Are the pots on the Thomann site the exact same ones you used? I want to make sure the shafts will be long enough to come through the wood top. By the way, did you know you should never use an electric drill on a guitar? You should use a hand reamer. The drill could ruin the guitar, I know because I ruined a Gibson that way.

I have the SC version of this, with the same pup. Only mod I've needed was to fit a 3mm shim under the dogear (as there is no adjustment except the pole screws). Height is now at the sweet spot and more output for less effort. Also seems to balance out the sound too (flatter frequency response on an oscilloscope). I have other HB guitars (Teles and LPs) but this is now my "go-to" player.

Got the same HB in Benton blue with white pickguard about a year ago. Wonderful guitar for a low price, love it to death, but with a little drawback: after a while of playing I noticed that the guitar picked up much more hum from the surrounding electricity installation than other guitars when used with a higher gain setting on the amp. It seemed to get worse when I touched the strings with a carbon pick. Being an electrical engineer I researched the issue and found a difference in the HB design compared to a regular Junior: the latter has a grounding wire from one of the screwed-in bridge posts to the pickups which the HB version doesn't have. This keeps the strings from having a floating potential versus the pickups which causes the strings to work like antennas. Seems HB took a short cut in manufacturing and didn't mount a wire - when I added it back in, all the extra hum was gone. (Admittedly, it's a P90 so the pickup will still produces some hum naturally.) Small mod but totally worth the effort.
@stilllifewithguitar1848 ай бұрын
Are they all like that? They literally didn't ground the pickup?
@markusleb8 ай бұрын
@@stilllifewithguitar184I unfortunately just own one guitar of that style and haven't had the privilege to open the pickup cavity on others. I saw the grounding wire on some YT maintenance video of the original Gibson Junior and figured it might be worth trying (and it helped). If you want to, when changing strings, unscrew the P90 on the HB model and see if there is any wire from the P90 ground going to the bridge within the cavity.

Sonically there's very little difference between those pickups. I'd love to hear the stock pickups with the 50s wiring.

That's what I was thinking. While CTS pots are generally recognised to be "better" than alpha, full sized alpha pots are still decent quality, so I assume the more usable tone control comes from the 50s wiring.
@thisdyingsoul766 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same. If I got one of these guitars I would likely swap the pickup for a Gibson or Seymour Duncan or something... maybe the Lollars, depending on what's easily available. The 50's wiring wasn't to my liking when I tried it on one of my Gibsons, but in this guitar it might be the biggest improvement you can make.

Very cool sounds overall, though personally I think the wiring change itself would be good just by itself, I am joining the others saying Roswell pickup sounds terrific in comparison to the Lollar. And I am not saying "for the price", cause it can clearly keep up with boutique product, so it's just good

I agree. The wiring and messing with the height and you're there in my opinion. I've decided not to drop hundreds anymore on pickups. Unless they're truly bad. I have a Fralin HB and it's the worst of the HBs I have. If I'm going to buy a new HB I go for Brandonwound. Boutique for Duncan prices.

Cool sounds from such an unexpensive guitar! I'm surprised how good the Roswell PU sounds in comparison to the much more expensive Lollar. In my opinion the modification of the electronics (50s wiring, pots, capacitor) is quite the way to improve the sound of this guitar for a small amount of money. Actually I'm thinking about buying one of these and replacing the P-90 with a PAF to make it a real Rock'n'Roll beast. But that's just my personal taste. On the other hand the clean tones of the P-90 are absolutely awesome. Great video, especially for the comparison!

I took mine over to a friends last night and we compared it to my 2011 Gibson gold top 60s tribute with mods (Lollar P90, 50s wired CTS pots, bubble bee caps, ABR1 bridge). The HB won. My stock electronics have perfect function. Most inexpensive guitars have pots that are on or off. I have and have had some nice high end stuff. I am embarrassed by how much I love this guitar. It has an amazing playability that I cannot figure out why. The neck is similar to the Gibson. It just sounds great. I did change the the bridge, but nothing else. Your mods sound great. I would be terrified to change anything else on mine. It sounds so good as is. Maybe a switchable wiring schematic could be a good thing, with 2 different caps in the circuit, the tonal options would be a lot greater, there is not much room in the cavity though so a PCB might have to be employed. Yes... but it is mostly a mental thing much like the placebo effect. I think if you were to A/B this guitar with 20 people in a blind setting, about half would go one way and the other half would like the other. All that being said, I do think the mods are worthwhile because of that placebo effect. The knowledge that you have something you think is far superior is actually a big deal. Look at how many swear by spending silly money on a Gibson when we all know it is not logical.
