything to help. The funny thing about using milk is that there are some doctors who will tell you that even while dairy may make your acid reflux feel better for a while, in the long run, it can worsen it due to the fat content. My assumption about why people insist on things like milk and water helping pepper spray is just that it’s cold and for a few seconds, that feels like relief. Before making it even worse.
@Gege547 Жыл бұрын
@@christianc.christian5025 Milk works because it contains casein. It's a type of protein that binds to the capsaicin and neutralizes it. Its safe to pour into your eyes. In this case Mike also said the milk washed it into his eyes. That's why it felt worse. Probably the cover wasn't perfect and on the non milk side its not went into his eyes fully. Washing your eyes with milk is used by protesters but they also got extra dose from pepper spray. These small ones (like this in the video) are 20-40 ml a bottle. The police uses half liter or 1 liter canisters for spraying. Milk helps but pepper sprays are over 2 million on the Scoville scale I have seen 4.5 million ones. So milk helps like bucket of water on a full blown house fire. Also your Cornea is made of proteins. So if the capsaicin already connected to you cornea you can't wash it away easily.

@@christianc.christian5025 Milk (full fat) will help dissolve out/off the OC which is fat soluble. Mike's issue is he defended against the spray by scrunching closed, then washed it INTO his eye with the milk rinse. As others said (and Mike) diluted Dawn gets off the grease too. That's what detergents are for! But milk having fat to solubilize the OC works also... unless you are bad and rinse it IN!

The knuckle ring is dorky for punching for sure. I AM kinda wondering why punching would be the first thought in using it though. A serrated blade is for sawing usually. I would probably default to putting my hand in place with an open hand strike of some sort and then sawing away on whatever I was in contact with. It's still lame, but I think I would trust sawing on something over impact not wrenching a knuckle out of joint.

The best treatment is 25% Dawn soap and 75% cold water. This is because pepper spray is oil based. The next best is 50/50 vinegar and cold water. Milk comes from people thinking pepper spray is an acid, but capsaicin actually isn't an acid. You're supposed to treat acids with a base. For some reason, we all grew up being told that milk is a base. It's actually a weak acid due to its lactic acid content. It's perfectly safe to put in your eyes if it's kept refrigerated, but it's dangerous when people use milk they've brought to protests or riots because it is prone to bacteria growth outside a fridge. A lot of movie stunt performers use milk in their eyes for underwater scenes. Waterpolo players have been known to use it as well.

There should be some studies on capsaicin, those will have related chemicals examined sometimes. However I couldn't find anything (in 10 minutes lol) focused on law enforcement which would be the goal. Issue is you mentioned Dawn which should do the trick for a vast number of possible chemicals versus milk which only has a few. Dawn is just as ubiquitous (cleaning supply). As usual, you're probably spot on with your assessment.

When my son got OC sprayed with the rest of his team during law enforcement training, he said the best thing to use on your eyes is a fan. If you dry out the eye, it stops stinging. He said milk was a bad idea. I believe his team was told to use a bottle of water and then a fan. But during the training, they also had to fight as soon as they were sprayed, so they were forced to open their eyes right after the spray. The scenario took into account that a lot of times while deploying OC spray on a perp, the spray drifts into the eyes of the LEO as well, and they have to keep fighting while they're suffering the effects of the spray.

I tried lots of things (oil, milk, ice water, etc.) and they all only provided momentary relief, as soon as I stopped it started burning again badly. The only thing that truly helped it get over with was very hot water and dish soap. Washing my hands and forearms for a few minutes this way really got rid of the pain

The reason why people recommend milk, the "source", is because it helps with ingestion of hot chillies or peppers. It creates a barrier between the milk and digestive tracts. But to get rid of it on a surface or in your case, your face, you would use a solvent or a soap to physically move the oil.

Johnson No Tears baby shampoo is the best. The goal isn't to try and 'neutralize' the heat or anything, the goal is to get the particulates off your eye so they stop irritating the nerve receptors. Soap is the way to do that, that's the whole point of soap, and the baby shampoo wont also sting. The key, and hard part is to get your eyes open long enough to get a good flush with soapy water. Source - A couple OC spray courses, and been sprayed a few times now.

That's a really interesting conversation on conflict response: I was in a class about concealed permit, and the instructor set one of us up on a simulator where a bad guy comes into a room and starts attacking. The gal who had NRA Instructor training was zoned in, then when the attack started, she brought her hands to her face in an automatic defensive response instead of drawing on the guy. I am really curious how I would respond to such a conflict, although hopefully it's never a question that comes up!
