I just purchased a set of Timken bearings and James Gasket seals for the front wheel on my 76 shovel. Pretty certain both are still made in the USA.

Curious,I thought there was a small gap between the wheel and the old race that allowed the tool to get a grip in order to pull it out? Yet this new race is set against the wheel? Are you not worried about ever replacing the race again? Won't this narrow the tapered bearing outside dimensions now?
@peteregger7928 Жыл бұрын
"89" Sportster cast wheels came original with the tapered bearings. These replacements were OEM. Only the ID of the race is tapered not the OD.There is no other way to get these races out unless you have this tool, the factory HD tool or a similar tool because of the way the cast wheel is designed. I wish it wasn't so! Lol!

Do you happen to remember or have recorded the part number for the bearings and oil seals?

@@peteregger7928 thanks man! I’m rebuilding a 1989 xl1200 from the ground up, literally a basket case (but the motor is supposed to be good, just partially disassembled…we’ll see).

@@JimmyJamesHopper Glad to help! Not positive but I think the same bearings are used for the steering stem and swing arm? Good luck with the resto!
@JimmyJamesHopper Жыл бұрын
@@peteregger7928 Thanks, man! The swing arm and steering stem bearings still felt great, so I cleaned them up, repacked them and put it back together. I didn’t even pay attention to the numbers. The rear axle bearings, however, appear to be the same as the front. They’re definitely bad, too. I get a pretty good discount at the local Oreilly’s so I’ll have them cross the numbers and sizes and check their pricing tomorrow. And I’m with you on the “No Chinese train”! I appreciate your help!

did you set final end play with shims and top hat washer? Or some other way or just say eff it? LOL
@peteregger79282 жыл бұрын
Didn't show the wheel install in the video but it is something that needs to be checked! .004" - .018" for this year model. Internal hub spacer sets the end play (bearing pre-load) and could be ordered in different size lengths. To answer your question I can jerk the wheel back and forth to determine if it's loose and more than .018". If the front wheel makes a bunch of turns after prying the brake pads off the rotor and comes to a stop very slowly and smoothly they're not to tight. Bad speedometer or cable could skew the results but both of mine are good. The way I check end play is not Harley Davidson approved or the recommended way. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Purchased from Dennis Kirk, "Drag Specialties". They sell a couple different Drag Specialties kit versions and one of them comes with the Timken's. The Timken's are called out by name and P/N in the bearing kit description.

There is a better tool out there its about 50 dollars for removal and install, two piece halves grab the race, snap the handle/driver in place smack it with a hammer , easy peasey done 😊.
@peteregger79282 жыл бұрын
I saw that version being sold by Georges Garage. It will also install the race. I can't remember why but I decided against it? I think you had to purchase the handle separately or maybe he was out of stock? I figured I was only going to use it once whatever I got so maybe I just went the cheaper route? or take it to any independent harley shop and get it knocked out for $10 in 10 minutes.
@peteregger79282 жыл бұрын
That will work too! Not sure about just $10 or 10 minutes here in Las Vegas though? The tool will also work on the rear wheel, steering neck and swing arm. With today's gas prices it would cost me $12 bucks just to get to my nearest independent and back home. I actually don't mind working on my own machines... most of the time anyway.
