The fact that you took the books off your shelves and put them off for each category is DEDICATION

I never thought of organizing my bookshelves like a book store. I love the way that looks.

I need to get more baskets lol. I use baskets for my mass markets and novellas. I've been flipping them backwards for years as I read them. You have my favorite shelves, they are goals lol.

We love categories. Maybe not traditional genres, but we do love categories. I also love to decorate in the theme of each category/genre. For small books that are in a series (think Series of Unfortunate Events), we stack those. Outside of that, it’s totally an aesthetic arrangement. For our kids’ books, it’s exactly like you said. Bottom shelves belong to the kiddos. Within that, we try to keep chapter books together, picture books, larger bedtime-esque books, etc., in their own spots. Within the chapter books, we do have more division: graphic novels, Greek mythology (yes, we have enough to need it’s own section lol), educational/non-fiction, and any large collection (Minecraft, Dav Pilkey books, HP) together.

Yes! I never understood why people hate on non traditional or aesthetic organization. "Real readers know their shelves" I had mine backwards for years and in the end all my friends thought it was fun because it was a game 🙄 but lol. They'd pic a book at random and make me guess the book. Not only do I know where my books are, I know how the pages look so... why not be backwards 🤷♀️. They're different now but I did convert a few people.

Realising I've done all of these at one point or another... I know backwards books are controversial, but it really helped me get through my tbr/get excited about books that have been on my shelves for a while - you get so used to seeing things that you don't really notice them anymore so 'hiding' them was refreshing. Had a TBR section and I'd randomly pick from it if I was having a hard time deciding and it was really fun 😊

*so* many good ideas!!! I'm starting to run out of space on my read shelves and stacking them vertically is something I've done out of desperation (when I had a lot less shelves) rather than for aesthetics. I might have to have a play around with this on my shelves now!

Okay last comment I promise. I currently have my main bookshelf organized as read/unread rainbow. The only spines visible to me are the books that I have not read. They are in rainbow because I noticed I remember and find my books easier that way. My wall shelf above my closet is favorites rainbow, which is books that I read and LOVE in a rainbow with the book's spine or cover visible to me. It's nice looking over and being like "wow, look at that rainbow and oh my goodness what a good book."

I don't think I could change up the way I organize my books, I like how they are split up too much. I have five categories: my four favorite authors get their own section, then I have stand alones, series where I own all the books, series where I don't own all the books, and finally everything else. Within the everything else I break it down further into stuff like poetry, nonfiction, classics, books on writing, etc. but they all go on the same shelves with each other.

So weird but cool...for my needs my rainbow shelves ended up being white into red to orange to yellow to pink to purple to blue to green to brown to black. The way my spines were it just worked and you wouldn't be able to picture that looking good but I promise it was beautiful
