Some fabric/thread suggestions:
Hardanger 22 count or Lugana 25 count fabric with #5 Pearl Cotton (kloster blocks, blanket stitches, satin stitches) and #8 Pearl Cotton (cable stitch, eyelets, woven bars, picots, doves eyes). In place of the #5 Pearl Cotton you can use Caron Watercolours or Valdani #5 Pearl Cotton.
Suggested amount of thread: DMC #5 pearl cotton 1-2 skeins or Watercolours - 2-3 skeins. #8 pearl cotton - 1 ball. If using Valdani #5 - 2 balls.
If you are choosing another fabric count and have questions, please feel free to leave a message and I’ll do my best to answer.
Needle suggestions:
If using 22 count Hardanger or 25 count Lugana with #5 Pearl Cotton (or equivalent), use a size 22 tapestry needle. When using the #8 Pearl Cotton, use a size 24 tapestry needle.

Thank you for the lovely video, it was really informative! I like working Hardanger on 28 and 32 ct linen...the last project I did I used coton a broder for the needle weaving if I remember correctly. I like it better than floss. I am looking forward to watching the doily progress...I don`t know if I will join in, but it will be fun to watch!! xo

Do I split every thread either the ball or skein when I want to stitch a block please?
@stitchingwithasmile677
@stitchingwithasmile677 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the thread. As a general rule, the thread that comes on a ball (i.e. DMC Pearl Cotton) is not split. If it comes in a skein, this is where it depends on the thread. Much of the DMC Pearl Cotton has been converted to skein form, and this is not split. However the Caron Watercolours is split into three strands, one strand equals approx Pearl Cotton #5. But the Caron Wildflowers is single strand already, so no splitting. Hope that helps!

Let's see if I can help (I hope so!). You will need to look at your chart and determine the total number of threads needed to make the piece. Sometimes the chart will say, but sometimes not. If the chart gives number of threads, for example 250 x 100, and if you use 22 count fabric the design size will be 11.4 inches (250 divided by 22) x 4.5 inches(100 divided by 22). If the chart does not give the number of threads used, then you will have to count out and work out the number. Always add extra inches on all four sides (3 to 4 inches). And if unsure err on the larger size! I hope this helps, good luck!

I hope I've understood your question. The size of fabric is usually based on threads per inch. For instance, Hardanger fabric is a 22 count fabric. This means that there are 22 threads vertically and horizontally in each inch. Luganga comes in various counts, one example is 25 count which means 25 threads per inch vertically and 25 threads per inch horizontally. Hope this helps.

My fabric and threads for the HAL arrived on Friday so I'm excited to start. I'm using dmc avocado greens on 22 count ivory. I have a kit (that I've set aside for now) that has some beautiful Valdani perle cotton with it but I'm finding that the thread seems to be fraying. I'm using approx 18" lengths to stitch with and I've tried switching needles in case the eye had a burr. Have you had this happen?
@stitchingwithasmile677
@stitchingwithasmile677 7 жыл бұрын
I've only just gotten my Valdani thread, so have not tried stitching with it yet. When you thread your needle from the ball of Valdani thread your needle first before your cut your length. Years ago I had heard this with DMC pearl cotton balls because it supposedly frays less. It has to do with the way the thread is spun. If that doesn't work, try the other way. I'll have to try out the Valdani to see how it works. I really like green with ivory, have done several pieces this way.

Hi again Kathleen. I've been giving this some thought. Are you using a size 22 tapestry needle? If not, give this a try. Or perhaps even a larger needle, size 20. I'm glad you mentioned this as others may have this issue too. So I decided to upload a video with some suggestions. Hope you don't mind but I mentioned your name (first name only). Thanks for bringing this up!
