I love watching Jack's reactions in this scene. He just fits the part so naturally, that it comes off he really is McMurphy, and not an actor.

"Harding" was played by William Redfield. He was actually diagnosed with terminal leukemia during the filming of 'Cuckoo's Nest', and went on to complete his role. He died 18 months later. Also, if you are a fan of the 'The Bob Newhart Show', you may recognize him as Howard's equally kooky and strange brother, "Gordon Borden" (in the episode 'Warden Gordon Borden'). It's a great episode, and if William Redfield hadn't died, I'm sure they would have had him back in a reprise of his role. Bill Daily and William Redfield looked a lot alike in the episode and were really convincing as funny, rival siblings. William also appeared in the pilot of "The Bob Newhart Show", as a neighbor, 'Arthur Hoover', but it wasn't much of a role and the show hadn't found its rhythm yet. But check-out the Bob Newhart episode. It's really funny.

Yeah, Redfield was diagnosed with a terminal illness (leukemia) just after they started filming the movie by the guy who played the doctor who interviews (talks to) Nicholson when he first arrives at the hospital. That guy really was a doctor. It was very sad. Redfield managed to play his part, anyway. He did it so masterfully, IMO. The role of Harding was a big factor that was key to the success of this movie. The patient who was sort of the leader of the patients because he followed the rules and his illness was not as severe as some of the others. Before McMurphy arrived Harding was the "leader"of the patients to an extent. You can tell by the way he speaks and how he gives a look at Ratchet when Taber interrupts him and curses like "here we go again, nurse Ratchet". He did not even seem to mind that McMurphy kind of took over the role as leader of the patients since it lifted a burden off of him. This is a great movie. Redfield played the role brilliantly. Redfield died less than a year after the movie was released. He was only 49 years old when he died. He really played that character wonderfully. He's got intelligence! "The position of one person to another. Form,...Content, ...Interrelationships, ...God,...Devil,...Hell, ...Heaven." Man was a genius. They just don't want to learn. LOL

its amazing to know that the whole second part of this entire scene was all Ad-Libbed. The actors went off course and rolled with it, and it expressions on Jack Nicholson's face show that he was just as surprised to what was going on around him

No movie now or then will ever stand up against this one. There is very little action or special effects to be had, except for the brilliant dialogue between the actors. I knew every one of them the first time I saw this movie, and I learn a little more about them every time I watch it again. An exceptional film.

There are few films where every scene is outstanding, has its' own personality differing from every other scene, drawing you in to care about characters good and evil. "The Godfather", "Cuckoo's Nest", "Goodfellas", "Silence of the Lambs", the first half of "Full Metal Jacket", are some.

William Redfield (Harding) was diagnosed with leukemia during the making of this film. He became seriousily ill during shooting and within a year of the release of One Flew over the Cuccoo's Nest he died, at the age of 49. Sydney Lassick (Cheswick) made a cameo appearance in an episode of the X-Files where he reprised the role of a placid mental patient, not unlike Cheswick.

That expression Nurse Ratched has at the end of this clip is actually really scary if you look at it for longer than a few seconds, the book talks about her being like a "well oiled machine" and in that final shot she really just looks like one of those realistic humanoid robots. Uncanny valley they call it, she looks almost human but not quite! Like a realistic mannequin or something!

For me, the loss of William Redfield is up there with the loss of John Cazale. An actor who could have truly made his mark on the history and form of acting for the screen had he been given the full career filled with powerful roles like Harding that he deserved.

Taber isn't even in the book, he is only mentioned of having lived on the ward. But he is in the whole movie. I have to read the book for school and I watched the movie before that. It's fun to see how they added and left out so many things in the movie that were or weren't in the book :)

That is correct, Taber never actually appears in the novel. The novel also went into detail about how Ratched actually had Dr. Spivey afraid of her, interesting little detail.

To echo another comment, the guy playing Harding was dying of cancer when he made this movie. If you notice in almost all the scenes he is in he is sitting down because he barely had the energy to move at this point. He actually died before the movie was released. It's sad that he never got to see the incredible success it had.

William Redfield aka "Harding" was a roommate of Marlon Brando's before Brando and/or Redfield were Famous or well known... when Brando's career starting slumping and he started to take what William Redfield thought were "easy roles just for the money" his friend Redfield was the ONLY friend to tell him "Marlon you're not an actor anymore, you're a 'moviestar' & just in it for the money..." Only this best of his friends & fellow actors did Brando ever listen too. Too bad he didn't live longer :(

@gravelandgrain100 I've just had an insight: Cheswick is the Cowardly Lion; Harding, the Tin Man; Billy Bibbit is the Scarecrow; McMurphy is Dorothy; Nurse Ratched is the Wicked Witch of the West (natch); The Chief represents the WW's body guards who turn on her, and the rest of the nuts are eihter a Munchkins or a Flying Monkey.
