Most important thing when buying silver (or gold) jewelry is to figure out the price per gram you are paying!!! To do this take price of the chain ( or pendant, ring, bracelet etc) and divide by number of grams. So lets say someone is selling a 10 gram chain for $49 you do $49/10=$4.90. They are charging you $4.90 a gram
Harlembling we sell our plain silver Italian 925 silver chains for $3-4/gram
Our competitors sell for $8-20/gram.
However you can find used chains in flea markets and eBay for around $2 a gram.
If its not a gift and you dont mind cleaning it up a bit then its a greta bargain..
Just check the seller feedback first and be sure to test it with silver acid or bring to a reputable local jeweler or pawn shop to test it!

High-end designer pieces are another matter entirely. They have a signature style and cachet, and you pay for that perceived added value through the nose, but that's the luxury goods lure and they protect their brand ferociously.
