Nice bike ! The thing I appreciate about Obrea bikes is it is a Co Op . Meaning it is employee owned. So the employee share the profits . I personally think this is a great business model that should be implemented much across industries. Thanks Steve! Hope you’re feeling better these days.

I agree, the branded parts spec is amazing, especially when many hardtail’s are kitted with house brand parts. As for the frame and geo, I think it puts it directly in the Enduro and stable at high speed category. Can’t wait to see your ride impressions.

Hi Steve, i got the Laufey H-LTD from 2022, i bought it last year. Some people complained about the brakes, cause only deore 2 piston. To me no problem. Bar and Stem were Race face, wheels, bottom bracket and cranks as well. Only things i changed were grips and the saddle, grips were BC Orbea and the saddle was a Fitzik not fittin my bud. I took Ergon grips and SQlab saddle. But the bike is real fun. Okay, it's pretty stiff....but to me it doesen't matter. I'm waitin' for your ride to judge the new Laufey. Best whishes from Germany, stay powered under high voltage🖖

24' Orbea Occam m10 with Reynolds Blacklabel 329 Trail Pro wheels is way, way on top of the list of the 100-ish bikes I've ridden. Its so, so fast for being somewhat of a "Stumpjumper EVO." Can't help but appreciate the bike. The 440 chainstays are "business class." But, the speed of the bike is overwhelming "fun."

Love that bike, and actually considered it but ended up getting a Roscoe 9. For the parts spec I actually don't get the difference, they look very similar to me except that Trek uses their Bontrager parts around (that I think are great). For the pricepoints it has to be considered that I live in Italy, so the Roscoe here costs 2000€ approx, that is 500€ cheaper than the equivalent Orbea, but I got mine on sale for a 20% off, so it was a no brainer at that point
@werk4408

Maybe with 20% off but at normal market price the Roscoe 9 is one of the worst value for money hardtails out there. For eg. in my country I can get the Orbea Occam full suspension for basically the same price as the Roscoe 9. Also many better hardtail options too once you go to that price point.

I absolutely love my Occam, but I dont think this will be my next hardtail. Looks like a hard charger meant for going up and down and at 7/10ths or more. Just got that exact bike a few days ago. Only took it on a short ride. Didn't feel anymore or less compliant than my 2021 giant fathom but haven't gone tubeless yet so wasn't running low tire pressure. Those tires are too heavy and slow for me. Gonna throw bontrager xr3/xr4 tire combo that I run on the fathom to make it more zippy. Love the climbing position with the seat angle though. Didn't feel playful, but I don't ride playful anyways so it doesn't bother me. I also like the cool symbols on the downtube. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on how it rides. I've only been riding a few years and the only other hardtail I've ridden is my fathom so I can't make as good of a comparison as you will be able to make with your experience. Glad you are able to still get out and ride. Cheers!

@RichMcIsaac I'm a bad example for sizing, I'm short with really long arms so I don't think I can help you with sizing comparison. I rode the bike again on some steeper aggressive stuff and it rides really good on that which is what I wanted it for. It also does feel more supple than I originally thought. Overall it felt really good, I'm sure I'll like it even more when I go tubeless with my proffered tire setup

It would have been great to see a bit more of downtube protection than a transparent sheet. The components brand isn't "BC" but rather "OC" (like Orbea Components). Hey Steve, I've noticed a tendency with droppers to increase the diameter to increase the stiffness. That sounds great on a full-sus but maybe the opposite of what we want for a hardtail. It seems like the flex in a seatpost is a major source of comfort on a hardtail. Any thoughts on that?
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 7 ай бұрын
All the builder i talk to say the seat tube isnt where flex is happening, and it makes sense. an extra .7mm diameter isnt going to make a huge difference. Anyway, having a dripper in there would prevent flex anyway
@ifitrollsrideit530
@ifitrollsrideit530 7 ай бұрын
@@hardtailparty Aha OK thanks. I was thinking more about the diameter of the dropper post itself than the frame's seat post. i.e. a longer, thinner dropper post will flex more. Mind you I think you're right, 0.7mm difference doesn't sound like a lot now you mention it. I guess the frame builders must know from those flex test machines.

I like the high stack, don't like the 440mm chainstay. To me, Orbea seems a bit confused with their geo choices. 440 CS leans more towards cross country, but then you have a 64.5 HT angle which seems slack for CC. But you can't always go by numbers, looking forward to what your testing reveals.
@MW-ud8zp
@MW-ud8zp 7 ай бұрын
Idk man 440 chainstay is simply more stable and less playful, not really necessarily cross country. Pairing longer chainstays with a taller stack is a way to balance the weight distribution on the bike.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 7 ай бұрын
I feel like the stack isnt super high on this. I was surprised by the 440 cs too. I think they did that because it puts more weight on the front tire. My theory is that 64* hta bikes sell better than 65, because people want to be hardcore, but a slacker hta has less weight on the front tire. To shift the weight back to the front tire, they lengthen the rear. I have a feeling this bike is going to want fast speeds and wide open trails

It’s a lot like my Rocky Mountain Growler 40 I picked up in January, except it’s double the price. This Orbea is as much as cross country bike as my RM Growler is, which is not a cross country bike at all. I guess the main geo difference, is a 10 mm higher bottom bracket, which would be nice. But if I gotta spend an additional $1600 for an additional 10 mm clearance , I’ll stick with RM Growler and throw some Race Face Chester pedals on it, which is what I did.

I'd take a Rockshox fork over a Suntour one any day of the week. Also prices are entirely region dependent and can vary quite a lot. Where I'm located you definitely can't get Growler 40 for half the price of a Laufey... There's the 2023 Growler 20 on sale and sure enough it is almost half the price of Laufey with worse components and an even worse XC Suntour fork with 130mm travel only.

@@werk4408 There are 2 Growler 40's for sale today at Thunder Mountain Bikes in Sedona for $999. They each have 140 travel and an Air Fork. If your anywhere in the west, I bet gas money there and back is not anywhere near the $2000 difference to get the Laufey mailed to your door. Roll up in your Mini Cooper with your 33 mile per gallon. But I realize that's silly. Forgive my hyped up nonsense. I get people are hung up on components and brand in the bike world. I am not. And yes, a Roxshox or Fox is better than the Suntour, you bet, but at my skill level, I really don't think it makes a difference. The fact is I am not a professional rider and I am not sure I would know what to do with any mountain bike with more than 130 or the 140 travel on the Growler 40 I have. (The other bike I have is the San Quinten 3 with 130 Travel). Both those bikes can land me in the hospital. If I had a bike with 150 or 160 travel, and used them as intended, I'd end up in the hospital for sure. I spent S2000 for that San Quinten 3 bike at the peak of pandemic bike madness. Both bikes are above my skill level presently. Meaning I am not able to ride them to their full potential yet. Got this pesky thing such as my family and job getting in the way of my riding skills development. Your average person my age (55) or anyone older than me, that are not a mountain biking professional or enthusiast, quite simply think me insane for being willing to spend $2000 on a Mountain bike. I bought the Growler 40 primarily as a second / buddy bike, so those same people that think me mad, can ride with me and not break themselves or their Wal Mart Bikes on the Arizona trails.

@@kendrawheelie7809 Not sure why you're talking about travel amount on the fork when all I said previously was that Rockshox make better forks than Suntour. And yes there might be Growlers out there with 140mm travel for 1/3 of the price of the Laufey but we have to put everything in perspective. The particular model of Orbea Laufey reviewed here is the absolute top of the line L-HTD, you shouldn't really compare that with the Growler as it's much closer in terms of specs and prices to the entry level Laufey H30. So let's compare these two real quick. We have the Growler 20 (model 2023) that currently sells for around $1300 with inferior parts (drivetrain and fork especially) and then you also have the Laufey H30 (model 2024) that sells for ~$1400 with Deore 1x12 drivetrain and Rockshox Recon fork. Objectively the frame of the Orbea is nicer too but the differences are small. At the end of the day it all comes down to what deals people around the globe have access to. Where I'm based in central Europe the Growler is just a bad deal all together, there's too many better options for around the same price. For people based in USA maybe that's not the case as Orbea will not be priced so competitively there, which is to be expected considering it is a Spanish company.

I'm not a fan of downtube storage. Mostly because, they are not big enough. A tube and a few tools barely fit. If the downtube had a larger diameter, it would be much more useful. It seems to be a common theme with hardtails that they are all becoming longer slacker and with lower bb. Basically trail bikes are becoming more rare you are basically left with Enduro or XC, but not much in between which is a shame. it is definitely a marketing thing because most people would feel more comfortable with a steeper head tube. If we want an enduro bike, then it’s best to get a full suspension

I 100% agree. That's why i made the stanton Sedona, my signature bike, a solid trail bike that's fun at slower speeds. I see a huge gap in the market for great light trail bikes, where hardtails are best.

I am a big fan of slacker hta on hardtails for the steaming feel at speed(64-65) ish. That feeling of getting the bike leaned over and really get the side lugs biting and throwing dirt is exhilarating.

as usual - bling-bling (XT) the derailleur instead of upgrouping the shifter (SLX). Would#ve made a ton more sense other way round...

It makes me happy to see people noticing this. Maybe if enough people start noticing these things the companies will swap it around.

@@RotormanMTB it sells more bikes. Most people look at the derailleur, not the shifter. Bike companies have been doing this for 30+ years.

I think the biggest challenge for hardtails right now is that there are so many good value full sus bikes are on sale. A lot of screaming deals. Laufey looks like a good bike for the price but doesn't feel like good value in today's market....

I totally disagree with seat tube shortening.. I have long legs and if too much seat post is showing it is too flexible and does not transfer power well when seated.

Good input. What length dropper do you run? How tall are you and what seat tube length do you prefer?

I agree with the full seat tube use but also hope they will consider adding bolts that are blocked from going through and through and still have a short depth for mounting tool kits or something light. BTW, I have a 200mm dropper on my Banshee Paradox V3(I got this way back in the day due to your reviews Steve and I love it and the flexy frame - hope you are doing well and getting enough exercise btw)

. and I do wish the dropper was lower in the frame (currently at about 3" from being slammed) but I still need the height vs the drop. There is a balance of how much the seat gets in the way vs not being able to sit when you need to rest or push down for traction while sitting. I got the Specialized Power seats because of the short nose and fit. This Orbea Laufy with the steepness really amazes me and makes me wonder if the seat is going to be TOO far forward for the longer lighter climbs. It also means you have to slam it to keep it out of the knees way when turning or moving around in the center.

I believe that a 36 or mazybe a Z1 would suit better the raw nature of the bike. A 34 is way better for light trail scenarios. I just kove that Orbea design.

Mean while Lauf is desperately trying to build a new bike they can name some cutsy version of Orbea. Some options under consideration thus far; 'OurBae', Orbly', and 'dam it thats out company name stop it'. Admittedly that last one is a bit of a mouthful, ,theyre still white boarding it.

Oh man, naming a product, especially a bike, is so much work. The struggle is real. Id love to experiment with a few of lauf's forks. Gen 1 of this bike was named the loki, but marvel got mad at orbea for using that name, so they changed it to Loki's father, laufey. Little did they know marvel was going to use Laufey too...
