yes the music is really beautiful. basically this is the theme of the movie called The Rocketeer (1991) directed by Joe Johnston who worked on the conceptual arts of B wing during the production of episode 6. and media that decided to touch this theme at the time that this episode comes out as a leading actor that helped in the development of the b wing he had died and then they put this song in his honor

It's an homage. Joe Johnston was a part of the effects team on the original trilogy, and a concept artist for ESB and RotJ. He's the guy who designed Boba Fett. Lucas later paid his film school tuition and kept him on at Lucasfilm during his schooling, and he went on to be a decently successful director, one of his earlier films being...The Rocketeer. This entire scene is one huge acknowledgement of the heritage and legacy of Star Wars' effects and design team. The Mon Cal's named after Ralph McQuarrie, who was THE concept artist responsible for Star Wars' aesthetics...he designed the B-Wing.

This is the prototype, B6, is the only B-Wing with a composite beam (superlaser thing). Later models have better gyroscopic cockpits, but no composite beam.

Marketing error. When the entrepreneurs came to design the toys for Episode 6, the original props for the ships were still labelled "Ship A" and "Ship B", and since Ship A just happened to look like an A, they rolled with it.

+MrDibara It might be a TIE Defender situation where it's obviously superior to its predecessors in every way. But its too expensive to manufacture in large quantities. Plus the rebel alliance wasn't known in the Legends universe for having vast amounts of resources to build what they needed, most of their stuff they had to endlessly repair and scavenge for.

+MrDibara There is no canon information that the B-Wing wasnt operative before return of the jedi or even the battle of Yavin.. same for the A-Wing (the one in rebels looks slighty diferent to the one we see in return of the jedi hinting they are diferent versions).. this is a prototype and we do know canonically that the final production B-Wing is slighty diferent to this and a single seater (no gunner)

+sparrowlt Also, we have to take into consideration that we only saw two major space battles in the original Star Wars trilogy; the two Death Star assaults. In "A New Hope", they made it very clear that they would be using smaller fighters for that battle. The B-Wing has considerably more surface space than either the X-Wing or Y-Wing fighters. And we know that the A-Wings aren't as durable or have as much firepower as the X- and Y-Wings. The reason that the Rebellion threw more firepower at the second Death Star was because they thought it was a sitting duck.

Why is there not a Lego set of this ship yet? Always loved the B Wing, and the prototype with the blood orange and the additional gunner pod looks incredible. Lego has been lacking in development for B wing models (there have only been 3-4 different B wing sets vs 10+ X wings)

Equip with Laser cannons, Ion Cannons, Proton Torpedoes, and heavy shields. And yes, it was designed by Admiral Ackbar But this one is some weird mini death star laser with wings? =/

They don't steal those prototypes. The Xwing is based off the Clone Wars Starfighter. That company was loyal to the rebellion on the start. Imperials never had them which is why they ended up creating the TIE interceptor package. Something with more punch in the engines.

The names of the A-wing and B-wing fighters were initially just place-holder names during production of *Return of the Jedi*. They planned to give them proper names later, but eventually decided to just keep them.

There actually is a little-known fighter called the T-Wing. It had been intended to replace the A-Wing, but it turned to perform poorly, and the Alliance ended up selling the T-Wing to neutral factions.

Well that was dumb... a ship that flies that awkwardly would not fly so well in its maiden voyage (you'd assume it's never been flown before based off their conversation) or by a pilot who's never flown a craft that the whole thing seems to rotate around the cockpit... and the Mini-Death Star laser really??? Stuff like this is why I don't watch Star Wars Rebels... came to see something more in line with Legends' B-Wing, left disappointed in Star Wars so called "canon" once again...

It was a fucking prototype that was ruled out because the laser array was way too power costly. This is the precursor to the B-Wing, the Blade Wing. Also, the new canon is better in my opinion.
