As a 4 year Model 3 Tesla owner, I installed a 50amp 240 volt outlet inside my garage. We use the charging cable that came with the car to charge the car when necessary. The car charges 28 miles per hour. I did buy a second charging cable which we leave in the car for when we travel any distances. My wife loves being able to say that she hasn't bought gas for years. Having charging capability in your garage is very convenient.

@ElectricProAcademy6 ай бұрын
In most EV chargers, including this particular unit, 6/3 is not required because they charge at 240V. HOWEVER 1) it's always worth checking the manufacturer's specs in their documentation, 2) NEMA 14-50 outlets do require a neutral wire (and therefore 6/3 cable), and 3) should there be an issue with either of the load-carrying conductors down the road, the 3rd wire can be easily re-colored and substituted for the faulty wire.

That unit maxes out at 40. Is this the same wiring for the 50amp Autel charger?
@weaesq7 ай бұрын
He is using 6 guage wire x 3 with ground. This would be a preferred guage but it is stiffer and harder to route and would work for the 50amp charger. However, you would need a different breaker. He is only using a 50amp breaker with the max current on the autotel set to 40 amps. You would need a 60amp breaker at the panel. That 60amp eats up quite a bit of the available 200 amps of a panel. If your panel was only 100amps, it can use over half and you would have to limit other breakers. Hard to say how much the extra 10amps of capacity helps you in charging - it depends on the car.

12 kW is 50 amps, so don't you need a 62.5amp circuit once you de-rate for continuous load? Or are you de-rating the EVSE to 9.6 kW? I'm still watching so maybe you do cover this later in the video. (edit) just watched to the end -- I think you're supposed to set the selector inside to 40 amps. Then the app won't allow you to select anything greater than 40. How you have it configured now will allow you to overload the branch circuit by setting the current limit to over 40 amps in the app, which is no bueno.
@ElectricProAcademy2 жыл бұрын
I agree with your logic, bro! It's a 60 amp breaker with 48 amp rate of charge in this case which is 80% and compliant with continuous load derate requirements.
@jeffmaling95772 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricProAcademy Correct if you assume the charger will NEVER be set to anything over 40 Amps. However, as an Electrician, shouldn't you design to the maximum capacity of the device?...knowing that some renter in a rush will surely figure out how to set it to 50 Amps? In the case of the 50A continuous load the device is rated for, you would need to derate to 62.5A, which would bump you up to 4 AWG and a 70A breaker. Seems to me that instead of running an un-used 6 AWG neutral, you might have spent roughly the same money on a 4/2 cable, and used a 70A breaker. That would be safer, more future proof, and make better use of those 1000 amps you just added. With your current setup, you're leaving 25% of your charging capacity on the table with no compliant way to use it aside from replacing the conductors. If I was a paying customer, I'd be pretty bummed about that. The good news is that current Tesla's can charge at max 48A, which would still be compliant with your current setup...but just barely...and with no future headroom. I loved the video...just some constructive feedback. Keep up the great work...your videos are top notch and I learn something new every time! Ahhh...I see the problem now...4/2 Trable Cable and 4/2 NM are both unobtainium. So to use #4, you would need to run conduit or flex and pull THHN...so I can see why you would call the 6/3 good enough...which it is for virtually all current use cases.

Good install but by code you need to turn the dial down to 4 for 40 amps. Most electricians use thhn wire because the romex is only rated for 44 amps under the 80 percent rule. I also like setting to 48a so I can use a 60 amp instead of 70.
@weaesq7 ай бұрын
I don't think he is exactly using ROMEX here. He is using 6 guage wire and not 8 guage. He looks to be in a colder climate as well so I don't think there is a temperature derating but I could be wrong. So 6 guage stranded copper romex is rated to 55 amps, but you are derating that by default using an 80 percent rule down to 44 amps. I thought one derrated romex from its maximum current rating using temperature and the number of wires carrying current from the NEC tables.

Question for the experts: if I am utilizing a GE 100 Amp 240-Volt Non-Fused Emergency Power Transfer Switch, would that become my main panel, and all other need to have to have neutrals and ground separate? Thanks
@weaesq7 ай бұрын
FYI- I am an old electrical engineer and not an electrician, but have thought through a similar question for supplying two chargers. Most newer EV charges in the US do not use neutral (white). They use the two hot wires (red and black). Your GE switch would need to be two switches (double pole) and double throw for a transfer switch of the two hot wires. If something else is using neutral, you can wire that directly to it without using a three pole transfer switch. Ground is always routed to the GE switch and to the charger and whatever other load you are using. Ground wire can be a somewhat lesser gauge than that used for the two hot wires. He is running 6 guage wire for the hot lines and nuetral in this new cable system for the charger. Not sure what guage is ground. It is 6/3 with ground. Not sure what you mean by the power transfer switch becoming your main panel. Good luck. Hope this is helpful.

Only active line condition/surge protection is for lighting and manmade surges plus if you get a double surge the first one compromised the system and the second fry stuff. That why I added surgex for my computer. As for the house it's very expensive a good surge protection can take all types and does not sacrifice its self, but only replaceable components. Plus their big and heavy and isolate ground and nutral so entire load is protected. The cheapest lighting protection is 2 to 3 Knotts in the wire. This from nasa documentary.

In essence, whenever I see a risk for the cores to bend over and go outside of the connector they're supposed to go into is when I'd recommend using them. So usually when putting flexible wire into screw or pressure fit terminals. Especially when there's risk of a short.
@imark77777772 жыл бұрын
They're not used around here because most of the wiring is done with a lower strand count. If stranded. However in industrial panels and the like it's more common place. I didn't get a good look at the wire he was using but it does look like it was a little higher strand count then what is normally used and I might've used them in this case. I got myself a cheap set last year and they are great for what they're used for. On slightly stranded cabling they're not ideal and are more likely to come off.

Our extended family has a Victorian home that has been in the family since construction in the early 1900’s. The home’s chandeliers feature both gas lighting and electric lighting. As a kid, remember being fascinated about the gas lighting in these chandeliers…apparently my great great Uncle who built the house put in gas lighting because he thought this whole electricity thing was just “a passing fad”.

Ever since your collaboration with Scott from Everyday Home Repairs, I've been following and subscribed to your channel. Would you happen to have recommendations for a company that does rewires on old brick bungalow homes? I live in the north side of Chicago with a 100 year old home. I'm a new homeowner and am havinga hard time trusting a lot of recommendations from people around me. I got a quote for $40k for a "2-flat" single family bungalow, with a basement, from the most reputable company in my area. Hope that charger makes life a lot easier and keeps the kids playing their video games. Take care
