Hey Mike good video tonight... While I was out on the road this evening about 8 or so miles from home. It started to spit a little rain. Lightning and thundering. Then the rain got a little heavier. More sky lightning. And then it started pouring so hard I had to stop. Thankfully i wasn't that far away from a gas station with a canopy over the pumps to seal some refuge . Well by the time i got home the only thing dry was a little spot on the top of my head under my helmet. Man it poured hard.. oh well that's how it goes..See you out on the road..lol.

Nice video Mike. I have a rebuilt 1979 80” Shovel and am running a VOES switch with a Ultima ignition. The Ultima is a Dyna module repackaged as a Ultima and cheaper. The bike is kick only with a Super E and 99% of the time starts on the first kick.Tatro Machine in San Diego rebuilt the motor and has software to program the module for kick only applications.He did his magic and as stated earlier, the bike starts 99% of the time on the first kick.The Shovel runs like a violated ape.Keep up the great work !

Interesting show. I'm running points and condenser on a 78 shovel. Nothing even close to your ignition but it works for me. I carry a extra condenser and points in the saddle bag. You probably already know this, but in the event someone doesn't. The points for a 1960's General Motors 6 cylinder 235 cubic inch engine work well in a Harley. You do have to do a little modification using a file on the points bracket. If you purchase new points and compare to the points you took out you will see what I mean. Thank you for another great video. Keep the rubber side down and have a great 4th.

The problem is, being able to retard far enough to start easily, then being able to advance far enough to run well. There needs to be broad enough adjustment. An electric starter is much more forgiving. If a unit is programmable enough to give you enough timing choices, it's fine for kick starting.

Putting in a Dyna S on my 72' XLCH and I'm at the "static timing" portion. Instructions does call for the front cylinder to be on its compression stroke. I put my "line" at the center of the inspection hole. Not the "dots". When watching your video you mentioned that the line was the rear cylinder. I was about to change it, but checked my old HD service manual titled: "Sportsters 1970 to 1978", first. There's a figure 5-19 showing the line in the middle. The description reads: Advance timing mark on flywheel for front cylinder piston 1971 and later. 40 degree BTC. Can you help me understand? I've owned this bike since 1984 and it was always a 2 kick start ......until I had the motor rebuilt. Now it's not reliable. With a kick start, that's not too good for this 62 year old vet. Hoping that going electronic is the way back to her former glory.
@pacificmike9501 Жыл бұрын
The line is where the front cylinder should fire at full advance. Position it in the window. Remember to be sure your front cylinder is on its compression stroke. That's with the front piston coming up and both front valves closed.

It took me forever to try electronic ignition, then it took the people who make them forever to make them last. Then, they really got good. I never liked the cone motor advance system, although I've really studied how to manipulate it for my purposes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I understand the attachment.

'Pity the single spark plug, in darkness, sat there fizzing, & faced with a curving landscape, to send it's flame front whizzing, far across the other side, to then push the piston down, trouble is, that while en-route, it barbeques the crown, for hydrocarbons careth not, who they scorch & damage, they'll dump their heat just getting there, it really is quite savage. (ouch, sorry) So fit a second sparky thing, to centralize the score, then instead of burning sideways, & pushing on the bore, everything lines up nice & straight, no bias to one side, for The Lady loves a linear push, it helps her pistons glide.' (I feel this is probably the point where, . . . I should just 'go & put the kettle on'. Happy trundling : )

Hey Mike thanks so much for another great video... I always enjoy tuning in.. So listen I've got a question for you & I apologize if this topic has possibly bin covered in an earlier video. I'm guessing that I've watched about 75% of your content & scanned thru but I may have I may missed it.. It's about your heads & exhaust on this beauty Shovelhead.. You get a good look at about 5:34 in the video. I really like the way your set up with the four bolts instead of a single one.. Is this something you machined up yourself of is available for purchase to public kind of thing? Maybe Exhaust options with there pro's & con's of design etc could be a topic suggestion for a video in the future... Anyway if you have a minute to reply would be much appreciated.. Take care of yourself Mike.. Cheers from Dave in Canada..
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Dave, those are STD heads. They are very high performance and a real pleasure. To my knowledge they are not available at this time. They were produced with three bolt exhaust ports. I love that feature. Of course, you have to fab your own pipes. I think Paughco produced some drag pipes for them. They also came with dual spark plugs. Neat stuff. Cheers to you.

Good stuff Mike. If you don't mind, where did you pick up your extensive knowledge on all things Harley?
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Nobody knows "all things Harley." It goes on forever. And there are people who have forgotten more than I will ever know. But I did grow up in a gas station in San Bernardino, California. You go to sleep to that sound growing up there. Just a love and a hunger for it. Harry Fryed and Willie Nelson did a song called "That Roar of Dirty Thunder." It pretty much explains it.

Very interesting video Mike. Even though English is not my mother language easy to understand. Is there any information which advance curve (Ultima 53-644) is best for a 1988-883 Sportster? Would love to see a video about choosing advance curves. Sincere thanks.
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
It's really something you need to experiment with for yourself on your machine. The Dynatek ignition I use on my Shovelhead is configured to that motor with me riding it. That's the purpose of the adjustments. Normally, when there are curves available to you, you start with the most aggressive and then go to the next milder if the first one detonates.

@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
These heads I have now are STD heads and came already machined for dual plugs. The set I had before, we had a drilling fixture and did them on a drill press. I've had several sets done for other people over the years. Dave Mackie Engineering does them. Probably a lot of people do them

Well done, figured dual plugs were more spark / more power. But never knew why. If l ever get the fire to stop coming out my carb on 77 FLH. Might try that ignition.LOL! My points plate says made in USA. I get a kick outta that. Think I'll stick to that.
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
So much stuff is world sourced now. The points work fine. That bike was my test bench for so long, I've tried more things on it than you can imagine. Setting the points cam dead center will make your points open evenly on both lobes of the cam. That will give you the great "potato."

I have a question that's been stumping mechanics around here. I inherited a 92 dyna from my brother. When I got it front cylinder not firing. Replaced ignition timing module by the cam and the coil and plugs. After that now the front one fires but the rear one not firing now. I'm lost lol. Love your videos you are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you
@pacificmike95012 жыл бұрын
Sounds kinda simple, but, have you checked out the plug wires themselves? Have you tried a different ignition main module? You know, if when it was apart, could you have switched the plug wires? There's something very simple going on here. Those plug wires could be almost thirty years old, you know. When the module goes bad, not just the pickup module, but the main ignition module, they do all sorts of strange things.
@patgrandy63752 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 thank you for the quick response. I've been trying to look up how to check the main module. I can't find anything. Bikes are kinda new to me. So I'm learning on the fly here. Lol. Thank you.

It's difficult to properly check out. Before there were so many different ones, I used to keep one on the shelf for testing purposes. I could simply change it. Trial and error gets expensive. I get it.

Hi Mike, I looked for you at Long Beach, but could not find you. These masks make it hard to see who is behind them. I am rebuilding my 1966 Shovelhead right now. I am having the machine shop convert my heads to Dual Plugs. When I talked to Larry at Dynatek . He told me that I should retard my timing when I get it back together. He would not give me a recommendation on how much. I know you run a switch so you can toggle back & forth depending on where you are riding, Elevation & so on. I run a Voes on mine & a maximum of stock 35 Degrees single plug heads. I was thinking that I will need to back it off 3 to 5 degrees, dual plug heads. Also I run Torco Accelerator Octane booster in every Tank. It REALLY REALLY makes a difference! (4 oz each tank, 5 Gal) So my Octane rating is over 95 with Shell Premium. You have all the experience how much do you back off the Timing? Thanks, you are the best. I have learned sooo much from you. I like your "Common Sense Approach".
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
I try to be consistent on things. My best result was 28 degrees. But, you're making some other changes. I don't know how much compression you're running, or how much overlap on your cam. You sound pretty resourceful and I'll be hoping to hear how you do with it.

@@pacificmike9501 Hi Mike, Thanks for the input. I am a Sales Rep for several companies (Cometic, JE Pistons, Wiseco etc.) . So yesterday I was in seeing John O'Keefe. Use a good modern oil. The service manual will recommend (depending on your weather) 50 wt. Harley oil. Nowdays, I run 20/50, but don't recommend brands. Transmission? A name brand motorcycle gear lube (generally, 85/140). Invest in a genuine Harley service manual. Oh yah! Congratulations!

@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
You do it according to the manufacturer. Time the points according to the advance mark with the ignition at full advance. This system is set at TDC and the "brain" in there automatically advances to where it is programmed. You're not wrong.

I just picked up a 72 Shovelhead, Its got a super E carb and looks to be completely stock other than that. Id love to make it into a true roadworthy bike, not afraid of long road trips. Do you have any advice on upgrades or maintenance that I should begin on to Improve reliability/rideability?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
How is it geared? Is it turning too high an RPM level at freeway speeds? Does it get hot? What you need to do is ride it. Start with small trips first. You'll soon know what you need. It's all about you.
