I think that this is how embroidery and especially hardanger will continue and not die out. When i started there was one kit at hobby lobby and now nothing. Of course that was in the early 90's. Looking forward to more videos as you have time :)

You are just a delight! I have not had a chance to watch all the videos but will do so soon! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge!

I couldn’t even consider doing Hardanger without my magnifying light which is attached by a clamp to my small lap table. For the accuracy needed it is my most essential accessory.

How do l get northern needles catalog so l can order my glasses and other things

Becky Saunders is correct, you are a delight! Just thought I'd mention, I go the "cheap" route (my eyes sound just like yours, I can see REALLY WELL if the item is about 6-8" from my face. LOL. I have bifocals, and then I put a pair of reading glasses I get from the Dollar Store for $1.00 over them, this works great for me and I can have LOTS lying around, in all my work areas, in my going-out bag, etc. :)

Hi Carol! I chuckled at your "cheap" glasses route. That's exactly what I did too! I hope you do get inspired to get back into hardanger. It is a lovely technique. My accent is mostly Canadian, but I may have a bit of mid west leftover from when I was young. I was born in Germany and the only english I heard and spoke was with my family who where originally from Michigan. Thank you for the lighting suggestions. I already have an idea where the floor lamp will come in handy! Thank you so much for your kind words! Let me know if you do stitch some hardanger!

I watched several of your videos yesterday as I could. I left another message or 2 on another one, because you just had me laughing out loud, we are sooo much alike. Especially the "must get more, love these, what if they quit making them!" That is so me I just can't stand it. Hahaha! I am thinking I will try and figure out what I have and what I need and perhaps start the HAL and work it on Sundays. I try to take one day a week and just rest and do what I want at least part of the day. Thanks so much for that HAL, it will really help me out to get going. :D

I first attempted hardanger about 5 years ago with disastrous results. It was a bookmark with horrid directions, and I didn't know flosstube existed at the time. Then someone recently gifted me Cindy Valentine's My Sweet Heart...it was such a beautiful design I decided to try it again. Unfortunately I've found written hardanger instructions to be impossible to understand, but thank goodness helpful videos like yours are available now. I just did the cut work tonight on the heart piece and mistakenly clipped two threads...I nearly cried thinking I'd ruined the piece. In one of your videos though you said it "wasn't a disaster if the wrong thread was clipped," which made me think it might be fixable. After reading an article online I managed to weave in threads to fix the problem, and now I'm good to go. The next step: Maltese crosses. Don't suppose you'd do a video on those?

I'm so glad you were able to fix the cut threads. As for the Maltese crosses - I think another name for this is Greek cross or Adjoining wrap (if I'm thinking of the same thing in your pattern). I hope to do videos in the future on these more specialized stitches, however in the meantime here's a couple of links that may help: www.nordicneedle.net/2010/04/22/adjoining-wrap/ Also Tania Myneedle has a short video up showing this (no talking though). She is wrapping her bars but you can wrap or weave them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4K1kHyJqZV3oc0 And one more - Victoria Sampler has stitch animations. Find (in the drop down box) "Hardanger - Wrapped Bars Partial Greek x". www.victoriasampler.com/StitchAnimations/Default.aspx Hope all this helps!

Thank you so much for your help! I did not know the alternative names for Maltese cross, but I watched the videos and they are all definitely the same kind of stitch. I've loved doing this hardanger heart but it HAS been a struggle and I made some rookie mistakes. I'm attempting it on the suggested 32 count belfast linen fabric...the count is way too freaking tiny for my middle aged eyes and it has a huge amount of slubs in it. Your tutorials talk about 22ct evenweave fabric, which would have been much better for me. I also chose threads too similar to the fabric color (it's violet threads on violet fabric) so I can't see what I'm doing very well. If only I had seen your tutorials before I started this thing! I think my next piece will go better now that I know what I'm doing a little more. Thanks again for your videos and helpful tips.

Do you post to Instagram? If so, I would love to follow you. I have bifocals as well, so the magnifiers are a must. Good tip! Thinking of taking a look at Nordic Needle, tonight.

+53CraftyLady I do have an instagram account, but I've not posted yet. I can not post from my computer and that's where all my photos are. I may post in the future, once I've figured out how to do it! (I don't have a cell phone, I just use my camera and download to my Mac). But if you want to subscribe to me on instagram (in case I do get going), I'm under stitchingwithasmile. I've been ordering from Nordic Needle since the 1980's and they've always been very helpful if I'd had questions. I would say that Nordic Needle were/are instrumental in promoting hardanger embroidery in North America. Have fun checking out their website!
