Jon shows step-by-step how to change the oil and oil filter on a 2018 Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 1200.
Servicing your own bike can not only save you money, but it can boost your ego as well. In this instance we are talking about changing the oil and oil filter on a 2018 Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 1200 model. This procedure can be done by a novice with the minimal amount of tools. The job only requires four tools: a socket wrench, an extension for said socket wrench, an oil filter wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver. (Of course, you need an oil catch. If that isn’t common knowledge to you, then maybe a dealer is the right call for you, no judgment!)
Always reference your owner's manual when performing services; if you don't have yours, download one directly from Harley-Davidson here.

I always make a tray type funnel with aluminum foil to place under the oil filter before removing. Saves a lot of clean up.

Yeah. I can't believe he just intentionally poured oil all over the bike. I have learned another trick to make it less messy. I also use foil, but like the day before I change the oil, I put a homemade funnel under the outer end of the filter, with the bike on the stand, take a hammer and sharp punch, and poke a hole in the bottom of the top of the filter. Let it drain overnight. About 90% of the oil will have drained out by the next morning. The foil will catch what little is left. LEAVE THE FOIL IN PLACE after removing the filter. Pour some oil into the new filter, let it soak for an hour or so, then turn the new filter to the horizontal position over a drain pan, so that if you put too much oil in the filter, it will pour out into the drain pan rather than all over the bike. The goal should be to not get a drop of oil on the bike. It may happen from time to time, but you should still do your best to avoid it. The filter location is just a bad design by H-D. I get that it needs to be there, but it seems they could have done something to make changing it less messy. Nobody seems to know what a drain pan is anymore. What this guy is using is NOT a drain pan. You can get a proper drain pan at Walmart for like $2. I'm still using an old metal drain pan from the '50s that belonged to my dad. It worked back then, it still works now. This is a YABOB (Yet Another Blacked Out Bike) so it is difficult to find something black if you don't know what it looks like. Maybe they should have made the hose, or at least the plug bright yellow. My '06 model does not have a separate plug, the hose goes over a metal plug welded onto the frame. Works the same. My bike is NOT all black, and it is easy to find. YOU DO INDEED USE THE OIL FILTER WRENCH FOR INSTALLATION. Hand tight is not enough. It WILL come loose, and probably destroy your engine. First hand tighten it, then use the filter wrench and socket to snug it up. Make sure that you CANNOT remove it with your hands. If you can, IT IS TOO LOOSE. He missed a step that I always do. It's not an absolute necessity (like properly tightening the oil filter) but a good idea. I put the plug back, but DO NOT tighten the clamp. I pour about a qt. of oil into the tank, then pull the plug back out, let a few ounces drain out to make sure there is no oil in the hose, then stick the plug back in it and tighten the clamp. It's pretty easy to see that that clamp is too big for the hose. That can result in uneven pressure on the plug, and cause leaks. I put in TWO AND A HALF QUARTS, NOT TWO. I still come out needing to add a little bit more. Total capacity with an oil and filter change is 3.6 quarts. The oil level should be about 1/16" below the max level on the dipstick. Don't overfill it, but get as much as you can in without overfilling it.

I bought a oil filtet tool, a primary funnell, a funnel for the oil filter to funell oil away from the inside of the frame and a funnell for the motor oil on amazon for like $24....literally the best investment and 0 mess involved. Also, drain the oil first then take the filter off, that was just counter productive my guy!

@@maxf3093 This is what I picked up off Amazon, it has a funnel for putting new oil in, a funnel for putting the primary/transmission fluid in, a metal socket style wrench attachment to take off the oil filter, and the funnel that goes under the filter when you remove it to drain the oil out of the frame area and it works amazing! The kit is 110% worth the $32 or whatever it is. It makes no mess and makes oil changes a 5 minute job. I hope this helps! www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07YKNJRBC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The Owners Manual says, 1st removes drain plug and drain all engine oil. 2nd is remove oil filter and replace as per instruction. 3rd says refill with Genuine Harley Oil. I believe you made an error by loosening the oil filter before draining the oil thus making a bit of mess under the oil filter chamber. Please advise.
@whatsstefon
@whatsstefon 5 жыл бұрын
It'll still make a mess. The steps don't matter which way you do them. My bigger concern is what the crankcase wasn't drained. Usually there is residual oil in there too. That's where the oil usually drains to overnight or extended periods of the engine not running. That's why the oil level reads low when the engine is cold. Also, after filling the oil tank, you should prime the oil in that drain line. It could have a big air bubble stuck in it. Maybe it won't, but it's worth doing while you're there.

The oil tank is up under the seat. Putting a plug on the bottom of it would really be a soak everything ordeal. They also make cheap little plastic slides that fit under the oil filter to guide the oil out from the side. All in all, I'd say this is about as easy as a non-electric motorcycle gets.
