I had an interesting conversation with this gentleman who had high praises and regards for a Hindu sant maharaj ('holy-man'). He said this sant is so pure that he travels with his own men followers and only these men are allowed to do cooking and sewa for him. When I asked why only men can do cooking, his reply was same because women gets menstrual cycle so they are not pure. My dad and I were shocked but I did ask him "would you have married your wife if she didn't get her menstrual cycle?" Babj ji is simply saying that time while in period day women should or man while suffering with pile, cold or other physical suffering which can spread dirt or hygienically not good we should not sit SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB G "TABIAA" for guru g respect or care. that mean women or man are not be apaviter. why these people doesn't want to under sand this easy. 1. even in that time of period women are not comfortable. 2. human blood can get from their vanes for blood needy people medically . but women period blood has ***********************can't be use. 3 if we can't understand or guru sahib has given write to speak to all of us, it doesn't mean we say teachers are wrong it may be we are not to able to understand we should work on it we should all follow guru sahib path then may be his kripa nall we can understand. It is an utter disgrace that Hari Singh Randhawa said that women are impure because of their periods. Hari Singh is an illiterate person who has never been to a science classroom and has no understanding of how human body works. All he is good at doing is making up mythical, nonsensical, and untrue stories and potray them as if they are true. He either has no idea of what the fundamentals of Sikhi are or he doesn't care. I am urging Sikh sangat to stay away from such pakhandis and think critically. I salute the women who asked him questions.

While religion has the potential to expand our awareness, still we must be vigilant about accepting illogical and superstitious nonsense, including that somehow women are impure because they have periods and therefore they cannot fully participate in religious ceremonies. The idea that women should be barred from religious ceremonies and service/seva goes against the equality taught by our Gurus. In contemporary society many Sikh women are highly educated, entering the workforce as professionals, and society has globally progressed as a whole in terms of women's rights. Backward-thinking Babas such as Hari Singh Randhawa are wrong when they defend the discrimination and exclusion of women on the basis of Sikh scriptures. This Baba consistently takes only one line from Gurbani and distorts the original message of the Gurus to justify his illogical and superstitious conclusions including his biased judgment that women become impure due to menstruation. Aside from the potential discrimination, bias and exclusion of women that follows from such a conclusion, it is also unsupported by Gurbani. Mostly importantly, his view contradicts teachings of the Gurus in terms of equality of humanity regardless of caste, race or sex. Gurbani also repeatedly speaks against ideas of ritual purity such as against sutak, ritual pollution and affirms the equal status of women. So when someone like this Baba goes against the teachings of the Gurus, I need to question his reasoning and conclusions. When you check his references to Gurbani, you find that in fact Baba Hari Singh Randhawa has only taken a single line and so distorted the actual message of Gurbani. The original message contained in Gurbani is about living high ethical and moral values, not about fear of whether blood, urine or anything else is ritually "pure" or "impure." These ideas return us to many concepts that we associate with Brahmanism - concepts which our Gurus consistently rejected. Due to coercion and pressure from Sant Samaj leaders, including Baba Hari Randhawa, Sikh women have been stopped from participating in performing Kirtan in Harimandir Sahib, from distributing food in the Langar Hall, and from participating in Sukhasan processions. When we consider practices such as dowry, abortion of female fetuses, favouring boys over girls in families, and domestic violence against women, we can understand some of the challenges faced by Sikh women. Now thanks to some Babas discrimination of females at the holiest shrine in Sikhism, Darbar Sahib, is accepted based on ignorance and misogynistic beliefs. We need to reflect upon the fact that as Sikhs we are failing to live up to the ideals and standards set out by our Gurus. Instead we accept ignorant, illogical and superstitious nonsense without consulting Gurbani for ourselves. As Sikhs we proudly proclaim that Sikhism is about equality of women, it's time we start to practice it.

Rohit84up Your comment seems to have some inherent biases and it is your responsibility is to examine them. My understanding is that Sikhi is highly ethical, modern and egalitarian faith. Some Sikhs due to lack of understanding Gurbani, accept a variety of superstitions which run counter to the Guru's teachings. These include acceptance of caste, inferiority of women, and reliance upon rituals for salvation or purification. The Gurus taught equality, meditation on the Shabad (word), and stressed living an ethical life above ritualistic practices - Those values hold relevance today as they did during the period of the physical Gurus. Wisdom as contained in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is eternally vital for all ages and with the Grace of Guru (gur parsaadi), we can find the Truth contained in it. In comments one can see through the abusive language used for women kind. Babaas and Sants claim to be mouthpieces of Satigurus but they are actually victim of their Mayavi and macho vision that they have stolen from the clergy of other faiths specially Brahamanism.
