To HardBoiledDetective: I have spent the last two days watching your excellent Sherlock Holmes collection. Today I thought I'd check out my Netflix possibilities. After watching...and deleting...more than one movie, I am back. This is quality worth my time.

Basil rathbone got the worst of the flats. Even this one occupied by the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes is comfortable and has light and is not as cluttered and disheveled

At 6:06, that is not Jeremy Brett's hand writing the note as they had a hand double for Jeremy who was left-handed. Hmm! Things are not always what they appear, Sherlock lol www.imdb.com/name/nm0107950/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

To me, the shocking aspect of this episode is how annoyed Watson is with Sherlock. Very out of character, even for Hardwicke's usual performances. Watson usually is thrilled about a new case.
@mfjdv20209 жыл бұрын
Anacell Castillo Probably Watson was annoyed at being called out at an inconvenient time? And for a matter which at first sight must have appeared remarkably trivial.

Man, there are some coldhearted men in these videos. They didn't give a crap about their women. If my woman said she heard a threatening noise, I'd be ready to hunt for the source with club and gun. I'd expect no less from any so-called "man."

then again, milder cases of mental illness, eccentricity and sleep paralysis were kinda lumped intogether and hearing someone living in a tall building seeing a man outside and then fainting might be looked as "an episode of something". Particularly if a person is a sensitive and frail.

Edith is actually very proactive about having Jack believe her. I like this about her, considering her father was a terrible husband to be.

Although one of ACDs best stories this adaptation is not up to par. Why does Watson seem like he wants to punch SH in the face? Out of character. Then there's the ape suit.They could have done a better job than that. It just looks silly. Glad no other ep contained such ridiculous looking props/wardrobe. Were there new writers for this one? Regardless of a poorly portrayed gorilla and a rage filled Watson Brett is still the best SH in my opinion.

BTW, Watson is p.o'ed because he no longer lives at Baker St. He lives with his wife the former Mary Morstan. He works full time in his surgery to support them and Holmes lives in his rooms alone.

I love this cast but there's no denying that this attempt at science fiction is one of the weakest of the canon. There were other, better stories that never made it, like The Missing Three-Quarter, The Five Orange Pips, and The Reigate Squires. But Granada's final run of scripts were problematic, like hugely inflating The Sussex Vampire into a gothic horror feature instead of the touching human vignette that it was on paper.

@@AnthropoidOne The only issue with Golden Pince-Nez was the absence of Watson, thanks to scheduling issues when Edward Hardwicke was filming Shadowlands. Otherwise, beautiful direction and sensitive performances. Really, the visual aspects in that episode cannot be beat. I'd have rather had Watson than Mycroft, but I doubt the substitution would have been made if they'd had much of a choice at the time.

This is one of the most interesting stories of Doyle. So relevant even to we today who live in a world where we try to overcome ageing and try with all our might to prolong or restore the vitality of youth.
