Awesome video !! I'm 51 and still learning. I would like to tell something that someone told me when I was 17 years old. IV never forgotten it word for word. He said, " turn the heat down a little and hold a longer arc to blow back the slag so you can see the two pools/puddles, ( the slag pool and the steel pool ). The longer arc is hotter than a short arc, that's why you might need to turn the heat down. I have told that to many people and it has always made a difference. Thanks to my ex- father-in-law for telling me that way back then. I think of him every time I tell someone. Thank you so much Terry Bryant from Colton CA.

Austin,as an old guy now,mentally that's hard because I'm watching pipeline video's,so many video's bring back memories.When you brought up top and bottom went back to my first day,I had to do a 16 by myself,along with an old fitter,I don't know if the union still dispatches plumbers as fitters,but they did at one time,the only thing he did was help with the clamp and hand me rod,I was so anal about grinding I have to do it myself.That weld was fine,but the next day I had a very good main line welder who was going to partner with me, said I was fine on the side I was on,got ready at he just looked at me waiting for me to do something,I had to fess up and tell him I wasn't sure what to do,he was twice my age,he put his stinger down his hands together,forearms on the pipe and said,,when I have my pancake down I don't give a F what you do,if you f it up it's your ass.He started on his bead and yelled,get your ass going!We finished the fill,he told me to start my cap first because I was so damn slow,I heard his helper touch up my start,at the bottom he was watching me telling me to keep going,I stopped and he tied it in.Cleaned it,he looked at it,said why are sweating! I watched him tied in the bottom and said I have a lot to learn,our heats wern't even close.He was very cool,I learned a lot that day.

Hey Austin, I’m 16 and I love welding. Do it everyday and my class and it’s all I look forward too. What do I have to do do get a job right out of high school? Where do I start to find a job as a helper. When I get a job what do I need for the job? I’d appreciate any help you can give me. Also I’m hoping to see a video on how everything happens. From you getting the job to the operators putting the pipe in place to the end of the job. Thanks again!

Jack Pattison Jack my wife and i have a “New To Pipeline” series on our channel. Its called Austin and Kayla. It’s in the play list. There is a couple of videos that would help you there. But one thing you can do right out of high school is get a job doing any kind of welding. Or any position around welding on a construction job. Ask questions and learn all you can about reading a tape, squaring things, the way metal draws when you weld it. Just anything you can. Put yourself in the path of a welding job. One thing will lead to another and you will end up where you want to be. But any kind of welding experience will help you. Be patient. I love your ambition. Reminds me of me when i was your age. Be safe.

Have you ever welded on magnetized pipe? I spent a few months in Colorado and Nebraska being a helper. We were repairing pipe from the 50s and it was all magnetic

RockyMountainAdventures Ya we run into it even on new pipe
@mauserhouser
@mauserhouser 6 жыл бұрын
a lot of times on magnetized pipe it helps to run DC positive ground. when i was an oilfield welder back in the old days we got stuck using a ton of old drill pipe and tubing to make pipe racks etc. and some of the pipe was terribly magnetized.
@kellypenrod2979
@kellypenrod2979 5 жыл бұрын
It also helps to take your ground and wrap it around the pipe about 6in to a foot from where you are welding, just pull about4ft extra and wind a loose coil around the pipe. was shown this by an old head many years ago, it does help quite a bit! Stay safe out there brother!

Hey, Austin I have a question.. would it be possible to rig out on a half ton with just a SA 200 and bottles and welding lead.. just to start off and get by with a few weeks before I can get a 1 ton single cab dually ?

Austin Ross okay awesome man, yeah I have a half ton right now.. I wasn’t thinking all the way through, I should’ve gotten an older dually but I’ve learned my lesson now and I hope to get out there and walk the green mile, I really appreciated it god bless man
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Sixtos From what I have seen of American trucks here in Australia is that they are rated low on the carrying capacity and tow capacity when compared to Japanese brand (Jap or Thai built) trucks and utes. Spend a bit of time checking out the towbar ratings as you walk past different vehicles at your local Big Box store and you will see what I mean. If you are still worried about the weight then go through everything on the truck and justify it's place on board.

Hey man, I just graduated high school and I’m not sure about my future. I’ve thought about studying to be an auto mechanic while I was in high school. Now I’ve changed my mind and I’ve been looking into a future in welding. It’s something I can see myself doing for a living. I’m 18 now, and looking at a few trading schools that offer welding. I want to know what you think and if you’ve got any advice or anything you would like to tell me. Is it too late for me to get into welding? What are some physical requirements? Anything I need to know or should know before making up my mind. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thanks. Also, keep up the great videos. You seem like a really cool guy, and you seem like a really dedicated hard worker. Thanks again and take care.

@bartbley1269
@bartbley1269 6 жыл бұрын
I have done it over 40+ years. I compartmentalized family and work . separate the two don't bring family to work and don't bring work home to family .Yes you will miss family . Put them in a box in your mind they will be safe there . If you don't think your family can be independent, pipeline is not for you . You may be surprised though most people can do quite well on there own . kids too They understand what you are doing for them . I'd also phone home every other day

Blake Dixon Blake, my wife normally travels with me, and that helps a tremendous amount. But when i do have to go out by myself, the worst part is her not being here. Even when she is here there is one thing that comes to mind thats hard to deal with. Deciding on what to go home for. Funerals, birthdays, graduations... its just not feasible to go home for every occasion. Some things are non negotiable. That’s one thing I have grown to love about this life style, it allows you to appreciate things a little more. Very humbling life style. Working away from home has taught me so much about life. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. With that being said, i am looking forward to slowing down one day. Being home way more often throughout the year. Thank you for the question. My wife and i have a channel if you are not familiar with it, it’s called Austin and Kayla. We talk a lot about this life style in vlogs and in our “New to Pipeline” series in our play list over there. Thanks again.
