Such a great series, this Holmes and Watson are one of the best portrayals.

The giggling and fluffily dressed young ladies do rather give the perfect backdrop to something quite sinister. Excellent Acting. Excellent period portrayal.

The moral of this story is if you do anything bad you can always get caught. So don't do anything bad

It is sad that this is the last we see of Lestrade. The parting he had with Holmes and Watson was too bitter and depressing.

Robert Hardy is the definitive Charles Augustus Milverton giving a superb "snakelike " performance as the master blackmailer

I second that. A mesmerising performance, elevating the story. One of Holmes's very best foes.

The 'master' bIackmailer underestimated the resolve of his intended victim if, instead of paying, he would rather shoot himself. 5:56 makes me smile :)

The problem with that is, as Milverton says: "There you make a mistake, Mr Holmes. An exposure would profit me indirectly to a considerable extent. I have eight or ten similar cases maturing. If it was circulated among them that I had made a severe example of the Lady Eva I should find all of them much more open to reason. You see my point?"

Haaaaaaa....or sent to prison for an affront against His Majesty for crimes on the High Seas---for being a Booty Pirate.

@AmericanGirl: so what if he was? But take a look at the horrible society he lived in. That poor colonel shot himself because of the disgusting attitudes in Victorian Britain. If he'd had the luck to live in western Europe nowadays, he could have settled down happily living with his male partner instead of being more or less forced to marry Charlotte, who is equally to be pitied.

Mairwen 99 Oh, yeah, sure, their society was just _so_ disgusting and horrible. And I suppose you'd know, having lived in it? No? Didn't think so.

Thank you for that. Men who loved men were hung at that time or thrown into prison and destroyed like the great Oscar Wilde.

Two wrongs don't make a right. He still had no right to hurt the poor girl.
