Regarding the drugs. Apparently Prince had a lot of hip pain, to the point of needing replacements. Can't confirm for sure, but that's what I'd read and heard. Apparently why he stopped wearing the high heeled boots he'd worn for decades. However he was a Jehovah's Witness and as such can't receive a blood transfusion. Pretty sure you could still have the surgery and just not sign off on the transfusion. They would warn you of the very obvious risk of death should you start bleeding out. So he was taking fentanyl which is a very short acting drug. I wasn't even aware of a pill form of it. So that would require you to take it frequently if you were having chronic pain, which would then build an addiction. Of course you slowly build a resistance to it requiring more of the drug. Prince was a smaller guy so that would have been a factor as well, taking less of the drug to overwhelm his system. This is not a drug for chronic pain. It will always be too soon.

Not meaning to monopolize comments on this old clip, but I just bought one of these and have a few notes that might help inform people considering doing the same. The biggest change is that the fretboard is now bound with what looks like dark wood, with white dot markers. Looks fantastic, and pretty unique. Also, mine is insanely heavy. Haven't weighed it but it's gotta be well over ten pounds. Like hoisting a slimmed down anvil. But man do I love it! Still under $200 (mine was b stock - small blemish or weird grain on the side near the neck pocket) with shipping, and it arrived within three days from freakin' Germany! It was set up perfectly and those pickups really do sound great. It's a very vintage-y sounding guitar, with a lot of highs even from the neck pickup, which I like. Anyway, if you're reading this because you're debating buying one of these, I'm here to tell you, you will not regret it!

Alright, this was an amazing video. I've been lusting after this or similar knockoffs of the "Prince" guitar for a while now. The funny thing is that despite being a pretty big Prince fan over the years, I didn't immediately connect this guitar with him. Yes, I'm an idiot. I just thought, "damn that's a cool looking tele! I want that!" Anyway, loved everything about this clip - fabulous playing that's right in my wheelhouse, the guitar itself of course, and your whole demeanor of "I don't care about all that mess" is refreshing. So many YT guitar channels with dudes that either can't really play or depend on crunch to do most of the heavy lifting. Usually both. Aside from the awesome J Leonard J and the Ask Zac guy, not much out there for guys like me that eschew the distortion (I gigged for years using only a Tokai strat and a Twin Reverb, no effects, I didn't even use the footswitch). Clean is where it's at. How you gonna tell one guitar from another with all that crap on there?!? I'll stop now. Loved the clip.

GREAT VIDEO! can u explain more about the ring finger doing the thumb popping?I never knew this!!!Thanks
@BeauregardHall4 жыл бұрын
It's the middle finger, and you use it to pluck/pull the high E string. If you're playing an A on the fifth fret - like a barre chord, your hand all wrapped around the neck trying to press down the low E string and the A, D, and G strings, so you're not pressing that high-E string all that hard. So it's muted, like not on purpose, it just is. As you're strumming downstrokes, upstrokes, occasionally instead of an upstroke with the pick, just yank the high-E with your middle finger. I can do a video just showing that part if you'd like.

@@GaryTisdaleFungkSta1 Also, if I understand correctly, he actually died from taking dodgy pills, which contained more active ingredients then what was supposed to be in there. @@DarthEcoli Sorry. But I have to disagree. I know for a fact it was a Hohner. Do not believe everything you read on the Inernet. Even Prince himself once said, " Use the computer, but don't let the computer use you!"
@DarthEcoli3 жыл бұрын
@@BreadSlocum I too am sorry that you are misinformed with your FACTS. The following excerpt is directly from Mad Cat's website regarding the history and Hohner's LATER involvement: Mad Cat History In 1973, the H.S. Anderson brand was launched by Moridaira, and one of the employees Mr. Shiino Hidesato (HS) designed what would become an iconic guitar, the Mad Cat. While most Japanese companies in the ‘70s produced copies from famous US-models, the Mad Cat was something completely unique. The body construction was based around a walnut center strip, with sen ash sides and tiger maple top and bottom. The hardware and pickups were not what people would normally associate with a tele-type guitar, but is more similar to a hardtail strat-style guitar, and the unique leopard-style pickguards further distinguished the Mad Cat. A little over 500 Mad Cats were made during the ‘70s, including a small batch made OEM for Hohner USA with a Hohner logo in the H.S. Anderson style. Pop artist Prince discovered one of these rare guitars early on in his career, and used it live and on countless hit-records like Purple Rain, 1999, Controversy, etc. for over 30 years now. Original vintage ‘70s Mad Cats are very rare and hard to find guitars, sought after by numerous collectors. Take from this what you shall, or don't, but I am done with this futile discussion.

I smiled all through this, in a good way, BUT one point. Prince didn't run stock Wilkinsons or whatever was in the Hohner. His guitar tech put in Kinman, hand wound and noiseless Stratocaster pickups - these ones: mobile.kinman.com/products/avn-62-singlesets-pickups.php They have balanced magnets and pole pieces to bring out the best possible string to pup set up and an overwound blues / rock bias... so hotter than a stock Strat or Tele pickup. Prince's Hohner also had a Strat hard tail bridge with the six saddles not a regular Tele ash tray so its kind of a Tele / Strat hybrid. Still clean and twangy like a Tele but without the old fashioned bits (like a baseball bat neck and poor intonation) that can make one hard to live with. Is that the gun cupboard I can hear opening from the tele traditionalists :) Yehaaa! Boys. SUBSCRIBED!

Great point. I'm wondering if he used the stock ones back in the day? Dirty Mind/Controversy era? No idea.
