Babin Hardinge HLV-Siemens-828-Demo

This is the first one of its kind ever built. I will likely have it in my shop in 2 weeks. I already have the HLV with Centroid control. Very nice but this takes matters to a new level.

Hi Chris - I would really like to know if you could point me to how the two handwheels were integrated into the control. Does the 828 support multiple MPGs? How does this work? Where can I find the documentation explaining how this is done? Great choices all around btw - I have a 2008 HLV-EM in my garage I love dearly.

I've been looking at the Babin lathes with the Centroid control. Any idea on whether they plan to make this a regular option?

Awesome machine but I can't help the position of the controls and E-stop are poorly placed. I think it would be better if the control panel is relocated to where the keyboard is and a separate angled keyboard tray should mount under that.

I see couple other ergonomic issues, the whole position of the control panel below isn't great IMO (usually teach in lathes have it higher, where the carriage control is, not everything is there, just what you might need for basic operation), this guy doesn't look tall, and even he has to bend down and eye peripheral sight is very narrow in the upwards direction, so you lose sight of what is going on with the work, the chips also tend to fall in that direction, the forward/reverse could have been put behind the original spindle lever, where the feed engagement lever was and they seems to have blanked it off, so it is unused placement of the Z servo seems a bit odd, granted there is little load on these machines on the screw, but it is always best to put the drive element as close the place where majority of the work takes place to reduce the twist in the screw shaft under load, not that important because they use linear scales, but still

What's a point zero 1 micron?

1 micron (aka µm) is .001mm. So .01µm is .00001mm, 10 nanometers, or .0000039". This is the resolution of the scales. There is absolutely no way this machine is capable of hitting those tolerances (reasonably). Async spindle errors from angular contact bearings will be a magnitudeS higher. Lack of vibration isolation and environment thermal control doesn't help. Still, I don't doubt the machine is reliable to 5mircon or .0002".

A Siemens 828 on a 2 Axis Lathe ?? You must have more money than sense ?? Curious what something like cost compared to a Full CNC Lathe ?? With a Cabinet and Flood Coolant. I am only guessing you decided to use the 828 because someone gave it to you for free ?? Definitely a great looking machine. Only question is WHY ??

Your questions are a trite insulting but I will reply as it appears you don’t fully appreciate this machine. It is a special project that Siemens assisted BabinMachine with and I paid full price for the 828 obviously. It is one of the best lathe controls in the world and this unit is one of a kind. No different from buying a sports car. I used my “sense” to make money - i guess I can spend it anyway I wish.

@@ChrisHarris4U Hey Chris. Definitely agree with you about the Siemens controller being one of the best in the world. My comment of WHY ?? Was to do with the use of a 828 on a 2 Axis Lathe. The 828 is a Multi Axis Controller, way overkill for a retro fit on a 2 Axis machine. You say the right thing ? It's your money to do with what you want. IF you choice to share you ideas with others around the world via the use of KZbin be prepared for people who don't follow your ideas. Nothing to be Insulted about. What I do not expect or like is insulting commentary. You were asking fine questions about the 828 but implied that I was stupid. I do not believe that is part of what we should be like in life. I post videos to create more enjoyment and happiness, not ridicule. I have multiple 6-axis lathes with 828’s on them. I know what the control is all about. And I wanted the best control on an amazing tool room 2-axis lathe. Seems like a pretty brilliant idea to me. And I am enjoying it a lot more than my identical HLV machine with a Centroid control. I do not understand why that is a problem. I don’t look at cost when buying these machines as they are for enjoyment, not return on investment. Hope that helps.
