Hardinge HLV-BK tailstock nut removal

Hardinge HLV-BK tailstock disassembly. In this step I show how to take out the nut for the lead screw. NOTE: You DON'T need a slide hammer.
Remove the 1/8' pipe thread plug from the center. Shove the spindle as far back as it will go with the lead screw removed. You may need to drive it back with a hammer and a block of wood or aluminum round stock if it's rusted up or too dirty.
Rotate it a little by turning it with the hand or a screwdriver in the slot if it's stiff and you'll feel it loosen up and will pull out easily. In the video I said to turn it and line it up with the screw, what I meant to say was that arrow I drew on there to illustrate about how much rotation is required.

That’s how I did it, after calling Hardinge to no avail, like you, I just figured it out. I had tried although very gingerly, using a slide hammer which is a BAD idea. I posted this video to hopefully keep others from ruining their tailstock.

I posted this video for a couple of reasons. First, there is very little information anywhere on the net about these older lathes and none at all on how to do what I just showed.Second, these are still good lathes but there are NO parts available for this model anymore from Hardinge . If this keeps someone that is going through a machine from busting this irreplaceable part then my mission is complete. The only way to get parts is from one that somebody is parting out.
