Yeah, weapons can kill. You can kill without weapons too. That's why I'm a pacifist. The one time I got mad and hit someone back in a fight, I was in 6th grade. I kicked him in the front of his thigh with moonboots on (like Napoleon Dynamite) and he just collapsed and cried like a bitch. I later found out that I fractured his femur and he had to have surgery to repair his femoral artery because he had internal bleeding in his leg. I could have killed him with one kick if the doctors hadn't saved him.

@@117dude I guess it can both be true, but if we are talking about back in the day where you had huge army's training for actual combat, your average soldier would be trained with a heavier wooden sword to increase their strength and stamina so when it came to standing in a shield wall they would have more endurance. I know professional armies did this, like the Romans anyway from what I have read. I don't know about the history of the katana but I'm guessing it was used more in one on one type of fighting where there is more technique and skill, so you would want a more balanced weapon for training that feels the same as the real deal? The Romans on the other hand would just smash forward with the shield then use their short swords to stab forwards at the enemy.

The reason why most of the Okinawan arts teach to hold at the end of the nunchaku is because of the additional reach that is provided and the extra power, as you demonstrated. Yes, they are harder to control, but that is the reason a person has to train for quite some time to master them. Holding them closer to the chain/rope, are more for control in tricking.

I know I'm late but about nunchucks... the wooden ones I have are heavy and would definitely crack bones. About holding them what I learned was the further down the handle u hold the less control u have i.e. the better u have to be. Ultimately a midway grip is good gives u range and control (of course ability has a lot to do with it). Nunchucks are also used both for light strikes and heavy..like jab setting up a hook. The proficiency required may not be worth it on a practical level vs other weapons but that's another debate.

Citing the authority of my granddad, brass knuckles serve best as an ambush multiplier as it were. There's also a deterrence factor; when your local bareknuckles boxing champion slips on a pair in his two-bottle value-rite vodka bender and starts yelling incoherently about devils coming for the puzzle box and shit like that, well it intimidates a lot of people. Finally, brass knuckles is a torture instrument you use to deform peoples faces with when they're down. Sadly ol' gramps held no opinion on nunchucks, at least not that I can remember.

Thanks, Mike. This is exactly the kind of thing we need to see on historic weapons. I started writing a reply, and it quickly turned into an article-lenth response. Nunchaku are by far the most misunderstood weapon. I will talk about the historical context (of which we know very little), the proper grip, the purpose of the weapon, and why it sucks for what most people think it's for. I grew up on "traditional" martial arts, and as the years passed, I became increasingly aware of all of the faults in how they've developed over the years. This is universal over martial arts from all over the world: when the pressure to be proficient is removed (like when Japan no longer was at constant war, or when swordsmanship fell out of common use on battlefields in Europe) the art that remains slowly loses its "battlefield effectiveness." (God, i hate the internet for making me say phrases like that.) Basically, when it no longer is needed for actually fighting, people begin practicing it for other reasons. This is easiest to see in swordsmanship. Musashi wrote about the transition, because he watched it happen. He literally saw the change from fighting to kill your opponent and stay alive to the touch/tap type of thing you see in modern Kendo. So, nunchucks. I will admit that it was my favorite weapon when I was studying karate. So I am biased, but I'll do my best to be objective. They existed, they are real, but the way all of us have ever seen them used and practice is the "kendo" version. Far separated from how they were used in an actual fight. But that's where we run into problems. Because a large part of it was oral tradition, and passing techniques down over and over, we don't have a lot on their historical uses. But we do know a few things. Grip. Hold them down by the end. This is one of those transitions that happened when they were no longer used for fighting regularly. The original purpose of these were to be concealed. It's a weapon that gives you almost 30 inches of reach in something that can be a little less than 12 inches when stowed. Holding them near the chain/rope takes away range and power, but it sure does make it look cool and flashy. And when you're not fighting with them, looking cool is more important than being effective. Also, that concealability comes at the sacrifice of striking power. A solid stick will transfer more energy into your target. (That's right internet ninjas, they are less effective than a non-flail weapon.) We know this from inference from a similar weapon in Thailand, the tabok-toyok. It's a trade, effectiveness for concealablity. Speaking of Ninjas... the nunchaku were never a Ninja weapon. They're Okinawan. They were not rice flails, they were purpose built weapons. This misinformation comes from European historians. Its true that in Europe, peasants and farmers used barley flails as improvised weapons, and so historians assumed the same must have happened in Japan/Okinawa. But we don't have any evidence of this. But all of this begs the question: how were they actually used? Are the Kobudo kata accurate representations of the technique used? I don't think so. Just like how we've seen karate move farther and farther from its old form, the same has happened to kobudo. Before karate had belt ranks (thanks, Judo), the best fighters were known because they won the most fights. So even when it was no longer a skill used to protect your life (or end someone else's), it was still a combat sport that was pressure tested in competition. That's harder to do with weapons bases systems for obvious safety reasons. So weapon systems lose their effectiveness faster than unarmed systems. We can see the decline in combat effectiveness of karate in the last 80-100 years. We literally saw it happen. And weapon systems fall farther, faster. So if we were purely interested in learning to use them effectively in a fight, we would probably have better luck building a new system based on pressure testing, sparring, and generally fighting each other (in safe ways) than we would be trying to uncover the actual historical uses (don't @ me Jesse Enkamp). There is still value in trying to find the historical context, but it's simply not the fastest way to being able to use nunchucks well, given how much we don't know and how much has been lost over the years.

Waaaay too long for a yt comment... But totally worth it!!! Just one thing, full contact stick fighting. With some to no protective gear, and thinner more flexible weapons, still happens. I think the test is flawed because people aren't just floppy when getting hit, they are usually bracing themselves. It's like an axe can't cut down a thin sappling as it can bend and move back but get it on to a small tree that is solid and won't bend you can destroy it with 1-3 blows. It's like it's easier to break something held in position with a with than tossing it back and forward. But why use these weapons anyway? To be part of a TV show contrived racially diverse gang? This is an honest question as I was taught to fight with firearms and knives in the military. Even in close quarters, like check points, you just use a pistol instead of a carbine or rifle. The only reason I can think of is it's easier to DIY these types of weapons? It's impressive to watch the people with skills use them, but knowing that in fights other than type on type, a guy with either of these stands little chance against someone with a $150 pistol (unless they have the element of surprise, but even then a knife is better) is going to win unless the guy with the pistol does something wrong makes these weapons legacy and only have users of them still due to cool, chereographed movies....

As a practitioner of okinawan karate i have to point out a few things, first, the original nunchaku are square, octagonal or the weird horse bridle shaped ones as supposedly imported from china, the other thing is they never used chains, but braided horsehair, when you strike anything with the chain swivel types especially the round ones they tend to roll across the surface of what you are hitting, the octagonal ones or square ones the edges concentrate the striking force, when striking with them you aren't so much "clubbing" them as cutting and dragging the nunchaku across the target, usually held with about an inch sticking out of the bottom, but you do change up your grip depending on what you are trying to do there are speculations that the nunchaku was used much like the western morning star to wrap around the edges of shields or other weapon used to block them, and the shield and spear (or short sword) was a very specific combo used almost exclusively by the okinawan karate practitioners. Personally while nunchaku were effective for the time they were used i have always considered them as more for training or dueling purposes, i will say that the traditional okinawan wooden weapons like the nunchaku may have been hardened in an artificial fossilization practice, this would make them much harder and heavier, scientists have proven that on okinawa it could have been done in certain volcanic hotsprings, they would have been made in several rotating batches over the period of a few months to several years.

@Not Me the only way they could add to the knockout factor is by adding kinetic force to your punch, which they technically do by adding mass, but it's such a small mass that it doesn't make much difference. of course the point of knuckle dusters isn't anything to do with knockout potential. they have 2 basic functions, 1 protection of the knuckles and redirection of force into the palm and 2 concentration of force over a smaller area thereby increasing the potential to crack bones and potentially cause internal bleeding.

I need to get another pair and start whacking my elbows again. Memories! The only ones that I would be completely comfortable defending my life with are the wooden, octagonal, bone breakers ones that I grew up with. They have the impact needed to end a fight instantly. Just one clear observation. You do not have a clue about weapons. I see that you have at least used a pair of chucks, but you have no idea how to put power and speed into them to end a fight quickly. This comes from someone who does. If you learn how to use them correctly and with a few months of dedicated practice, you can become pretty dangerous with either of those tools. Cheers!

Best tip is hand placement you hold on at the midpoint on the nunchaku. Best of control and power generation. You only hold than high near the chain for twirling and tricks. Knuckles I love hem. Used many times. First hold them how ever is comfortable for you and make sure they fit.too big or small they hurt. 2nd you never throw haymakers. Only drunk idiots do that. Basic boxing skills and knuckles and you can stop anyone no matter how big they are. Jab and aim for the nose face and jaw. Never the temple you will kill them too easily. Though I think the test was flawed, I think it’s the best attempt at this sort of test I’ve seen so far. Way to go. I don’t think I would have thought of it. Here are my thoughts (and by the way, I’m not trying to justify the nunchuck as a self defense weapon-I think they’re silly). I’ve seen those sorts of ballistics gel dummies used for testing blades and firearms, which is what I think they are mostly designed for. Because the ratio of force to impact surface area is extremely high for blades and bullets, the structure of the soft tissues, as well as the tensed/untensed state of the muscles, are more or less irrelevant, and so they are modeled by a uniformly dense layer of gel whose density is supposedly similar to the average density of the soft tissues. But this ratio is much higher for a blunt force weapon, so the force of impact is spread out across a larger region of the body. In this case it’s reasonable to think that the internal structure of the soft tissues and the state of muscle tension could affect the appropriateness of the model, and I think this is why you got the results you did. First, the joints are surrounded by cartilage, muscles and tendons which help hold them together (not true for the dummy). A bullet doesn’t care about this, but what is essentially a glorified club probably does. Also, we know that a human body with tensed muscles can break its bones over a relatively mild tumble, whereas a limp body can survive a significantly higher fall with skeleton intact. An opponent blocking your strikes will have tensed muscles, and the way you braced the limb in your video was not sufficient to simulate that. Still, though, great attempt. And nunchucks are still silly.

@brianhsly
@brianhsly 3 жыл бұрын
@@tanvir6267 I used to punch concrete back then to condition my knuckles. I've since learned that was really bad advice. I have wrist problems now in my striking wrist, despite using proper technique to punch. The Ulnar nerve in the fist is actually a major nerve, that runs all the way from the palm of the hand to the neck. Damage to that area can include Ulnar Nerve lesions (Which can cause A LOT of problems.), fractured Epicondyles, and the potential to end up with cartilage fragments floating around. Cement was too hard to be punching, even though I worked up to it. If you strike one material, against another material with enough force, one of them is going to break. No matter how much bone density I achieved, I was never going to be able to make the calcium minerals in my fists more resistant than the solid concrete I was punching. Hardening your fists on materials that are harder than them is risky, and inadvisable. The Brass knuckles were on a different level entirely. They spread out my fingers, which prevented them from being about to disperse the shock between them as well, and send the shock deep into my hand through the palm, instead of through the knuckle. I'm not saying that conditioning one's fists to use brass knuckles is impossible, but the metal is much harder than concrete, and certainly stronger than your fist. The inner part of the hand that absorbs the force of the punch has less cushion to protect parts of the hand that are more fragile. Parts that are very important to hand function, and the hand isn't designed to take the brunt of the force into your palm. Those factors combined make it very risky, and dangerous, with a high probability of injury. Perhaps not right away, (though that is ABSOLUTELY possible) but the damage can be cumulative with frequent repetition (something required to condition the body) and can often cause symptoms you wouldn't even think to associate with brass knuckle training, such as shoulder or elbow issues, or even, VERY rarely, optical damage from the shock of the blows causing retina attachment issues. You absolutely CAN condition to use brass knuckles, but you should also absolutely use care. Just punching things willy nilly, without using proper form, technique, and body awareness can cause serious symptoms that will not go away with age. I just decided that I used my hands so much, for so many skills, that I didn't want to take the risk. To each their own though.

Two weapons which bring a lot more power is the escrima stick or a bo staff. The escrima stick is a stick about 2.5 to 3 foot long which you hold with one hand about 3-4~ inches from one side, if you need a second hand it should be for blocking attacks with it. The bo Staff is a really tall staff most I have seen are lighter for quicker attacks but I prefer a heavier one where I can still have speed and power and control it all. With these two things I am 85%~ sure I can break bones. Again thats with years of experience with these weapons

I would prefer nunchucks over brass knuckles any day. I've been using them for about 40yrs now and have attained a high level of knowledge and skill. I do admit that they require time and diligent practice in order to be really good to where you're confident in using them for defense. The reach advantage and ability to strike from angles abruptly and without notice are key features.

Suggestion. Use the knuckle dusters on your stronghand and box southpaw. Learn to throw an overhand check hook, and a front uppercut. Don't throw it with power, throw it with precision. The hardened mass is the power. As you found hitting their hand is effective too. Take their hands out of the fight and most people have no fight left. Theyre also easy to get and conceal easy in your belt line. I grew up shitty and I still fight with my right hand forward out of habit. Theyre not going to break an arm but in the hands of even a modestly skilled boxer these things will put you to sleep quick. I also fuck with nunchaku but mostly as a gag because it looks cool.

To the best of my understanding, you use knuckle dusters to cover just below the main finger joint, so the base of the tool is propped against your palm. From what I gather, you don't need to swipe with them (or kinda slap), but you can. I use a normal straight punch (just with a tighter clench on the fist), and it hurts my hands a little bit if I really unload, but not nearly as much as it would hurt someone on the receiving end. If anyone else has a cool technique they use, I'd be curious to learn- there seems to be a thousand answers on the internet haha

Ok, several things. 1. For a good reference on nunchaku technique look up "Shihan Nishiuchi"; there are several videos of him on YT. 2. You are using the wrong kind of nunchaku. When you watch master Nishiuchi's videos you'll see that he uses a pair that a) is connected with a string; the weight of the chain shifts the weight towards the middle, whereas you want it at the ends b) is more strongly tapered towards the string for better weight distribution to get a stronger impact c) has an octagonal cross-section for better grip and more concentration of force due to the ridges. d) is probably a heavier/harder wood than the mall ninja version and they're not lacquered = better grip e) the string is giving more control than the chain as it is shorter and less jiggly (doesn't have a ballbearing that lets the handles rotate freely on impact, losing energy/impact) 4. I don't understand how you can expect great results without instruction or training. How many hours of training does a total newbie need before he can throw a decent punch to rock somebody's world? Same goes for any weapon in general and for flexible weapons in particular as they are the hardest melee weapons to master. Having hand to hand skills (footwork, hip engagement, body mechanics) is helpful, but it's by far not all there is to using weapons. You realized it yourself when you said you were losing control when gripping them properly. This is where training comes in - You'll learn to control them in the proper grip with practice, but you can't expect to be able to do so after the first few swings. 5. When even you as a beginner can crack a flying coconut this should give you some indication as to what is possible. The dummy test trying to break the arm was a bit misleading, because you would not try to hit the middle of the arm where you have a lot of muscle cushioning the impact, you'd go for areas where the bone is exposed: elbow, knee, clavicle, head etc. Have your partner slap you in the wrist with a lazy blow (but with follow-through) and see if you'd want a full swing. 6. The "one and done" aspect is relevant for nunchaku as this is a prime tenet of Okinawa Kobujutsu, but again, it is not all. Advanced fighters can swing to create space, use feints etc to manage distance. There are also a lot of close-quarters techniques like poking the thin ends (where the string is attached) into the face/eyes, the butt end can be used for hammer-fist strikes. Then there's trapping and sqeezing wrists or even choke holds. The nunchaku handles can also be used to block/parry attacks (another reason to hold them at the end, not toward the string). 7. In every serious test you need a control - compare your results to a baseball bat or a collapsible baton. You'll see how much force/weight you can generate with a nunchaku. The physics of the whiplash effect are at work when you handle them well.

Here in texas knuckles were legalized a few years back but personally iv always carried them since i was a teen. The trick is to find some that fit you perfectly, its sort of like finding a hat that fits. Some will work for most people but some wont. Unlike hats however, you cant simply change how they fit. If you find the right kind , they are quite devastating.

There's no doubt in my mind that nunchucks can break bones. They mau be a little less optimal then some other chain weapons, but they can do damage. The main issue in my mind as well as others I've talked to is, accidentally hitting yourself, and having it bounce off and something and hitting you. Tbh if you're going to get a weapon to enforce serious damage on someone, there are just soooo many better ones as much as I love nunchucks. Also from what I've seen in the video, getting a perfect hit on somebody in motion is harder than it seems.

Good video! I dont know about brass knuckles because I've never used one. But yes, it seem like unrealistic super powers have been attributed to the nunchaku which I do have experience with. I hold them up like you near the top. Try following through with a spin in the same direction as the blow after the impact to stabilize the nunchaku. It will not give you added "bone breaking" power, but it helps keep it under control and not bouncing back at you.
