Fly Fishing for pre spawn Brook Trout! This is fly fishing at it's finest.
Fall in the Appalachian Mountains is magical. The air cools, the water temperature drops, and the brook trout come alive and start moving up the creeks to prepare to spawn. As the leaves change colors… so do the brook trout. And it could be argued that there is no more beautiful fish in the world. The patterns on a native brook trout are mesmerizing and their colors are incredible.
I will often times state the opinion that the brook trout is the most beautiful fish on earth. But I want to specify that not all brook trout have the ability to carry that title. Most stocked brook trout, and even the brook trout I’ve seen out west, couldn’t sit in the same room with a native Appalachian brook trout. The blue halos, pumpkin orange bellies, and pink spots set these fish apart from the rest. There is truly nothing else like it.
This video was dedicated to the native Appalachian brook trout, which in most areas in the northeast have started spawning by now. In other words it’s best to leave them alone for a month or two just to let them do their thing, so that there are plenty of brook trout in the streams for years to come. These fish are the gems of the Appalachians and should be treated as such.
Thanks for watching! #troutfishing #flyfishing #fishing

I grew up along a northern WI brook trout stream in the early 1970s -- a much slower, lower gradient creek than your mountain streams, but the brookies were just as beautiful. I still get back home to fly fish it once or twice a season, the magic is still there. Thank you for the wonderful video.

I have lived in the foothills and at the base of these mountains in NC all my life. I have fished a lot of places. But there is nothing like catching our Native Brookies in their home water. These fish do not live in ugly places. They are a treasure and worth preserving. Back in the 80s we beat up ever stream we saw. I know you are familiar with Boone. I am a local, hit me up sometime for a chat or just swap fishing stories. I'll tell ya this, it ain't like it used to be... Carry on. Enjoy your videos and your take on things. Take care.

That's a clever little thing I noticed you wiggle the rod on the retrieve and that must slightly jerk the flys to tempt a bite, I've done similar stuff slightly pulls of the fly line at sharp small movements to make the fly twitch but I never thought of letting the rod do that so I'll keep that in mind.

I've got a beautiful old split cane fly rod that can go from 6ft to 10ft inter changeable lengths,.anyway it's got a beautiful tiny reel and I can't believe I found it at the local dump were people leave things others might want cuz I checked out the value and the rod was £200 and the reel £90 and that was starting prices, anyway have you ever used old gear or split any rods and vintage reels?? I'm honestly too scared of doing any damage to the one I found so I've put it on display instead lol. Great trout videos as always 👌 👏

Were you fishing in an old-growth forest? Much of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was clear-cut before the land was purchased and made into the Park. The resulting rise in water temps and runoff pretty much wiped out the native brookies. The Park Service has been trying to restore the brookie population for years.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 8 ай бұрын
No I don't believe anywhere I've fished is considered old growth, almost all of it was clear cut back probably 100 years ago give or take.

@@hardmanfishing It's amazing that the ancestors of those brookies survived the clear-cuts.

@@smctrout4423 Yeah I'm not sure how they did, It may not have all been clear cut at the same time. A lot of the areas I fish have great connectivity so usually if one stream gets wipes out by the fish do eventually come back.

I've ordered many flies from LL Bean and Orvis... and they're great... my wife bought me some collections from Ventures Fly Co last Christmas and they have a great selection. There's a start... but there are many places to order them... just look into what flies work best in your area. Calling a Fly Shop can help.

There is "no best." Orvis Clearwater is a very good starter rod/reel... I own lots of different rods/reels (I'm a gear junkie so I can't stop buying them)... I have my favorites, but it's really just a personal thing... fly shops are good at letting you cast rods at the store... pick a set-up that just feels right. Your cast/presentation is what really makes the difference.

I think color and size have more to do with it then anything, lately ive caught a few browns on a black wulff size 14 and brookies on a olive foam caddis size 16. But in my area outside of a few small (and i mean size 22) mayfly hatches its more about terrestrials then anything. Could also do a dry dropper combo with either a hares ear or pheasant tail.

It depends I've learned and always been told to observe things around you before you choose a fly see what kind of insects are around the water or falling in. I was fishing last weekend with a random fly and noticed massive amounts of these red looking bugs swarming the water and the were rising grabbing them so I swapped to a smaller red fly and immediately caught one
