I only saw this video about a month ago and I must thank for bringing this amp to my attention Colin. Like you, I love the sound and feel of a valve amp so I got onto Thomann's website and bought one. It was £235 and included a water resistant, heavy duty nylon cover with a UK mains adaptor plug. I can only confirm your review of this amp. For the money, it is spectacular and I've had great fun with it. The only real point I can sort of criticise about it is the Reverb, although useable, can be a bit harsh and as you said can get washed out as it gets turned up so I'm going to upgrade it to a 3 Spring Reverb Tank. MOD do a direct replacement tank and the samples I've heard appear to smooth it out. If that's all I can complain about, a £30 upgrade it's still a bargain in my opinion 👍👍👍.

I have three of the early Monoprice models, for wet-dry-wet, with the top controls; which I hope they go back to. This is a very neutral amp. It sounds good on it's own, but you can put preamp/modelling pedeas in front of the amps to get Marshall, AC30, Fender Tweed sound. After 4 years everything is woking OK.

That was a good buy! How do you mainly use it; 15W or 1W? From this video it seems to produce a good driven tone on the 15W setting with the volume setting low (gain up); probably a comfortable volume. Imagine with both gain & volume up its defending around a meter away? I read that the 1W selection only reduces the input level (it's not a power attenuator for the speaker). That would weaken the drive from the guitar (or input pedals); in which case you could bump up the gain/volume on the amp to push the tubes to compensate and maintain a good tone? I practice with an amp output around 80db at one meter, the amp manages that well with a good tone, would hope for similar from this amp?

Incredible timing. I finally had to scratch the valve itch and ordered the Monoprice version off of Amazon and it was delivered yesterday afternoon. This is my first and probably last tube amp, and as some in Britain might say, I'm chuffed! Last night was a marathon (for me) of practice/playing/noodling and I love the sounds I was able to get. It replaces a Boss Katana 50 watt, which I don't think is terrible for a digital amp, it does some things well, but I still lusted after true valve tone and this certainly satisfies that. Another great video from my favorite music gear reviewer.

Excellent job as usual, Colin. I really like mine, though I find that the tone knobs are more interactive than I was used to. Mine also seems a lot more bassy, but with darker guitars I have an EQ pedal that fixes everything. This amp is VERY loud, and I have used it with a full band quite effectively, but it also sounds good at low volumes in the house. It's a winner!

Right, so this is the second video of yours that inspires me to buy new gear! The other one being an Epiphone Casino (went with natural finish, found a very good deal). I was torn between this and a Blues Junior, but I've had my eye on this one for the added features alone. I finally decided for this one and ordered it from the US Amazon website, they don't ship it to where I live (Mexico) so will have to get around importing it. Should be here in a couple of weeks and I just can't wait after watching your video. I read on the comments on another video that these amps are made at the same factory in China that manufactures certain amps for Laney, and in fact that's why the first version of this amp resembled the Cub 12 so much and even had the name printed on the PCB (personally I think the first look was better, I kinda prefer the control panel on the top).
@adamtucker3128
@adamtucker3128 Жыл бұрын
I believe you are correct that this is a re-badged / re-housed Laney Cub 15R from the original run about 12 or 13 years ago. I bought one of those Cubs as it was (at the time) the cheapest tube combo with a 12" driver and I was not disappointed. It sounds good no matter how you set it and makes a very fine studio or small gig combo. I put a V30 in mine a few years ago and it sounds even better now. I would definitely recommend upgrading the driver, even though it already sounds great. A brilliant little amp and an absolute steal at a hair over 200 quid.

Hi Colin Great, entertaining review.....well they all are really. I bought mine a few weeks ago and love it, love it, love it! Can confirm to everyone that they take pedals really well. Even the send and return sounds good with pedals. Got my volume pedal tacked into this and gives me control over the whole sound I.e. pedals in the front end and volume...well you know. The 1 watt button is really useful and as you said, it's a really loud amp. I gig with it and mic it up with my SM57 into the P.A. perfect! I don't take my Twin Reverb much anymore to gigs, only when I think I need that extra volume. The onboard speaker disconnects when you plug into another cab, so people may need to know this. All in all the best bang for buck and a genuine member of the valve/tube amp gang. Fantastic vids, keep em coming, Fridays wouldn't be the same without them. Very cool little amp. One for the wish list. Currently the only amp I have is a modeler- Boss Nextone Artist (first generation). I’ve been more than pleased with it, and I highly recommend it if you ever decide to explore a modeling amp on the show. It gets deep under the hood, but essentially it’s like building the amp you want and then you save it and go! Also, you briefly mentioned tele vs strat here, which I’ve been thinking about since your strat video. If you don’t mind starting World War 3 I think it would be cool to have a discussion about the real differences between them and their uses. Anyway. Always great to hang out on your channel!

G'day Colin. Another great video.The Tokai sounded awesome. Looked like you were enjoying playing the telecaster... I have a slightly modded Laney cub12 r and I have to say that the Harley Benton tube 15 sounds a lot like it stock.... Mostly use the Laney on the 1watt setting. Great crunch tones. Well done mate. Looking forward to seeing what you get up to next week. Cheers Wes

Hi Colin mate, nice review. I've been tempted to pull the trigger on one of these a couple of times to be honest. During their last Black Friday sale I bought a Joyo Bantamp head for 75 euros instead. It has Bluetooth, an effects loop and a valve preamp and sounds greate. As others have said that HB amp is a perfect platform to start a bit of modding.

I enjoyed your excellent review of this neat little Harley Benton valve amp. I really can’t see how they’re able to sell it at such a low price and are able to make money. The amp sounds great and the tone stack gives plenty of flexibility for dialling in your own sound, the one watt switch is also very handy for ultra low volume level practice, the 12 inch Celestion speaker also helps the amp achieve a great tone. I’ve had a quick look at the schematic diagram and did notice that there are a couple of op amps in the reverb circuit so you don’t get a pure valve signal path if that sort of thing worries you,but then I guess that if you don’t use the reverb they don’t count and anyway if you stick any pedals in front of the amp your pure valve signal has been compromised. I wonder if anyone will make a device that would plug into the speaker socket that would allow the use of headphones for virtually silent practice.
@theguitaristas
@theguitaristas 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Henry, a load device so you could use headphones with most tube amp would be excellent.... Blackstar manage it on their smaller range so it's clearly possible.

They make a head now, you can stick it on top of your amp as backup, I plan on doing that for something a little different then my regular amp. Eventually I want to put creamback in my cab and then I can use the old speaker as a second cab for the "little" amp.

First, I want to say that I’m really enjoying your reviews. Second, I had same amp 2.5 years ago, bought it for band practice. Then starde all the sh**t with covid and I must sell it. Orded a new one yesterday again (I have a short video on my channel with it and Harley Benton Te-52) Third, totalt agree with you about Epiphone SG. It is my favourite budget friendly guitar ever (I reviewed it one year ago, when I bought it for 200€ used). And the last thing, keep doing good job. 🙂👍🏼🎸

I too only have tube amps. One is a Marshall 2203, which I don’t use often, it’s quite powerful I use a Marshall Origin 20 and a Bugera 20. I prefer the sound of EL34’s. Sound is a little more bass sounding as opposed to the 84’s Good video Colin, thanks!

Many thanks, Colin. By the way, I just came across something you might be interested in... I decided to buy Guitar Center's exclusive Epiphone Les Paul Standard 60s Limited Edition--Transparent Blue (also offered by their subordinate company Musician's Friend's) and made the purchase online. I received it yesterday and was stunned to find look-alike Wilkinson tuners (they look just like the Grover 102C model). It also had ultra narrow frets. Epiphone's website states the Epiphone Les Paul Standard 60s comes with medium-jumbo frets and Grover Rotomatic tuners. Guitar Center's website states their limited edition version comes with "vintage tuners" and "vintage frets". I took it to my local GC and they couldn't believe it either. I pulled an Epi LP Standard 60s off their wall and it had Wilkinson tuners on it too. They gladly returned my funds and were still trying to figure out what was going on when I left. So, in your travels keep an eye out for that one. Hope all is well. Cheers.

Love your channel. You may want to check out the Boston Duane Jr.A handwired Fender Champ clone. It has a tone control and different rectifier valve but can be had for about £ 266 ish from Bax music. I've installed an L-pad attenuator i made in the back of mine so I can crank it in the house. I think it sounds great. Anyway keep up the great content. Always entertaining.

Had one of these for 9 months now and all I can say is amazing plus... there are none on the secondhand market which - to me - speaks volumes. Loads of Katanas and Line 6s or course, but the Tube15 seems to be the amp people buy and - at such a low price - decide to keep around regardless. Had a Marshall Origin 5C which was a nice one trick pony - Marshall sounds on a budget - but when you've gigged for 20+ years with a real 70s Bluesbreaker... its not the same with an 8" speaker. Much lighter than a Bluesbreaker though lol - however, the Tube15 is more versatlie and love the reverb even if I did swap out the 2 spring tank for a 3 spring our of personal preference which is easy as hell to do.

Hello Colin, thanks for another super look at a bit of kit. I have an Harley Benton cab and head. The head is the older GA5 with 2 x 10 inch matching Cab with celestions in it. It's only 5 watts as the name suggests but it sounds great. It's a Fender Champ for all intensive purposes, it's plain to see. It was what i paid for it. It's like a magnolia Tolex in exellent condition and i won it on Ebay 50 quid, i was the only bidder. I felt for the guy when i went to pick it up, it was virtualy new. I chucked him another 30 quid, it didn't feel right. Anyway i use mine and although it's only 5 watts it's enough to make the neighbours moan if i use it without the Attenuator. I don't think i'll have another but i'll always stop by to give you some support. Thanks Col 🙏 Long live the Arse Looper 🤘
