The pipe organ is by far THE MOST BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT EVER!!!!! It's full of so much character, personality, charm, light, color, powerful emotions, and so much creativity. I can never get enough of hearing such a magnificent instrument.

No pipe organ is built to last forever. Indeed its sounds are beautiful. And yes, we now have digital organ sounds that never go out of tune and most importantly, they can be midi compatible. Update your understanding. We are now in the 21st Century. Listen and learn. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. CVD.

Built to last 500 years but in the USA they seem to be trashed before they are 50-75, I just removed an 8 rank 1932 Moller from a former church that was sold in 2000 to a group who is using it as a live theater, they wanted the organ gone to use the space for storage, it was working perfectly fine up to about 2005 and hadn't been used since. That one is NOT unusual, I removed a 15 rank 1927 Kilgen organ around 2002 the church was going to throw in the dumpster because it needed expensive repairs, the neglect to repair the leaking roof didnt help. They unfortunately allowed people from the church to take small pipes as souvenirs, so they took pipes from both sides of the center walkboards and essentially ruined 15 ranks of pipes as about 20 pipes from the middle of each rank were gone. A Reuter organ from 1934 I also removed around 2005 when the church wanted to get rid of it after buying an electronic organ. A LOT of small electro-pneumatic organs from the 1930s are winding up in the dumpster because they all need releathering and extensive repairs due to age, the electrical codes require ALL the old cloth wiring to be replaced if ANY is altered- a very expensive task since to rebuild a windchest they often have to be removed to the shop, so churches look at maybe $150,000 to do this work and see a $50,000 electronic organ and guess what happens...

The first time I ever got to experience a proper pipe organ, I was about 13 or so. It was one of those "All the kids who play instruments will go put on a concert at the local church to show off their talent" kinda things. Of course, the organist had talent too, and a pipe organ the size of a wall. And that thing made the floor and my chest vibrate. And I've had a weakness for pipe organs ever since :D.
