I would just add..that was pretty useful. But author's lack of guitar skills make it pretty hard to watch through. Frankly a bit painful after a while. So, well I also suck at guitar, and occasionally post guitar videos of me sucking at it, but I don't hang my wall with 30 guitars and post reviews when I suck. Still, that's ok, review was useful. And review of amp was good, although could have been 15 minutes shorter. Nonetheless exhaustive! Anyway my two cents there. Maybe try and play something musical. Or not play the same riffs over and over again.

I think what I like most about this amp is that it shows the price of having a recognized name on the front. Tube amps are simple enough to be built in your home, but the industry has kept this idea that they're some mythical pieces of tech that should cost in the thousands. While some do earn the price in terms of the research and internal specs, this one shows you what can be done with the average player in mind. It stripped out a lot of features that aren't totally necessary to give you a single channel all tube combo, and even threw in a spring tank. Had mine nearing a year now, and it's been solid. You can set the gain and volume around 9 o'clock and the wattage on 1W, and you've got a clean amp that easily takes pedals at apartment volume. Go somewhere a bit louder, and you can pop the switch to 15W and decently play along with others. I recall they make a 30W one as well, and I just may be looking at that for full band settings. I've been thoroughly impressed with what you get for the price.

A brief (okay, long for a KZbin reply! 😄) History behind this amp. I have the first gen version, I got in March 2016. That was less than a year after they finally released them. They had advertised them for over a year before the released them. It started as an exact copy of the Laney CUB12R, except for the color & texture of the tolex and a different speaker cutout. It had a TV Front style while the Laney had the slant top speaker opening. Both the Laney and both versions of the StageRight15 are made by Sino-Amp Inc. in China. Both versions of the SR15 have the same circuit, except the fist gen/TV Front had two input jacks, with a relay to kick the power down to 1 watt, the second gen/front controls has the push button. The 1st gen had the Acctron blue plastic mini reverb tank. ( I, a.k.a., MadJack, did the first known reverb tank swap, as seen in TDPRI's amp owners club. I did the matching of tank specs and first tried my AC15's old Belton tank, big improvement of the Blue toy tank. I then got another MOD tank, which was an improvement too, though not as great of an improvement. The MOD tank has stayed in it.) The 2nd gen came with the blue toy at first, but soon changed to a non-descript metal tank, which was a big improvement. The 2nd gens went to the front controls, as the other Sino-Amp models have a similar design. It wouldn't surprise me if Laney had a little say in this design change too. Both gens came with Shuguang/Ruby labeled tubes, but a few months ago, they started loading them with JJ Tubes, which have been a favorite tube replacement for most. The Shuguang tubes were fizzy, a little bright and weren't overly reliable. Circuit wise, the preamp in the SR15 is similar to the JCM800. Hence, why you get a nice clean to crunch to distorted tones. The Tone control is in between the two halves of the first preamp tube. There is another driver tube (both halves) before the Gain and TMB controls. these come right before the FX Loop/Reverb break-a-way board. (This board is different from the board used on the Laney, which uses a digital reverb.) Finally you get to the EL-84 output/power tubes, output transformer and finally the speaker. Internally there is a bias adjustment pot and a hum balance pot, for the amp techs to make adjustments as needed. Between the preamp circuit with the EL-84 power tubes and the Seventy-80 speaker, you get a Vox-ish output tone, while having a Marshall-esq drive. Like a combination of British tones in one amp. Yes, many don't like the Seventy-80 speaker (YMMV). Usually they've been replaced with Celestion (or copies) speakers. I've tried Vintage 30 style speakers (WGS Veteran30 & Retro 30), which were good for higher gain/modern styles and/or brighter tones, G12H-30 Anniversary style speaker (WGS Reaper) for fatter tones and what I run for my style/taste, a Celestion G12M Greenback (From my AC15C1) for classic rock styles. Some others have done tone stack emulations and, with the right speaker, you can go from a sound very similar to the Blue Junior, to a full on British tone of your liking.

@@sleepymarauder4178 That would depend on whether you want the lesser expensive SR15, with the Seventy-80, real spring reverb, blonde tolex and front controls, or do you want to spend extra for the H&H speaker, digital reverb, black tolex, top mounted controls and then brand name. Another thing to consider, your geographic location. If you are in Europe, then you should get the Harley Benton version from Thomann, as it's the same amp as the SR15, but with the power transformer for European voltages. They even have the same valve silk screened on the front of the amp.

I detect some snobbery here. I have one of these things. So far it's been great. Now, it probably wouldn't be as serviceable as a Vox AC15 Custom, but it's 20 pounds lighter, has an effects loop and an attenuator, and is $500 cheaper. It would sound as good with a Gibson R9 as it does with a Harley Benton (which are great guitars, btw). With the quality of this "cheap gear" rising continually, the snobbery is getting more and more laughable.

No joke: this is the best overall tube combo I have ever owned. I had and got rid of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Engnator Tweaker 15, Vox AC15, Traynor YCV20 because none of them really satisfied what I was looking for. I then went to modeling for a while. When this came out I thought "why not get a cheap little tube combo just for fun?" But once I started to play it, I realized to my shock, that it was what I was looking for for more than a decade. It kind of occupies this middle ground between brownface Fender, Vox, and early Marshall-- which is perfect for the 60's sound I like. With some well-chosen preamp pedals, you can push it further in either of those three directions. I put in Tung Sol preamp tubes and some NOS Sylvania power tubes. Kept the speaker and reverb pan. I run the loop output into my Tech 21 Deuce Deluxe Power Engine (which I had originally purchased to go with my modeler) for all the volume I will ever need. For drive and dirt have a JHS Series 3 distortion (refined RAT clone that can do overdrive, distortion, and even fuzz) and a Vick Audio Mt. Pleasant (Bluesbreaker-type). These run into an EHX Mod 11 (modulation), a TC Electronics Flashback 2 for delay and finally a Digitech Polara for spring reverb.. This is the setup I've been going for for more than a decade. And dang it if this little combo is not the heart of it.

Lifting the speaker somewhat higher from ground level, esp. when your ears much higher, can certainly improve the sound. A slight angle upwards (of the imaginary axis protruding from the speaker's center outwards) vs. 90° to the floor can also help, although lifting it from being almost directly on the floor is always a good start. I guess TV legs are also better than some big box or so that couples too much sound into the floor (the amp comes with 4 stubble feet for a reason - for more point kinda contact to the floor, small surface. It's not just against dirt or scratches).

These little amps are amazing. Here's a tip to make it sound even better: these amps almost always come biased quite cold. The amp has a bias trim pot inside, and following the Laney Cub 12r (same amp) schematic setting recommendations, I adjusted the bias trim pot to -12.5v....and was completely blown away by how much better it sounded. Also, if you don't care for the reverb (I like it, but not everyone does), it's just a common reverb tank setup and you can easily change it out for a new one for as little as about $25.

That's good to know about that pot, I'll have to try it. Okay. So I get what you are saying, but I personally think that it's good for people to consider those sort of things when choosing gear. For example: when I first started playing, I was super stoked to have a ZOOM pedal... Now? I can barely stand the sound of most digital effects, even though the technology has advanced considerably. And then, there is the question of what kind of tech a guy who just likes to play guitar can repair/mod him/herself. The power consumption of tubes vs solid state. The fact that , while tube has a nice tone on clean channels, it never really "cleans up" as much as solid state... I guess what I'm saying is that, I believe even novice/beginners should make informed purchases. Maybe they shouldn't obsess all that much, but all of these things could be a factor in how they experience the joys of playing, from beginner to expert. My brother (actually an experienced guitarist, but mostly acoustic, although he has played electric in bands) wanted to get a modeling amp, but I talked him out of it... he's happy I did! He actually likes the simplicity of not having 50 different presets, but he likes the subtle variations you can get by switching out tubes, or messing with gain staging, and it actually found that sort of stuff so immersive that he is building his own guitar. Also, let's face it: digital gear has no potential for becoming an heirloom. So, if you ever want sentimentality as part of your creative headspace, it just won't be there, even if the modeling is accurate. Unfortunately, he sprung for a Bugera with digital reverb, rather than going for something like the monoprice, which is the same design, but has real spring reverb. I have some problems with digital. Some of which are subjective, but my biggest pragmatic concern with digital (at least in terms of amps... pedals I don't mind so much) is that when digital craps out, it doesn't get "quirky". It becomes atrocious, and can sometimes make enture functions, and even units unusable, and you can't just "replace the part", you are just kind of fucked, and you get set back creatively, and you may have to junk an entire unit just because sone chip got glitchy, and there is no way to even diagnose it, let alone fix it.

I got my first one at Christmas 2017, right after this version was released. I bought my second one a couple of years later. The first one, the power tubes went in Summer 2018, so I swapped in some Tung-Sols, popped a 12AT7 into V1, did a bias, and it's such a clean amp. I love the way it sounds. The second one also has a 12AT7 in V1, but the other tubes are stock. I use them as a pedal platform in stereo, and it's a great setup, though I have no problem taking just the first one out for jam sessions. These are far louder than you would expect from a 15 watt amp. All in all, they're an absolute steal. I use mine with a Gibson Sonex, a Harley Benton CST-24T, an Ibanez, and a really cool old mid-60's Harmony Bobkat, and they all have their own unique character through it.

Glad to see you review this amp. I bought the 5W model about eight months ago, it's supposedly based on the old tweed Champ circuitry. Regardless of comparisons, it's just so hard to find tube amps anywhere close to this price point these days. I've owned a lot of great amps over the years. My little 5W Stage Right is a keeper, takes my board well and is solid for home practice. I'm seriously considering picking up the 15W as well.

In Australia, these are badged as 'RMS' - mine either has a Squier Super-Sonic (humbuckers) thru a Boss GT-1 going thru it, or else my Jazzmaster plugged straight in, nothing but a cable. I love the way it handles the P-90 style JM single coils, I was quite surprised. These days, in pubs & clubs, I'm noticing a lot of 2 amp rigs, not so much for stereo panning, usually its something big for clean volume + something small & driven harder. I currently own a couple Princeton re-issues, Deluxe reverbs, VHT and Blackstar Studio 10 (6V6), a couple home built Mojo tones... All costing at least twice as much as this "Celestion equipped" Ivory gem. Not saying it sounds "better" than those, but IMO this amp sounds and takes pedals way better than it should. And it does break-in and sound even more full in time. How long will it last? I don't know, but it's already payed for itself far as I'm concerned. Great amp.

I love it too for my own noodling/writing. I think most of the good sounds reside with the bass below noon and the treble and mids at various places above noon (I really like it with the mids pushed hard - but that's a taste thing), but there are certainly a lot of other sounds to be dialed in. We have used it with me playing WITH STICKS on both 1 and 15 watt mode (depending on which guitarist was using at and how crunchy they wanted).

I had ordered from Amazon for $9.99 (while waiting for the amp) and received a set of Kaish vintage "aged white" chicken head knobs to replace the amazing CHEAP-ASS plastic knobs that came on the amp. HUGE improvement in quality, and they look great!! The amp came with 1 JJ 12AX7 preamp tube and 2 other unknown preamp tube as well as two "no-name" EL84 power tubes. I ordered 2 more JJ 12AX7's and twoJJ EL84's to replace them. The speaker it came with is a 50 watt / 16 ohm Celestion "Type A." I just bought this amp $212 on Amazon delivered to my house. I have not put it completely through the paces, but I was blown away by this amp. I was expecting it to be a cheap clone of a Fender Blues Junior. Something to use as a rehearsal/practice amp. It is not. I have been playing British amps ala Hiwatt, Marshall and Trace Elliot Custom Tube Works for decades and use a Fender Tweed Bassman for recording. So first, I noticed the Hiwatt Style knobs. Nice. It has the same front panel layout as a Hiwatt with added reverb. Without any pedals, I set it up like I set up a Hiwatt 50 or 100 and it was not similar. I set it like a Fender Tweed and is was a bit closer. I set it up like a Marshall Plexi with a master volume mod and it was closer. Then as I was showing it to my son. I was tweaking it closer to what I use with my Trace Elliot Speed Twin Channel 2 settings and it was so close. I adjusted the tone stack bass and mid like I do with the Bassman and it was dead on to my Speed Twins. I have been using the Trace Elliot Speed Twins as my main live performance amps for a decade or so. They do the Hiwatt, Marshall Plexi, Fender Tweed Bassman thing based on the channel and gain structure. This thing duplicated the tones I get with my Trace Elliot Speed Twins on channel 2 and Fender Tweed 4x10 Bassman. Again, I am not using pedals. So my son asked about the 1 watt button. I engaged it. We realized it was much more that 1 watt. I noticed it sounded much more like throwing EL84's do in Triode mode. I often use a Hiwatt 50 with Yellow Jackets/EL84's for Triode Mode. I also often throw the Trace Elliot Speed Twins into Triode mode as well on the EL34's. I suspect the 1 watt button is actually changing the EL84's from Pentode to Triode mode, and not attenuating the output. I am not an electronical engineer or amp tech...this is just what it sounds like to me. The best I can describe the amp is like a Trace Elliot Speed Twin on Channel 2, regular gain in Triode Mode, with the bass and mid tone stacks set more like I would on a Fender Tweed Bassman(7 o'clock and 10 o'clock respectively). With regards to the speaker -- this Chinese Celestion 80 sounds much like the British Celestion GT-75's in the Speed Twins. I have seen KZbin influencers recommending changing the Celestion 80's to Greenbacks or Creambacks. I am relatively happy with the sound of the installed 80 and have hopes that with break-in, it will sound better. If not, I have a vintage Fane from a 70's Hiwatt I will try. I will start recording with this to see how well it delivers.

Your comment makes this thing sound crazy good. I can’t help but almost doubt it the way you describe the amp because it’s so cheap and that’s crazy good praise but the video does seem to validate your claims. It just almost sounds like a dream for something like that at that price. I play Marshall and have a vox and have owned hiwatt in the past. My Marshall has the most shapeable tone but the vox is incredible and it’s all I would use except for how heavy it is. The thing weighs 95 lbs and I gigged it all over the place until I got the Marshall because I wanted something lighter. It weighs 50 and now I’m looking at this thing because of its weight and the ease of gigging with it. It sounds so good in this video that I think I’ll buy one. My wife would kill me if I spend a ton lol. I have 4 children to support. I was looking at the posigrid spark but my old school nature made me check this out and I’m in love with the sound. It sounds closer to the vox but not quite as chimey. For the price I will get one and see in person

Great review. Guitar playing is great, you are reviewing the amp and you did a great job. I just bought my second one of these. Amazing amps. Really put the Blues Juniors to shame. Started gigging with these a while back. A Les Paul through this amp is beyond belief. Mic it through your PA at gigs. The Overdrive on these is incredible.

That's the kind of amp I love to see showing up on a gig as an engineer live. The trick with small amps like that is throw it on an amp stand that tilts it back like a floor monitor and stick it next to the floor monitor blowing towards your face and the rest of the band, that way you don't blow a room away and you have it going right to your ears instead of it blowing at the back of your knees and blowing right at the audience. That brings the overall to volume down so that even on a small room you can mic it up and throw it through the monitors for the rest of the band and will make it so a tech can actually mix it even in a smaller room. You will be happier the audience will love it and the sound guy or sound girl won't want to strangle you because your amp is just too loud to do any with.

thanks for the demo/test!!! of course it makes good sense to test afford-a-board pedals through the front of the amp when what you're testing is the afford-a-board. but here you're explicitly testing the amp so it would have made total sense to use the effects loop.

If you're wanting a good selection at that price range, I would think that you need to include all types of amps. Also, as a Pacifica owner I firmly believe that particular line blows all other builders out of the water, and I would have to be given a lot of proof to believe anything different.

I have an American made, Corona custom shop Stratocaster, but actually end up playing a "Tribute" (which means made in Indonesia) Strat copy most of the time. It is a G&L Strat Tribute guitar that I got on Craigslist for $200. I just love the tone. (Update) I'm learning a set for my daughters wedding and have switched back to the Fender Strat, on which I have installed low output lipstick pickups with alnico 2's (see Tim Pierce). The main reason I'm using my actual Strat is it is setup better, (and I setup both guitars). I have a tendency to push the low E string out of tune on open chords, its a problem. The Fender Strat is just easier to control than the other guitars in this regard. My low E problem is probably due to having played acoustics predominately.

I own both the 5W 1x8” and this one, the 15W 1x12”. I got the 5W over 2 years ago off CL south of Nashvegas and the owner had swapped the Celestion for a Jensen to get the Champ sound and upgraded the tubes to EH and well, it nailed that Champ sound. He included the Celestion speaker too, all for $60. Best purchase ever. Finally found its 15W big brother and am so stoked I did because of the 3 band EQ and the spring verb and that “tone” knob which really is a presence circuit l. Got it in as-new condition with upgraded tubes (3 EH 12ax7s and 2 Genalex EL84s) for $170 and it’s just so versatile, and as others have said, it takes pedals well. I can easily play with a band with this 15 (not playing death metal or anything). I may eventually go Greenback but the stock Celestion 70/80 is more than respectable. Never thought I could get such great tube sound-in both amps-for anywhere near the price. I’ve had plenty of other Fender tube, hybrid and SS amps and these are transparent amps with great cleans and such sweet breakup.

I had this amp... friend of mine asked if I had it dimed, I was on 3. I found mine to not take pedals all that well, but that could have been a me problem. I'm no expert in setting up a rig or anything. Also: I think you should do all amps as it seems like it'd be hard to do a whole series on tube amps in this range
@TonyBarger
@TonyBarger 2 жыл бұрын
Try running pedals into it with the gain set low and only the volume up. Also, keep the reverb off. Another tip, try to keep things like reverb, delay, chorus, etc running through the FX loop. And put things like compression, boost, gain, fuzz and distortion pedals straight into the amp. That's not a concrete rule by any means, but it can be helpful when you're dealing with a fussy amp.

Hello, Ryan. Thanks for the review. I have seen other reviews on this amp and they are all positive. I have been trying to get my hand on one but unfortunately Amazon nor Monoprice will ship it to Puerto Rico. I visit family in the mainland at least once a year but being a teacher I don't much money to spend on an amp. $250 with free delivery (Amazon Prime) This amp has been around long enough to have proven its reliability & construction. I haven’t found any significant consistent complaints about this amp. Apparently, it’s a reasonably good amp. Remember we are comparing this to the other MRSP $250 tube amps with effects loop out there. Compared to to my ‘’72 Super Reverb with 4 JBL’s i concluded that the Super Reverb was a little sweeter and fuller than the Mono price. That wasn’t a fair comparison because the Super Reverb uses 10” speakers. So, in order to be fair comparing apples to apples I compared it to my ‘65 Twin that has 12” speakers. Surprisingly, I thought the Twin was a little nicer overall. Good amp worth the price. Do 2 things: 1) Spend a few grand on vintage amps. 2) Practice more instead of complaining your amp doesn’t sound good. I ain’t the amp that doesn’t sound good.

@@jackroads2439 Hey man I feel your pain on that one. I’ve been buying, trading and collecting guitars and amps for 40 years. I’m not an expert but I learned long ago to expect tube amps to be unpredictable. If swapping a tube or spraying a scratchy doesn’t fix it I bite the bullet and send to my local amp tech. Most issues I encounter are simple fixes requiring minimal bench time thus lower $ for repair. In your case I would almost bet a soldier joint needs to be reseated. If you decide to take it to a reputable amp tech ask to recheck all of the soldier joints repairing them when needed. A good tech should be able to get your amp repaired quickly and without a lot of money. You could also Try plugging into the “return” input on the back

Thanks for doing this. I have been looking at this for a while and I think it may be in the running for a practice amp. At 25 lbs I can lug it from place to place easily and at $250 not worry if something happens. The only weak item is the reverb in my opinion and in looking at comments in other worlds it seems to be the opinion of others as well. Nothing a pedal can't fixed. It is what it is and I am rightly impressed by it.
