The question is... this or the Squier Affinity Jazzmaster?

I'd Snag one of these, The Affinity's are great for what they are , but i would tell every single person if they can save a little more and get a Classic Vibe , but then again they don't make Jazzies in CV's!!!!!

I can see you fighting internally to remain objective in your review of this guitar. Keep fighting. We need your unbiased review. The price might not be much to us, but to a kid who's been working all summer to make enough money for a guitar it probably is. So keep pointing out any flaws and keep helping people make informed decisions.

I'm from Brazil and and a £143 guitar + shipping and taxes might easily cross brazilian minimum wage. And considering vast majority of Brazilians live of that range of salary, a honest review is extremely important.

Now that I own a brand-new one, I can confirm that they changed the pickguard on newer guitars to something that looks much, much better. It's darker overall and lacks the white specks, so it looks pretty much identical to the original Jazzmaster pickguard. Proper sexy guitar now.

I've had this guitar for 2 days. I love it!!!! It has some issues, but you have to expect that at something below £140.00. But what works is absolutely fantastic. It is so lightweight, but you feel the neck when you're playing. It also has the most remarkable ring/chime/resonance. And that's when unplugged. It literally chimes. No other guitar I own, including a hollow body, does this. The versatility of it, with such a simple design, makes it a valuable purchase. Honestly. The bridge pickup will even work as a microphone, so watch out!!! But the tones you can get out of this thing, especially country, doo wop and funnily enough anything ethereal or experimental. It's solid and punchy, but it also kind of "floats". Hard to explain. LOVE this guitar.

You may not remember Andy but I suggested you review this HB JA60 guitar about six months ago because I fell in love with it rather and I wanted your opinion before buying one. I kind of knew you would dig this and fall in love with it. My instinct was right it suits you and you gave it the playing it deserved, and bless it, it did you proud a great review and when I buy i shall do so via your site. A small favour for the fourth HB guitar on my rack through your recommendation. Your the best matee Lots of love from Paul and Roqia in Alexandria, Egypt.

I got the Left handed version of this about 3 weeks ago, haven't put it down since. I've been watching a lot of HB reviews of various guitars and couldn't believe what I was hearing so I bought the JA-60 LH. Best bang for my buck I ever got. I'm the owner of about 20 guitars at the moment, most being high priced numbers Fender American Strats, Teles and Gibson Les Paul among others. So pleased was I with the JA-60 I bought a CST-24-T LH , another great buy and amazing guitar for the price. Great review by yourself on the JA-60 and I can understand your enthusiasm. There are different types of this guitar. This is the one with "P-90" Type pickups, there is a variant with "Jazzmaster" style pickups too. The "Jazzmaster" style ones have pickupsscrews on the outer rim of the pickup, the "P-90" style one have them in the middle row. Also the "P-90" have screws instead of polecpieces.

After reading and watching so many positive reviews I just bought a used Harley Benton JA-60OW in stock conditions. These are my observations after a few days. Positive: + The sound is amazing and perceivably different from any other guitar/pickups I owned or played so far: pretty clear and surprisingly bright pickups (especially the neck pickup!) with relatively high output. The dynamics are second to none: On an amp with a slightly crunchy setting, one can create sounds from clean to distorted just depending on the touch. Amazing! + Well (though not perfectly) set up: The nut was pretty low (which is good!), the bridge too high, the neck had no relief at all (which isn’t good), so the action wasn’t exactly low (still not much too high though) + The unamplified sound and sustain are good. + Despite its offset shape, the body sits quite comfortably on the lap. Matters of taste: o Matching headstock is a matter of taste (I’d prefer it not painted) o The guitar is pretty heavy (4kg) o The neck is chunkier than any of my other guitars’ (and I prefer thick necks). I can’t say what it is, but it doesn’t fit too comfortably into my hand. The matte lacquer was a bit rough in some places - but polishing it with a bit of superfine steel wool helped a lot. o Neither the pickup caviities not the cables are shielded, but the hum isn’t more than in other single-coil guitars. Negative: - The stock strings are horrible and should be changed right away - The frets aren’t exactely nice: pretty sharp fret ends on some frets, and pretty rough surfaces. After dressing the fret ends, polishing the frets and adjusting neck and bridge I found one super low fret which kills the tone - so I’ll have to level all frets. - Tuners are extremely stiff (but different from one another), so I will swap them most likely. - The nut is made of rather soft plastic (but does the job for now) - As with many affordable guitars, the sound is very „straightforward“ and direct, so it is hard to created nuanced single-note lines. - The volume pot sits in a really stupid spot: It’s impossible not to hit it when strumming! - Pickup height can hardly be adjusted: The screws sit super tight in the wood, so one screw broke off immediately when I was trying to turn it. When lowering the pickups, the foam underneath them will squished, so the pickups can be lowered only about 3mm. Who will be happy with this guitar? People who * don’t care about the brand name on the headstock * don’t want to spend a lot of money * look for an offset guitar without the quirky tremolo, bridge and switches of an original Jazzmaster * like heavy guitars and fat necks * are willing to put some effort into fixing the frets, the setup and the tuning pegs * rather strum than solo (I love the strumming sounds, but don’t like the single-note sounds too much) Who might not bond with that guitar? * beginners (as they will struggle with the hefty neck, the heavy weight and the fret issues) * guitar snobs Those who own the guitar: Do you agree?

@@buddycushman2851 That for sure 100% is a scam. I've purchased 6 guitars from HB and was never asked for any of that. Also, I work in the shipping industry and any concerns of those kind are the responsibility of the exporter. Obviously an import business would also have liability for those concerns as well but a single order recipient like you or me from a trusted nation (they come from Germany) wouldn't have to do any of that. Why do people persist in calling it a bolt on neck. The neck is held on by wood screws.

HI Andrew, thanks for your reviews and content. I like the overall concept of this guitar BUT I can`t stand the headstock and the pickguard. Do you think a replacement tele neck would fit that guitar? It would be interesting to see the guts of the guitar under the pickguard, electronics and so on. Regarding the bridge, is it like a Les Paul bridge? I would consider installing a Dusenberg Trem there....I know i doesnt make much sense to spend all that upgrade money on such a cheap guitar but.... Danke Schoen mate

Hey! The tele neck should fit. I'll take the guitar apart and have a look for you. The Duesenberg trem also fits well

Thanks! I will look for some tele necks out there and see how much it can cost to get rid of that headstock, suggestions?

What were the settings on your DS1??? Sounds amazing. Considering buying one and swapping out the neck for a strat style - good idea?

Jazzmaster pickups are different from P90s ?

What I mean is that if the Harley Benton has P90 pickups rather than Jazzmaster pickups that might explain the more 'rocky' tone? kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3mvnJaemb2tnpY
@duffman18
@duffman18 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah p90s are very midrangey. Jazzmaster pickups are unique, they're very jangly and trebly. With this and the jaguar, fender made guitars that are even more fender, if that makes sense. They were known for bright glassy jangly trebley tone and with these two they made them even more trebley and jangley. Jazzmaster pickups are unique, you never usually see other companies replicate them, unlike them all making strat and tele copies. I find that strange cos the Jazzmaster sounds so cool.

Looks nice, but sounds nothing like a Jazzmaster at all, because of the "wrong" bridge and pickups. I would brefer the Squier VM.

But could I modify it to fit Jazzmaster guard? That’s the only thing keeping me from ordering one now.

You'd have to get a new pg made or 3d printed. The fender guards won't fit

Their needs to be a subgenre off shoot of shoe gaze with carribean sounds, called flip-flop-gaze. Or maybe some industrial influence, to make bootgaze. The possibilities are endless

I’m actually old enough to have seen the Ramones live, nearly thirty years ago. Not much going on on the stage, but in the pit there was some serious pogo going on by some 100kg punks which made me, a skinny sixteen year old, retreat to a safer place.
