So glad I found this review. I have been riding around on my 15 year old £300 Trek SU100 hybrid and decided to upgrade, so I'just bought my first road bike. I didn't want to go too cheap and risk wanting to change too quickly, but also not 100% sure my 57 yr old body will take to the lower riding position of a road bike. However, it didn't take much research to realise you can't actually buy a bike at the moment due to worldwide insanity. Yesterday I found myself at Decathlon and was fortunate enough to find a really helpful biking assistant who listened to my situation and immediately recommended the 105 version of this bike. 1999€ or £1700 (I'm in Spain) which was pretty much what I wanted to spend. I get it in 10 days and cannot wait. The nice part is the 'no questions' 60 day return for refund policy they have, so no risk. To see Ollie singing its praises, makes me feel a little more confident and excited about my purchase. I'm hoping I'll notice a real difference from my 14kg Trek 🤞🏻🙏🏻
@Justin-zv4cm3 жыл бұрын
I'd opt for the 105 myself. The folks that look at bikes of this caliber in this price range likely aren't going to be able to notice the subtle differences between 105 and Ultegra, as the higher tier riders that would actually notice difference in shifting and groupset weight usually have higher tier price ranges. Also, the extra $1,000 (US) could fund LOTS of cafe rides.

the only diff is weight not performance

@@MrKSRO Exactly, and the weight difference isn't really that much at all. Also, I've found the 105 group set to be more durable and less finicky. I have Ultegra on my bike, but I switched the front derailleur to 105 because the Ultegra needed constant adjustment.

I have the rim model. The frame is stiff and compliant. Although it say EDR Endurance it is quite a racy geometry with only a 138mm head tube and 551mm stack in a size medium - I have still not had any aches after 60 mile rides though. The Ultegra gears shift seamlessly on the cassette and compact (no dropped chains). The Fulcrum wheels are semi aero 35mm deep and roll well (the wheel set alone is well over £300 bought separately). Not really seen any reason to upgrade the seat post and saddle though if you are a weight weeny you could save a hundred grams or so by upgrading these. All in all a good all round bike for short blasts or longer days in the saddle.

#askgcntech Great show guys. I recently changed my hood covers on both my Ultegra Di2 and Ultegra mechanical shifters. However after the change the new ones seem to be a bit saggy and don't fit on the sfters as well as the first ones did. What am I doing wrong? Would love to send you a picture for you to get a better understanding of the problem. Thanks a bunch.

Use alcohol on the hoods and shifters when mounting to ease the process. There is a GCN video about that too.
@dawitsolomon38473 жыл бұрын
@Paulo Neves I have done just that when installing but it still turned out saggy. Would not have been to insert it without the alcohol.

It was great to see a cheap bike, but I still miss Jons bike builds, and feel slightly sad when I see the rebuilt frame cannibalized for decor on the tech show wall.

I want one! I tried to buy one but " not in stock" PS. I will be notified when in stock.

A giant propel disc is £2600. Low end canyons are less that that too. I really don’t think this bike is particularly good value. I think you should review the entry level road bikes such as the trek domane al with Claris and the specialised allez etc. Those are the bikes which most people ride, and expensive bikes just aren’t necessary 99% of the time

Not related to this video much- but are there videos available that would show how to best put 650b wheels on a 700c road bike setup? My concern is the uneven wearing of the chain, rear cassette, etc.
@krisjones743 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any videos. Drivetrain wear won't be affected by wheel size. Or do you mean when switching between wheels?
@jochenkraus70162 жыл бұрын
If you're concerned about wear of chain and cassette or need different lengths due to different cassettes: I think there are chain links that you can open and close several times. On my touring bike I even have a Connex chain that you can open without tools. Idk how well 650B fits in frames that aren't specified for it. If you can't put much wider tires in, the diameter is smaller. On the other hand that might give you more space to add mudguards.

I had a Giant Defy with full 105 group set for £999, this is double and more. Plus it's just a rebranded BTWIN bike called Van Rrysel. A marketing technique to make it sound 'oooo ahhhh' but basically it's the name of the origins town. It's like bringing a bike out called Stoke on Trent
@marks36203 жыл бұрын
Giant are an excellent brand and my dad has an Escape which is a good bike. A bike that is designed on the cobbles in the cycling mecca of Flanders has a bit more pedigree than a bike from Stoke would have though (that’s more famous for pottery).

Nice bike but couldn't handle those gear ratios ( being old and living in the Peak District). Still hankering after an Aethos with 12 speed Rival!

Feel free to recommend another sub 7.5kg bike with electronic shifting and wide range gearing for under £4.5k. Oh... and no fugly dropped stays .... then I can add that to the wish list and carry on riding my current 9.5kg bike.

I don't like the Tribans because they have externally routed cables as well as quick release axles. Not the most ideal if you are running discs.
@HCMORGI3 жыл бұрын
also lower end decathlon bikes (also triban) have horrible bottom brackets and super cheap parts that aren't branded like cassettes, chains and so on. they will need replacement after a few hundred kilometres. worked there as a bike mechanic and basically all bikes up to the mid level broke down as soon as they were actually used, pretty much marketed to people who buy and dont use. higher end is okay but you need to be lucky with your mechanic who set up the bike if you can't do that yourself as they don't get or need training when hired
@kedarkulkarni30303 жыл бұрын
@@Stoney3K yeah that is a point.. but you can run full outer cables for the cable problem...also you get 105...so😅😅
