This was a good comparison, however the pricing is very different here. The phanteks is £50 which the dark rock and dh15 are over £80. This pricing here makes much more sense based on there performance. You also didn't mention that the phanteks cooler comes in 5 colours, black, red, blue, orange and gold. Which means you can buy one to match the other parts. 👍

As an user of Noctua myself, i wanna say, that after almost 8 years, my NH-D14 is still working just like new. Virtualy silent, damn effective, and needs very little to no maintenance at all. It keeps my 6700k at 4.6 ghz at under 60 celsius when gaming, and i do game for very long periods. Noctua is right on that warranty man, they realy know their stuff! Also, great video man! @@HardwareScientist You should also consider the Mugen 5 for the midrange round-up. Also it would be nice to tell people exactly what heat-load you put on these coolers, Intels "95W" TDP varies from model to model even in the same generation. A good idea would be to increase the heat-load so the differences are more apparent. 2 coolers may get the same temps at say 95W but be worlds apart at 150W due to heat-pipes being overwhelmed.

@@skotadism0s Mugen 5 will be included in the budget cooler roundup! The 95W is locked in with BIOS settings, so it's a direct measurement from Intel's own sensors. I will be testing a lot of coolers at 125W after I finish this set of videos. 150W is a bit too hot for some coolers to handle at low fan speeds, so the CPU throttles making the results invalid.

Is really nice to see a scientific comparison between these models, and not a simple showdown, what matters is the temperature performance, I would love to see a video like this with AIO water cooler of one, two and three fans, it would be really nice, most guys just compare the FPS and the frequency which is insane, besides, if the computer can'T handle that workload, it's relevant how many FPS you obtain, you need to have good temperatures, that is the most important thing in desktops in my opinion, good temperature control, so you can last really long using your pc below 70 °C and lower even

By far the biggest downside to my Dark Rock Pro4, is that to efficiently give it a thorough dusting, you do need to remove if from you cpu due to the placement of the middle fan. For both the Noctua and DRP4, you won’t get a significant year increase in cooling performance unless you go with a full custom water loop in your syatem. Their performance is comparable enough to NZXT Kraken AIOs that that you’re judging if 3 degrees and appearance is worth the cost of an extra $30-$40.

I have a Noctua cooler for my current-rig which is kinda old. When I initially bought it from a friend in 2011, I had and Intel i7 2600k Sandy Bridge Quad-Core 3.7GHz, 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and two GTX 580 cards in SLI. The i7 2600K Quad-Core (eight-threads) is probably the best CPU Intel ever made so that plays a part in it too, but my Noctua cooler has done a fantastic job for the last 10 years. Just occasional blasts of compressed air to keep dust out and that is all. I'm about to go hard with a Ryzen 9 3900X 12-core/24 thread, RTX 2070, 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD, 64GB of DDR4 3200 RAM. I decided to stick with the Noctua brand and get the NH-D15 (black-version.) Hopefully this rig will last 10 years also.

Noctua are best at price/performance but they are ugly AF. Be quiet is the winner with performance and looks and i would say even the price since is not a big difference. Phanteks is good but with those white fans you would probably spend some money buying black fans. Thermalright is ocd with that fan sticking out of radiator line. Cooler Master is just for effect. With that small rad, If you have a pentium or i3 (also money) and you care about lights and show then that's the choice.

Not to mention the performance and noise level on it is excellent.

Awesome video, very informative. I do have a suggestion though: If you do another video like this in the future, please test on a higher heat load. A 95W heat load is way too low for these top end coolers to show off their stuff. Not only might it exaggerate differences in design to use a higher heat load, but also the data would be more representative of use cases for overclocked CPUs.
@HardwareScientist
@HardwareScientist 5 жыл бұрын
This test bench is used for all coolers, including low-end ones, so 95W load is necessary to prevent the low end coolers from overheating. Also 95W is a more realistic number for most people. But for some videos (like my last one) I will use a higher load like 125W to represent those who really push their CPU to the limit.

I have an old Thermaltake Silver Arrow. It's been running for something like 9 years no problems. So the minimal warranty on the Grand Macho doesn't bother me. Just got a new Ryzen 3000 series CPU and Mobo to replace my old X58 Xeon system. So this cooler video has been really helpful :)

This is some interesting data, actually if you look closely at the NH-D15S you can see that at higher RPM you actually get diminishing returns. It’s hard to see but it looks like it actually increases in temp in the middle of the graph. It looks like if you could stop where the NH-D15S hit its lowest temp, you can get a quieter and better performance cooler than the Dark Rock Pro 4.

I'm just being a nitpicker here: For future tests of dBA vs temperature I would highly suggest placing temperature along the X axis as temperature is controlled variable and dBA is the compared variable. It would also make your chart easier to read. RIght now, the way your chart is formatted it's read like "at this loudness the cpu is this temperature" when it would make more sense to say "at this cpu temperature, the cooller is this loud"
@HardwareScientist

dBA is actually the controlled variable because it changes with fan speed.

Noctua is no longer the cheapest but I'll say it hardly ever loses a comparison battle. I always go with the dark rock pro because of the looks and it's typically only about 1 or 2 degrees off the noctua.. so it's really just hair splitting. Great job in this vid!

Hi. What Thermal paste do you use during the test? Same for all coolers? Or the paste from each manufacturer? Allegedly even paste is kind of big deal and can have big influence on the performance. Can you do test of thermal paste? Otherwise quite cool videos. Subscribed already :)

$73 in Finland for my PH-TC14PE (exact that color, dunno how you can say noctua brown puke looks better :D) $84 Le Grand Macho, $86 NH-D15S, $95 NH-D15, $98 Dark Rock Pro 4 and horrible silly price of $153 for MasterAir Maker 8. Also that 2000 cases compatible, nope, more like 20 :D It says height and 171mm with fans, but that's without ram, you need 180mm clearance case to fit it in. So basically only cases with 140mm rear fans, like yours. But any dual tower cooler like NH-D15 will have same issue that 140mm front fan has to go on top of ram, so it's 140mm+31-44mm=171-184mm case.

Good review - I opted for the NH-D15S in my itx build : uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/PbCbt6 For my own aesthetic desires , I decided to sharpen up its looks with black Chromax fans and covers (admittedly an extravagance for a case without a viewing panel) yet remove the lid and it's way more visually pleasing.
