I bought one... Nut and bridge left original... Everything else upgraded,,, Dimarzio's , Gotoh Stagered locking keys , CTS pots , Kaish 3 way , Orange Drop Cap.. Copper shielding though out.. Some time polishing frets... My total Cost including guitar $468.00..... End result is one of my favorite guitars of many that have cost me thousands of $.... It is a very thick heavy swamp ash body , but I believe that is where the Guitars project investment value pays in results... I've thrown in the Dimarzio Air Norton (neck).. and Sugar Chakra (Bridge) and it is simply a Rock Guitar hopped up on Lead Solo goodness..... Peace

I had a Hohner 'Prinz' model in the 90s. It was the only guitar that I gigged with. I was gutted when I had to sell it to pay two weeks rent. When i turned up with the cash a day later the landlord said "no, it's airtight' and I never saw it again. Worth a fortune now!. I have the newest version of the HB modded out completely and it's awesome.

I've been looking at this one for quite some time now, and I might pull the trigger soon! It would probably be freaking sweet to throw in some nice humbuckers, in single coil format, and give that bad boy a proper set-up! Perhaps a good bone nut and a fret dress too! ;-) Happy holidays Cheers! :-)

Just got one of these, already have it torn apart. It came as a playable and good sounding instrument with decent action. The fret ends and fretboard edges were slightly sharp but not terrible. The tuners are kind of crappy but usable, certainly. My main problems are mostly asthetic, really, even though they are structural in nature. My bridge was mounted well off the centerline of the guitar (and crooked) and the pickguards and tone control plate were not straight as a result. This also caused the strings to not pass over the neck pickup like they should really. This was caused by the heel of the neck not being cut even at 90 degrees. It is close, but not square so the neck departed the body at an upward angle with regard to the centerline of the body (toward the ceiling if you were playing the guitar). It also departs at a forward angle (the direction the strings pull it) from the neck pocket...more than a shim could really properly correct (yet it still took the factory setup and played reasonably well). This odd neck angle not only led them to install the bridge and other hardware off center so the strings would track down the neck properly, it also caused neck pocket cracks on both sides of the neck from stress, occuring in the typical place for a strat or tele. Overall I am still pleased with the guitar because I certainly could not buy a body this nice and a set of pickups, neck etc. for the small price (159)I paid for this "cosmetic b-stock." I have the skills to make it a very nice guitar so with lots of work I can correct it, but it is not ideal obviously. It IS a nice body and neck with some good features but you might expect to live with some warts if you don't want to take the time or have the skills to do some major surgery yourself. I will say this, if a person bought the guitar I recieved and wasn't bothered asthetically and took this guitar for a good setup by a knowledgeable tech, they would have a nice playing and sounding instrument quite cheap. I will detail the guitars construction in another comment.

I don't think that Thomann/Harley Benton must fear for legal steps. Who should take them? And on what grounds? Fender? NO! It's a different headstock, no problem. Hohner? NO! What can they say? "Hey, they faked our fake!"? It's a cool looking guitar with pretty decent pickups, so a pretty decent sound, but maybe a little too civilised for a Tele. This is not the guitar for a raw twang. But at these HB prices, you can buy an entire collection of different Teles. 5 different ones for €900.- is a nice collection: - this one; - a 50s butterscotch; - a 62 Custom sunburst; - a 69 or 73 Thinline; - a 73 Custom or a 73 Deluxe If you would want that all original made in USA, it would set you back 5 to 7.5 grand USED. That's not inviting for young poor guitarists. But these Harley Bentons are. Good affordable instruments are the first step in music education. And once you see the talent of your kid blooming, it is always possible to make the next step and buy a better used Tele from Fender or a used ASAT from G&L.

Thank you but... It's an ash body with a maple cap and maple neck... like the Hofner. I don't know if the original was one piece or four piece but according to what I have researched so far, the woods are similar so it isn't just 'for looks'. Can I just say also - ash with a maple cap, binding and a maple neck with a dual truss rod for £130 is a fekking amazing foundation - well done Thomann. You can get the actual noiseless Stratocaster 'hot blues' pups Prince's luthier put in... Kinmans still stock them. Which will beef up the tone. Then Gotoh tuners, Strat hard tail bridge/saddles and a bone nut. Get your luthier to polish / level the frets and add decent quality 11 / 12s rather than the flimsy 10s. So my point is, this guitar can be more than a Prince fan boy bit of memorabilia if you put a little effort in. You can have a fairly unique tele / strat hybrid (which Prince was chasing) to rival a USA Fender... and for half the money. And it will be flexible - add a decent, clean valve amp like a Laney LC30 -112 (or the Fender Reverb Deluxe it is modelled on) and a Joyo Taichi dumble clone pedal, and you will have an over driven tone and sustain not unlike Robben Ford's tele. Peace.

For those who are interested, the body (on mine) is made from two solid peices of ash that sandwich a strip of very dark wood. On the original madcats this was walnut, but this wood looks even darker than walnut to me with a very tight grain pattern. It is also VERY hard. It looks like ebony but may just be very dark (nearly black, even unfinished) walnut of some kind. It has then been covered with a maple veneer that has a centerstrip of the same black wood. This veneer is very thin, maybe just slightly thicker than a playing card. The back has no maple veneer like the original madcats, it is just the nicely finished ash. The bindings are not perfect, with some finish blemishes, but honestly no worse than some gibsons I have seen. The two peice neck is rumored to have a "fake" skunk stripe because it has the separate maple fretboard. But it isn't fake...it has been routed and filled with some wood that looks similar to the wood in the body. It clearly has been cut out and filled and there is glue squeeze out on mine in a couple of areas showing this as well as an area at the heel where it wasn't filled entirely and a hole where you can see into the neck rout. Why on earth a neck would have a separate fingerboard AND a skunk stripe I cannot say, but it does. And it makes no difference as far as I can see. The neck is very straight and the frets level on mine and the neck is very thick. It is substantial! My feeling is that this helps the sound of the guitar, it has a meaty tone with good sustain. Hope this helps anybody else looking for details on the construction.

@@michaelworse6034 if you read my other comment I detail some of the issues mine came with. I have corrected it, but wow, it was a bear. I ended up buying a gotoh bridge and saddles and Gotoh tuners and roller string trees. I refinished the neck, and filled and then redrilled every screwhole in the guitar. The guitars are cheap and it shows. Even the screws are absolute sh!t quality. I broke a neck bolt removing it! And I can tell you it required very little torque to break it. Two other screws broke on the guitar reinstalling them, even in pre-drilled holes. I have been working on guitars a long time and have never broken a neck bolt. It IS a nice guitar now, and it sounds awesome! It comes with good pickups and I love the body construction. And you can't beat the price. I just wish they would charge an extra 75 bucks and built it properly the first time, because fixing their sh!tty work is a lot harder than just doing it right the first time. Actually, if they sold them as kits, undrilled, that would be great. They could even charge the same, just make sure the neck routing is correct and frets are installed well and leave the rest, it would make an awesome kit.

This was a nice fair review, but the Hohner Prince had was a rebranded HS Anderson Madcat. And actually, the wood the HB is made from is very similar. Most of the Madcats (and I believe Prince's Hohner) were ash with front and rear maple veneer and a solid center strip of walnut. The HB is exactly that minus the rear maple veneer, so with the right pickups, you should be able to play Purple Rain, much like royalty. That said, a madcat re-issue is $3,100.00 and this is $200.00 ish, so I imagine it likely isn't quite as good.
@fritsvanzanten35732 жыл бұрын
I wonder, after reading some stuff about Purple Rain: who played the intro part? In the movie it is Wendy (difficult chords), and gear pages say the album was recorded live (although heavily edited afterward). Anyway, if so, the legendary intro would be played on a Rickenbacker (modified, a.o. with Fender PUs).
@TFShaw2 жыл бұрын
@@fritsvanzanten3573 I read that it was Wendy and she was only 19 years old. I saw a KZbin video in which the same was stated. Do I know 100% this is true? No, just what I've read and what others have stated.

The Purple Rain, although the album was mostly played and recorded on Hohner, is with intro played on slightly modified Rickenbacker with Boss CE1 chorus pedal, as stated by Wendy who recorded it. It was really a surprise for me, but if you listen to intro a bit carefully, you could recognize that Rickenbackers' sound.

I think you focus way too much on the Prince aspect. I'm looking at it (gonna get one soon) as an unusually good looking Tele style guitar with some cool differences (bridge, pickups). In fact, when guitars like this first caught my eye I didn't make the Prince connection, and I'm a fan. As a blues/soul/funk/r&b/jazz guy I like the thin, glassy tone. This would be an excellent guitar for the types of music I most enjoy playing, at any non-ridiculous price, but for under $200?!? BTW, nobody's gonna fooled by this guitar. The pickguard is tortoise rather than the leopard-y one that the real thing and other clones have. I dunno.. just seems like you're not the right person for this guitar mostly. Actually it does sound a lot like Prince's H.S Anderson Mad Cat.

that lawnmower seems to have a mind of its own :) Beware Skynet scenario :) PS great guitar, kinda gross pickguard. a sort of cheetah pattern would have worked much nicer and impaired more of a Prince-y overall funky sexy feel to the axe...PPS did you just say "it seems the shafts are ...rather long!"?! nice touch, keeping it classy! :)))
